Download or read book Economic Stabilization for Developing Countries written by Anthony Clunies Ross and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 1991 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An introduction to macroeconomics in developing countries, this book presents the main elements of macroeconomics and shows how the models produced for industrialized societies need to be modified for various groups of less developed countries. It is desogned for those with little or no knowledge of economics, but who wish to understand the issues involved in the stabilizing of national income and the price level, and in keeping a sustainable balance of payments. It focuses on a number of measures designed to create stability including fiscal policy, the exchange rate, wages and interest rates. There are several case studies of policy experiments conducted since the mid 1970s.

Book Stabilization Policies in Developing Countries with a Parallel Market for Foreign Exchange

Download or read book Stabilization Policies in Developing Countries with a Parallel Market for Foreign Exchange written by Pierre-Richard Agénor and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 1990-03-01 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The paper develops and tests a model of a developing economy that incorporates trade and capital restrictions, illegal transactions, a parallel foreign exchange market, currency substitution features, and forward-looking rational expectations. Temporary expansionary demand policies are associated with an increase in output and prices, a fall in the stock of net foreign assets, and a depreciation of the parallel exchange rate. The speed of adjustment is inversely related to the degree of rationing in the official foreign currency market. A once-for–all devaluation of the official exchange rate has no long-term effect on the premium.

Book Economic Stabilization and Debt in Developing Countries

Download or read book Economic Stabilization and Debt in Developing Countries written by Richard N. Cooper and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 1992 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on preliminary results from a massive study conducted by the World Bank to probe the links between stabilization and growth, Cooper examines the experience of developing countries faced by the oil shocks of the 1970s and the debt crisis of the 1980s. He points out that a global slowdown in growth has shifted the main economic concern in developing countries from long-term growth to stabilization and adjustment. Cooper takes into account the cross-country variables that influence the degree to which a country is affected negatively or positively by external shocks and covers such topics as political organization and external debt resolution. The first chapter focuses on countries that experienced adverse shocks from the sharp increase in oil prices beginning in 1974. It also addresses countries that should have benefited from the oil price increase, and from a comparable increase in coffee prices, for which events turned out to be less favorable than they seemed. The second chapter analyzes the "disabsorption" a country faces when it can no longer rely on foreign lending or advantageous terms of trade; it also looks at inflationary pressures and at the role of the International Monetary Fund in designing stabilization programs for its member countries. The third chapter discusses the main influences on a country's economic performance and also discusses the lessons offered for successful stabilization and long-term growth. Moving from individual developing nations to the world economic system, the final two chapters examine the question of external debt and why it has proved to be such an international stumbling block, offering suggestions on how it might be resolved.

Book Macroeconomic Stability in Developing Countries

Download or read book Macroeconomic Stability in Developing Countries written by Peter Montiel and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2004 with total page 49 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In the 1990s macroeconomic policies improved in a majority of developing countries, but the growth dividend from such improvement fell short of expectations, and a policy agenda focused on stability turned out to be associated with a multiplicity of financial crises. Montiel and Serven take a retrospective look at the content and implementation of the macroeconomic reform agenda of the 1990s. They review the progress achieved with fiscal, monetary, and exchange rate policies across the developing world, and the effectiveness of the changing policy framework in promoting stability and growth. The main lesson is that slow growth and frequent crises resulted, more often than not, from shortcomings in the reform agenda of the 1990s. These shortcomings essentially concern the depth and breadth of the macroeconomic reform agenda, its attention to macroeconomic vulnerabilities, and the complementary reforms outside the macroeconomic sphere"--Abstract.

Book Stability with Growth

Download or read book Stability with Growth written by Joseph Stiglitz and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2006-08-31 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is growing dissatisfaction with the economic policies advocated by the IMF and other international financial institutions - policies that have often resulted in stagnating growth, crises, and recessions for client countries. This book presents an alternative to "Washington Consensus" neo-liberal economic policies by showing that both macro-economic and liberalization policy must be sensitive to the particular circumstances of developing countries. One-size-fits-all policy prescriptions are likely to fail given the vast differences between countries. This book discusses how alternative approaches to economic policy can better serve developing countries both in ordinary times and in times of crisis.
