Book excerpt: The thesis problematizes and critiques the common theoretical assumption of the encompassing singularity of the "economization of education" in the Indian context. It interrogates whether and how enactments of "economization" are constituted by fragmentary and contested practices. I deploy a purposeful focus on the plurality, conflicts, and "conditioned contingencies" to explore: a) the distinctiveness, disjunctions, and differences within economizing discourses and interventions; b) the entanglements among economizing processes and social, moral, emotional, and political relations; c) the implications of various economizing techniques and rationalities; and d) the dependency of economization processes on other technologies of thoughts and practices in order to pose educational problems in economic terms. In order to explore these dynamics, I interrogate: i) how the division between the economic and non-economic domains is constituted; ii) how valuations and meanings are created through economic vocabularies and calculations that (re)configure goods, human bodies, institutional arrangements, and encounters; and iii) how monetary evaluations of educational matters are intertwined in webs of meanings, significations, and symbolic exchanges and representations. To accomplish these goals, the thesis examines three inter-related "agents" of economization: a) theories and conceptualizations; b) technical and institutional arrangements; and c) the modalities of valuing things. The thesis explores how educational concepts, practices, institutions, and relations become entangled with economization processes in disparate sites of knowledge production and practices of governing. It argues for a recognition of the historical contingency and the contested nature of economization processes. By examining the relations and translations of traveling discursive practices, the thesis contends that the economization of education is not an exclusively regressive, instrumentalist, alienating, and disembedded process. It has enabling potentials to further social justice goals and is deeply embedded in the moral and political lives of individuals and society.

Resituating the history of postcolonial neoliberal technique in expert circuits between the United States and Bangladesh, Murphy traces the methods and imaginaries through which family planning calculated lives not worth living, lives not worth saving, and lives not worth being born. The resulting archive of thick data transmuted into financialized “Invest in a Girl” campaigns that reframed survival as a question of human capital. The book challenges readers to reject the economy as our collective container and to refuse population as a term of reproductive justice.
