Book Texte Dans la Musique Populaire Afro am ricaine

Download or read book Texte Dans la Musique Populaire Afro am ricaine written by Robert Springer and published by Peter Lang Publishing. This book was released on 2001 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first international conference specifically devoted to the lyrics in African American popular music was held in Metz in September 2000 and gathered scholars and experts on blues, gospel song and rap. The eleven contributions, three of which in French, contained in this volume turn their attention to structure and thematic and expressive content in the three genres. Their conclusions, more than ever, allow us to see black popular music as the ongoing oral history of African Americans.

Book Renegotiating French Identity

Download or read book Renegotiating French Identity written by Jane F. Fulcher and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-04-19 with total page 505 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Renegotiating French Identity, Jane Fulcher addresses the question of cultural resistance to the German occupation and Vichy regime during the Second World War. Nazi Germany famously stressed music as a marker of national identity and cultural achievement, but so too did Vichy. From the opera to the symphony, music did not only serve the interests of Vichy and German propaganda: it also helped to reveal the motives behind them, and to awaken resistance among those growing disillusioned by the regime. Using unexplored Resistance documents, from both the clandestine press and the French National Archives, Fulcher looks at the responses of specific artists and their means of resistance, addressing in turn Pierre Schaeffer, Arthur Honegger, Francis Poulenc, and Olivier Messiaen, among others. This book investigates the role that music played in fostering a profound awareness of the cultural and political differences between conflicting French ideological positions, as criticism of Vichy and its policies mounted.

Book Discourses on Nations and Identities

Download or read book Discourses on Nations and Identities written by Daniel Syrovy and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2021-01-18 with total page 612 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The third volume of the collected papers of the ICLA congress "The Many Languages of Comparative Literature" includes contributions that focus on the interplay between concepts of nation, national languages, and individual as well as collective identities. Because all literary communication happens within different kinds of power structures - linguistic, economic, political -, it often results in fascinating forms of hybridity. In the first of four thematic chapters, the papers investigate some of the ways in which discourses can establish modes of thinking, or how discourses are in turn controlled by active linguistic interventions, whether in the context of the patriarchy, war, colonialism, or political factions. The second thematic block is predominantly concerned with hybridity as an aspect of modern cultural identity, and the cultural and linguistic dimensions of domestic life and in society at large. Closely related, a third series of papers focuses on writers and texts analysed from the vantage points of exile and exophony, as well as theoretical contributions to issues of terminology and what it means to talk about transcultural phenomena. Finally, a group of papers sheds light on more overtly violent power structures, mechanisms of exclusion, Totalitarianism, torture, and censorship, but also resistance to these forms of oppression. In addition to these chapters, the volume also collects a number of thematically related group sections from the ICLA congress, preserving their original context.

Book Revisiting the Historiography of Postwar Avant Garde Music

Download or read book Revisiting the Historiography of Postwar Avant Garde Music written by Anne-Sylvie Barthel-Calvet and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-07-29 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of essays delves into the historiographical traditions that have dominated how the stories of European postwar avant-garde music are told, seeking to approach commonplaces of that history writing from new perspectives. The contributors revisit subjects as varied as the impact of long-playing records on the emergence of open works, Messiaen’s interest in non-European musical traditions, Xenakis’s turn to information theory, Kagel’s strategic invention of a new genre, Berio’s dependence on funding from American foundations, and the ways in which figures like Boulez, Stockhausen, Pousseur, and Nono constructed their musical ancestries. Leading experts in their respective fields, the volume’s authors have sought to rethink the historiography of European experimental music of the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s in ways that resituate that small but influential milieu in broader historical and cultural contexts. In doing so, they suggest new directions and insights for students and specialists of twentieth-century music and music historiography.
