Download or read book Life of Sir Walter Scott Classic Reprint written by Robert Chambers and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-10-27 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life of Sir Walter Scott Sir Walter Scott was born at Edinburgh on the 1sth of August 1771, being the birthday of the great Euro pean hero [napoleon] whose deeds he was afterwards to record. He was the third of a family consisting of Six sons and one daughter. The eldest son, John, attained to a captaincy in an infantry regiment, but was early obliged to retire from service on account of the delicate state of his health. Another elder brother, Daniel, was a sailor, but died in early life. Of him Sir Walter has often been heard to assert, that he was by far the cleverest and most interesting of the whole. Thomas, the next brother to Sir Walter, followed the father's profession, and was for some years factor to the Marquis of Abercorn, but eventually died in Canada in 1822, in the capacity of paymaster to the 7oth Regi ment. Sir Walter himself entertained a fondly high Opinion of the talents of this brother; but it is not borne out by the sense of 'his other friends. He possessed, however, some burlesque humour, and an acquaintance with Scottish manners and character - qualities which were apt to impose a little, and even induced some individuals to believe, for some time, that he, rather than his more gifted brother, was the author of The Novels.' This book was released on 2018-01-31 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Letters of Sir Walter Scott and Charles Kirkpatrick Sharpe to Robert Chambers, 1821-45: With Original Memoranda of Sir Walter Scott 'looking back from the year 1868, I feel that C. K. S. Has himself become, as it were, a tradition of Edinburgh. His thin, effeminate figure, his voice pitched in alt.-his attire, as he took his daily walks on Princes Street: a long blue frock-coat, black trousers (rather wide below, and sweeping over white stockings and neat shoes), something like a web of white cam bric round his neck, and a brown wig coming down to his eyebrows - had long established him as what is called a character. He had recently edited a book containing many stories of diablerie, and another in which the original narrative of ultra-presbyterian Church History had to bear a series of cavalier notes of the most mocking character. He had a quaint, biting wit, which people bore as they would a scratch from a provoked cat. Essentially, he was good-natured and fond of merriment. He had considerable gifts of drawing, and one cari cature portrait by him, of Queen Elizabeth dancing, high and disposedly, before the Scotch ambassadors, is the delight of every body who has seen it. In jest upon his own peculiarity of voice, he formed an address. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2018-02 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Some Recent Statements and Other Matter Concerning Sir Walter Scott The large leather wheel-chair, now at Ashiesteel, is undoubtedly an interesting relic of Sir Walter Scott, as having been a costly present from him to a relation who had been sorely stricken; but it is rather difficult to account for the statement which reappears, from time to time, that it had been used by himself. Anyone who has examined the chair, must see that the large wheel-guards would prevent it ever being brought up to a table for writing or any other purpose; while Lockhart's statement that the chair in which he and Laidlaw wheeled Sir Walter about, during the remarkable revival of a few days which followed his last return to Abbotsford, was a bath-chair borrowed from Huntley Burn (the Fergusons') may certainly be taken as trustworthy. (see Life, vol. 7th, chap. The large leather chair was by this time at Ashiesteel, having been no doubt warehoused in Edinburgh with the Ashiesteel furniture, when the house was empty; and it was undoubtedly sent to Abbotsford, at the time in question, for Sir Walter's use. But even if it had been at all suited for an invalid, it may be a question whether it was at Abbotsford during the time when he was able to be moved about. It is certain that, on the last day he left his room, when he insisted on being wheeled up to his desk, and making an attempt to write, it was not in this chair; for, as said before, it could not have been brought up to the table. This book was released on 2018-09-14 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memoirs of the Life of Sir Walter Scott, Vol. 3 of 4 It may well be supposed that the President of the Boldside Festival and the Abbotsford Hunt, did notomit the good old costum of thejkim. Every November, before quitting the country for Edinburgh, he gave a harvest home, on the most approved model of former days, to all the peasantry on his estate, their friends and kindred, and as many poor neighbours besides as his barn could hold. Here old and young danced from sunset to sunrise, J obn of Skye's bagpipe being relieved at intervals by the violin of some Wandering Willie; - and the laird and all his family were present during the early part of the evening, be and his wife to distribute the contents of the first tub of whisky-lpunch, and his young people to take their due share in the endless reels and hornpipes of the earthen floor. As Mr Merritt has said of him as he appeared at Laird Nippey's kirn of earlier days, to witness the cor diality of his reception might have unbent a misanthrope. He had his private joke for every old wife or gausie carle, his arch compli ment for the ear of every bonny lass, and his hand and his blessing for the head of every little Eppie Daidle from Abbotstown or Broomy lees. Download or read book The Life of Sir Walter Scott Classic Reprint written by G Le Grys Norgate and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-05 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Sir Walter Scott He is proud to count himself a gentleman and to claim descent from such celebrities Of the Border as Auld Watt of Harden and the Flower Of Yarrow. It was their son William who was fain to wed Meikle mouthed Meg. From this lady, whose story Browning has revived for us in a Characteristic poem, Sir Walter perhaps got a prominent feature Of his physiognomy. It is remarkable. That two of these Scotts of Harden were, like their descendant, lame, and, spite the fact, did very well in the world, just as he did. Not to dwell upon ancestry, we need merely at present further mention Scott's Jacobite great-grandfather (another Walter), who not only fought for the Stewart cause, but let his beard grow unshorn out of regret for its failure. Beardie 'must have been an ancestor after the author of Waverley's own heart. He quarrelled with his second son (walter's grandfather) because he would not go to sea, and the young man revenged himself terribly by becoming a Whig. This Robert Scott did well for himself in the cattle trade, having laid the foundations of his fortune by a lucky speculation with a hunter. He rode well to hounds, and was prominent in all field sports, wearing usually a jockey-cap over his grey hair.
