Book excerpt: This book is a compilation of peer reviewed chapters which address the dynamics of biodiversity and ecosystem services (ESSs) used at Lake Ngami in Northern Botswana. This book focuses on the implications of the ESSs used in terms of human well-being and sustainability, with Lake Ngami as a case study. Three broad cross-cutting themes are addressed: 1) The interaction between ESSs and direct drivers of ecosystem change such as flooding, climate change and variability; 2) the relationship between ESSs and institutions (rules, beliefs, norms, markets and property rights); and 3) the relationship between changes in ESSs and human well-being. In order to address these themes, the authors have divided the book into five parts: 1) Introduction and Background, 2) Supporting and Regulating ESSs, 3) Provisioning ESSs, 4) Cultural ESSs, and 5) Strategy for ESSs' Governance and Policy Implications. The book demonstrates how the ESSs of Lake Ngami have the potential to make a substantial contribution to human-well-being. However, due to the variability in the flooding of the Okavango River, which results in decadal and longer dry periods in the lake, the benefits derived from ESSs by the local population cannot be guaranteed for the future. The contributors to this book are researchers with a plurality of backgrounds in natural and social sciences with diverse views. The policy recommendations suggested by some of the authors could contribute to the sustainable use and management of ESSs of wetlands in semi-arid environments.

Book excerpt: Droughts are a major hazard to both natural and human-dominated environments and those, especially of long duration and high intensity, can be highly damaging and leave long-lasting effects. This book describes the climatic conditions that give rise to droughts, and their various forms and chief attributes. Past droughts are described including those that had severe impacts on human societies. As a disturbance, droughts can be thought of as “ramps” in that they usually build slowly and take time to become evident. As precipitation is reduced, flows from catchments into aquatic systems decline. As water declines in water bodies, ecological processes are changed and the biota can be drastically reduced, though species and populations may survive by using refuges. Recovery from drought varies in both rates and in degrees of completeness and may be a function of both refuge availability and connectivity. For the first time, this book reviews the available rather scattered literature on the impacts of drought on the flora, fauna and ecological processes of aquatic ecosystems ranging from small ponds to lakes and from streams to estuaries. The effects of drought on the biota of standing waters and flowing waters and of temporary waters and perennial systems are described and compared. In addition, the ways in which human activity can exacerbate droughts are outlined. In many parts of the world especially in the mid latitudes, global warming may result in increases in the duration and intensity of droughts. Drought and Aquatic Ecosystems is essential reading for freshwater ecologists, water resource managers and advanced students.

Dogs have disappeared from 25 of the 39 countries where they were previously found, and only 6 populations are believed to number more than 100. The dramatic reduction in their population is attributed to a number of factors including human population growth and activities, deterioration of habitat, and contact with domestic dogs and their diseases. C942 Rev. 3 is an important baseline document, intended to assist in the global understanding of inland fisheries and inform dialogue on their current and future role. The third revision reviews the status and trends of inland fisheries catch at global, continental and subcontinental levels. It places inland capture fisheries in the context of overall global fish production, and calls attention to the importance of inland capture fisheries with respect to food security and nutrition and the Sustainable Development Goals. It quantifies global inland fisheries resources in terms of food production, nutrition, employment, economic contribution with respect to those countries/regions or subnational areas where they are important. A characterization approach to distinguish large-scale and small-scale fishing operations and their relative contributions is provided. The review provides estimated economic values of inland fisheries, as well as a valuation of potential replacement cost of these (in terms of dollars, other resources such as land and water, feeds). There is also an analysis of the extent and economic value of recreational inland fisheries. The contribution to employment and the gender differences related to this are quantified. The linkages between inland fisheries and biodiversity are also explored. C942 Rev. 3 discusses ways to measure and assess inland fisheries, in particular, how to establish more accurately inland fishery catches in the many situations where there are challenges to collection of catch statistics.
