Book excerpt: Before settlers first arrived in the 1800s, Clinton County rested full of promise along the western edge of the Mississippi River. In the years that have passed, it has become an area of great commercial, agricultural, and industrial accomplishments. From the initial settlement of Lyons, DeWitt, and Camanche, where axe and oxen were prevalent on the scene, to the modern communities that are now home to astronauts and artisans, this book illustrates the incredible growth that has occurred over nearly two centuries. Through over 200 historical photographs, the Clinton County Historical Society documents how Clinton County has become a national treasure of culture and character.

Download or read book Warriors in Mr Lincoln S Army written by Quita V. Shier and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2017-12-11 with total page 1078 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The American Civil War ended 152 years ago. Of the military men who served in this drama of untold suffering, little has been written about the experiences of the American Indian (indigenous) participants. Indigenous soldiers and sailors from various states served bravely for both the Union and the Confederacy. One such unit for the north was Company K of the First Michigan Sharpshooters called the all-Indian Company. Company K was unique because it was the only company in the entire sharpshooter regiment, and in all other military units in Michigan, that had only indigenous enlisted men on its roster. In Warriors in Mr. Lincolns Army, author Quita V. Shier offers a comprehensive profile study of each officer and enlisted American Indian soldier in Company K, First Michigan Sharpshooters, who served in the Civil War from 1863 to 1865. The profiles of this all-Indian Company include information taken from military service records, medical files, biographical and family data extracted from pension files, and personal interviews with some of the soldiers descendants. The profiles feature the infantrymen known as grunts, who bore the burden of fighting, and dying in this conflict, and the officers who led them into battle. Shier shares insight into who these fighting men were, who loved them, and what happened to them.

Download or read book Lost Towns of Mason County Michigan written by Sandi Lewis-Malburg and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2019 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than a century ago, Mason County was a much different, harsher place. Arriving by foot and boat to find a dense wilderness, hardy pioneers carved out tiny settlements stretching right to the coast of Lake Michigan. When the lumber industry arrived in Michigan, the settlements grew to boomtowns and new towns formed. To serve the lumber industry, the railroad spread across the county, and immigrants and settlers flooded in to have their chance at the American Dream. But when the lumber ran out, the mills closed down. Jobs disappeared, and so did these towns. Out of the thirty-nine settlements, only two cities and six fading villages remain today. Join local author Sandi Lewis-Malburg as she uncovers the towns that time forgot.
