Download or read book New Seeds and Poor People written by Michael Lipton and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2010-11-29 with total page 498 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1989, this book deals with the impact of cereal production upon the Third World, specifically ‘Modern Varieties’ (MVs). Using evidence from plant breeding, economics and nutrition science, the authors seek to pinpoint what has been achieved, what has gone wrong and what needs to be done in future. Although the technical innovations of MVs mean more employment, cheaper food and less risk for small farmers, the reduction in crop diversity increases the risk of danger from pests and though MVs enlarge cereal stocks, many are too poor to afford them. The book concludes that technical breakthroughs alone won’t solve deep-rooted social problems and that only new policies and research priorities will increase the choices, assets and power of the rural poor.

Download or read book Resources Technology and Sustainability written by Joydeb Sasmal and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-04-23 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book uses sound theoretical frameworks and econometric techniques to rigorously analyze and explain the conditions of sustainable growth in agriculture. It further investigates how management of natural resources and technological advances can enhance productivity and ensure sustainable growth in agriculture. Optimal control theory, dynamic optimization problems and theory of risk and uncertainty are extensively used to create theoretical models for analyzing agricultural growth. The results demonstrate that crop diversification, rainwater harvesting and the use of organic fertilizers can ensure growth in agriculture from a dynamic perspective. Further, they show how excessive depletion of ground water, intensive farming and overuse of chemicals in connection with the adoption of modern technology in agriculture have placed tremendous strains on natural resources like land and water, and have called into question the sustainability of growth in the farming sector.
Download or read book India and the Age of Crisis written by Michael Gillan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-17 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much of the discussion of India in the public sphere has focused on economic policy settings and restructuring, annual growth rates, trade relations and the nation’s status as an economic and political actor within the international system. This collection considers other dimensions of socio-economic transformation in India and its profound impact on society and nature. While economic and ecological fragility are now very apparently problems of a ‘global’ scale they are nevertheless grounded and experienced at the local scale where vulnerable and marginal people located in the urban periphery and in rural areas confront these ‘crises’ most acutely. The studies in this collection encompass many of the most important social and political concerns of India in this age of crisis, namely, the politics of water resources and land acquisition and use; the interaction between food security, markets, and institutions; the politics and strategies of labour movements; narratives and practices of ‘development’ and contestation over forms of agrarian production in India; the link between urbanisation and local class, caste and political actors; and the potential for civil society to either be co-opted or to contest neoliberal logics and forms of governance. This book was published as a special issue of the Journal of South Asian Studies.
