[...] In addition to regular communication and meetings, the project will host two workshops: one at the outset to get researchers and policymakers to agree on areas for research that are relevant to policy, and the other at the end of the project to share research findings and policy recommendations with key actors in the sector. [...] That is expected to slow down the growth and pace of populist executives with agendas to reform the neoliberal policies instituted through the region in the 1980s and 1990s. [...] That is very much driven by fundamental disagreements between the current Conservative administration and the CSOs in issues of human rights, economic development and participation of the Canadian private sector in extractive industries in the developing world. [...] The trade relations of Canada and Latin America plus the Caribbean have grown according to the systematic efforts done by mostly the former to sign bilateral trade agreements and foreign investment protection treaties since the 1990s and through the early 2000s. [...] It provides a brief overview of how the role of aid has evolved in Canada's foreign policy, including a short discussion on the recent announcement by the Canadian government that it would be merging the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) into the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade (DFAIT) to create the Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development (DFATD).

Book Canada in the Americas

Download or read book Canada in the Americas written by and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 25 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper examines how Latin American and Caribbean countries have begun a deep transformation and how this progress of change heightens the importance of the region for Canada and for Canadian foreign policy. It begins with a review of Canadian policy initiatives in the region since 1989 and of the transformations occurring in Latin America and the Caribbean, both economic and political. The heart of the paper is section four, which presents proposals for strengthening Canada's relations with the region on a mutually beneficial basis under three main headings: creating prosperity on a sustainable basis, including trade promotion and investment support; political good government, including provision of technical expertise in the areas of human rights, elections, regulatory reform, and the role of the military; and building bridges, such as enhancing contacts through multilateral channels like the Organization of American States.

Book Revisiting the Link between Trade Growth and Inequality

Download or read book Revisiting the Link between Trade Growth and Inequality written by Ms.Kimberly Beaton and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2017-03-09 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We revisit the relationship between international trade, economic growth and inequality with a focus on Latin America and the Caribbean. The paper combines two approaches: First, we employ a cross-country panel framework to analyze the macroeconomic effects of international trade on economic growth and inequality considering the strength of trade connections as well as characteristics of countries’ export markets and products. Second, we consider event studies of past episodes of trade liberalization to extract general lessons on the impact of trade liberalization on economic growth and its structure and inequality. Both approaches consistently point to two broad messages: First, trade openness and connectivity to the center of the trade network has substantial macroeconomic benefits. Second, we do not find a statistically significant or economically sizable direct impact of trade on overall income inequality.

  • ISBN : 1597823651
  • Pages : 381 pages

Download or read book Trading Promises for Results written by Mauricio Mesquita Moreira and published by Inter-American Development Bank. This book was released on 2019-09-23 with total page 381 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thirty years after the region embarked on large-scale liberalization, trade policy could have been expected to become all but irrelevant. Instead, a mismatch between expectations and what could realistically be delivered set the stage for much of the disappointment, skepticism, and fatigue regarding trade policy in the region, particularly in the early 2000s. By setting the bar unrealistically high, governments and analysts made trade policies an easy target for special interests that were hurt by liberalization and for those ideologically opposed to free trade. The most immediate victims were the more tangible growth and welfare gains, whose relevance was lost amid the noise of grandiose visions.
