Book Economics for Upper Grades

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Economics for Upper Grades The war has stirred mightily the hearts of men. Exaltation, sacrifice, and service have suffered their inevitable reaction. The development of industry has brought new alignments, and though these would have confronted us in any case, yet now, in the reaction from a great emotion, the world that meets them is a troubled, a hesitant, a disappointed world. Old conceptions, some of them as old as the nation, which were once accepted as we accept the sunrise or the rule of three, are called upon to prove their own validity. Democracy is no longer a question of a constitution or a code of laws; it is enmeshed in problems of wages and costs and distribution. We cannot understand our politics unless we study our economics. Perhaps it is as well that Americans are being compelled to analyze the truth of principles they so long have taken for granted, if for no other reason than that they have accepted them too casually, and too indolently. The political heritage of a people will not endure neglect. Such things as representative government, the rule of the majority, the liberty of opinion, obedience to law, were gained by painful effort, and only painful effort will retain them. These ideas and others akin to them are the sacred things of the Republic. In the Egypt of the ancients, it was the duty of a priesthood to preserve the traditions of the people. Education and those engaged in education are the priesthood of the modern time. They it is who must keep the torch alight and through the children pass it to succeeding generations. It is the purpose of this book to examine the economic foundations of our national welfare and to point out some of the simpler and more direct methods of strengthening these foundations, to the end that our nation and all nations that aim at democracy and justice may prosper more and more. Book Elementary Economics With Special Reference to Social and Business Conditions in the United States Classic Reprint

Download or read book Elementary Economics With Special Reference to Social and Business Conditions in the United States Classic Reprint written by Charles Manfred Thompson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-30 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Economics With Special Reference to Social, and Business Conditions in the United States Recent events have brought the people Of the United States face to face with numerous new economic problems, many Of which are likely to remain unsolved for years to come; besides, they have complicated to a marked degree those Old problems which were pressing for solution at the outbreak of the Great War. In consequence, our leaders are becoming more and more convinced that increased attention Should be given in our secondary schools to a serious consideration Of the fundamental principles on which these problems rest. Such a conviction is a new one in many quarters, for hitherto the notion has very generally prevailed, especially among uni versity teachers, that no formal study Of the Principles of Economics should be undertaken before the sophomore year in college. Obviously such a notion carries the implication, un conscious perhaps, that the fundamentals Of Economics, even in their simplest forms, should be withheld from the great mass of young men and women engaged in industry, and restricted to the select few who are able by one means or another to be come college students. Such a notion not only carries vicious implication, but it also is ill founded; for hundreds Of high schools the country over prove by experience that their pupils are fully capable of grasping the elements of economic science when presented concretely and in a way to show their relationship to practical affairs. Book Economics in One Lesson

Download or read book Economics in One Lesson written by Henry Hazlitt and published by Crown Currency. This book was released on 2010-08-11 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With over a million copies sold, Economics in One Lesson is an essential guide to the basics of economic theory. A fundamental influence on modern libertarianism, Hazlitt defends capitalism and the free market from economic myths that persist to this day. Considered among the leading economic thinkers of the “Austrian School,” which includes Carl Menger, Ludwig von Mises, Friedrich (F.A.) Hayek, and others, Henry Hazlitt (1894-1993), was a libertarian philosopher, an economist, and a journalist. He was the founding vice-president of the Foundation for Economic Education and an early editor of The Freeman magazine, an influential libertarian publication. Hazlitt wrote Economics in One Lesson, his seminal work, in 1946. Concise and instructive, it is also deceptively prescient and far-reaching in its efforts to dissemble economic fallacies that are so prevalent they have almost become a new orthodoxy. Economic commentators across the political spectrum have credited Hazlitt with foreseeing the collapse of the global economy which occurred more than 50 years after the initial publication of Economics in One Lesson. Hazlitt’s focus on non-governmental solutions, strong — and strongly reasoned — anti-deficit position, and general emphasis on free markets, economic liberty of individuals, and the dangers of government intervention make Economics in One Lesson every bit as relevant and valuable today as it has been since publication.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Economics: Lesson 1 Within the past century man 's increasing control over the forces of nature-his ability to make them werk for him - has enormously increased the production-of wealth in-civilized countries. The average money income of the English family of five persons is now per annum as against $375 in 1820, and owing to the greater cheap ness of commodities, this trill purchase nearly as much as would have purchased in 1820. In a word, the average English family is from four-to five times as well 05 as it was a century ago. Its income has from four to five times the former purchasing power. (see Mar shalt's Principles of Economics, 5th edition; page 751, note). This fact is of tremendous significance. It means that we have reason to hope that in the course of time an ever-increasing portion of our people will be released from the drudgery of mechanical manual labour and will be able to devote a large part of their time to public affairs, literature, art, science and religion. Rl'he utiliza tion of the elements in the service of man is giving us the necessary economic basis for a real democracy' in which all the citizens will be men of education and cul ture. Book Studies in Economics Classic Reprint

Download or read book Studies in Economics Classic Reprint written by William Smart and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-12-06 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in Economics That the theory of Value is the beginning of economic science, and compelled me to revise all my conclusions in the searching light of that theory. Whether a practical experience is altogether helpful to clear thinking or not, may be doubtful, but it has at all events prevented me from looking for the exactly calculable movements of natural law in a many-motived society, where industrial pursuits are often ends as well as means. And whether the Austrian School, as a whole, is too deductive in its tendencies or not, no training can be too abstract for one who is, naturally and by education, too apt to lose himself in the fallacy of the particular instance. Book Descriptive Economics

Download or read book Descriptive Economics written by Louis Lafayette Williams and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2019-01-13 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Descriptive Economics: An Introduction to Economic Science The work is a wide departure from the ordinary plan of most elementary works on Political Economy, or, as it is preferably called, Economics. These works generally commence with an abstract discussion of wealth or value. In the following pages the terms wealth and value are nowhere used in a technical sense, and the same is true of most of the technical terms of Economics. At the same time, however, the theories to which these terms give rise, are indirectly discussed and all the well known propositions of Economics are clearly and fully set forth. It is hoped that the student and reader will find here the collection of economic phenomena, classified and arranged as required for the more abstract reasoning and generalizations relating to the higher branches of the subject. Book Talks on Banking and Elementary Economics 1922 1923 To Be Delivered by the Banker Before the Higher Grades of Grammar Schools High Schools College

Download or read book Talks on Banking and Elementary Economics 1922 1923 To Be Delivered by the Banker Before the Higher Grades of Grammar Schools High Schools College written by American Bankers Association and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2019-02-11 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Talks on Banking and Elementary Economics, 1922-1923: To Be Delivered by the Banker Before the Higher Grades of Grammar Schools, High Schools, Colleges and Universities The bankers whose talks were of greatest benefit last year were those who, after each third or fourth talk invited the teachers and the pupils of the classes to visit the banks to visualize what had been discussed; who there took pains to make the visitors feel that they were truly welcome and that a bank is, in a large measure, a public institution, created for the best possible community advancement, and an institution which desires above all things to serve. While bankers, not accustomed to public speaking, may approach this new duty with some hesitation, they will soon find in it a charm that will make them want to continue a work which must ultimately prove of inestimable value to the banker's community, and to the country at large, to say nothing of the banking business itself to which many benefits will accrue from a greater general prosperity. Immediately upon receipt of these Talks, the banker should get in touch with the school authorities nearest his bank, and arrange for the date and hour when he is to appear at the school. The local banker should endeavor to arrange with his newspaper for the publication of these Talks as soon as possible after the date set for their release. The Committee on Public Education bespeaks for this work the earnest and thoughtful cooperation of the bankers of America. Book Elements of Economics

Download or read book Elements of Economics written by Henry Reed Burch and published by . This book was released on 2016-07-24 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of Economics: With Special Reference to American Conditions, for the Use of High Schools The growing importance of the newer economics makes necessary a simple statement of its fundamental principles. The present work, designed especially for the use of secondary schools, has been prepared with this object in view. Since the book is intended primarily for the begin ner, every effort has been made to secure simplicity of treatment. This simplicity manifests itself chie y in two directions. In the first place, emphasis has been laid upon the con crete and descriptive side of economics. Great attention, therefore, has been paid to the subject of the production of wealth, and much material of an industrial character has been added. In the second place, each chapter is preceded by an outline of its contents and followed by a series of questions which bear on the general topic of the chapter. In those schools where only a very limited amount of time can be devoted to the study of economics, it will be found possible to omit or summarize certain parts of the book according to the special needs of the students, or the particular inclination of the teacher. Book Economics of Liberty Classic Reprint

Download or read book Economics of Liberty Classic Reprint written by John Beverley Robinson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-18 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Economics of Liberty Everybody nowadays is talking or writ ing about Society - society in the abstract general human society. Social service, the social uplift - all the phrases, half discredited in ad vance by the fluency with which they drop from our lips - what do these really mean? Wise professors of sociology treat of the housing of the poor, the problem of the un employed, devise futile formulas, and pile up mountains of barren statistics, while no one in recent times has uttered even an outline of a theory as to the essential constitution of that Society of which Sociology, by its very name, proclaims itself the science. We habitually regard the headless, formless chaos of absurdities in human relations, in the midst of which we live, as Society, but we are without an intellectual norm to guide us: we have evolved as yet no concept with which to rationalize the observed facts. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Foundations of Economics In the year 1885, under the influence of Carlyle and llushin, I set myself to investigate the Condi tion-of-england-question, and with what I now see to have been singular good fortune I began on the problem of over-production. Is over-production the cause of Hard Times? I have come to a solution of that. Which satisfies myself. And while doing so I have had to recast most of the economic formulae. Some of them I have attached as untrue. Others I have replaced by new definitions, which seem to me to go a little deeper into the truth. Book Schools and Streams of Economic Thought Classic Reprint

Download or read book Schools and Streams of Economic Thought Classic Reprint written by Edmund Whittaker and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-30 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Schools and Streams of Economic Thought For the most part, the writers whose works are studied are allowed to tell their own stories in short quotations from their works, when these are available in English and such a practice can be followed without disturbing the narrative or using too much space. Where quotations are made, references ordinarily are given to the editions used. Use has sometimes depended on convenience, but in most in stances the sources are available in the larger libraries. Where there are a number of editions of the same book and it seems appropriate, references are made to chapters and sections rather than to pages of particular editions. With one exception (in a papal encyclical), the King James version has been used for Bible quotations. The book has been prepared on the assumption that few of its readers are likely to want to check authorities which are unavailable to them except in foreign languages but that many may desire to do so when only English is involved. This may be an unscholarly view to take, but it is a realistic one. References are given accordingly. Names have been given in full when a writer is first mentioned in an important connection. It is unsatisfactory to be able only to refer to a person as this or that because one is unaware of what the initials represent. Where, as sometimes with French writers, there are too many given names for this practice to seem reasonable, one or more of these names are omitted, as may appear appropriate. British peers are given their correct titles. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
