Book Handbook of Economic Growth

Download or read book Handbook of Economic Growth written by Philippe Aghion and published by Newnes. This book was released on 2013-12-20 with total page 1172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volumes 2A and 2B of The Handbook of Economic Growth summarize recent advances in theoretical and empirical work while offering new perspectives on a range of growth mechanisms, from the roles played by institutions and organizations to the ways factors beyond capital accumulation and technological change can affect growth. Written by research leaders, the chapters summarize and evaluate recent advances while explaining where further research might be profitable. With analyses that are provocative and controversial because they are so directly relevant to public policy and private decision-making, these two volumes uphold the standard for excellence in applied economics set by Volumes 1A and 1B (2005). - Offers definitive theoretical and empirical scholarship about growth economics - Empowers readers to evaluate the work of other economists and to plan their own research projects - Demonstrates the value of empirical testing, with its implicit conclusion that our understanding of economic growth will help everyone make better decisions

Book Organizations Individualism and Economic Theory

Download or read book Organizations Individualism and Economic Theory written by Maria Brouwer and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-08-21 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most economic theory is based on the assumption that economies grow in a linear fashion. Recessions, depressions and (financial) crises are explained by policy mistakes. However, economic development has historically been uneven, and this state of affairs continues today. This book argues that twentieth century economic theory has marginalized individualism and organizational variety, and puts forward the case for a pluralist approach. This book represents a unique synthesis of business theory and economic theory, which pinpoints the problems with many current mainstream theories and sets out new agendas for research. Here, Maria Brouwer argues that market competition is not about adapting to changes from outside, but is driven by human motivation and goal directed behavior. This gives managerial skills, which do not traditionally have a significant place in mainstream economic theory, a key role. It also highlights the need for organizations that have a motivational culture and appreciate human capital. This differs from the traditional view of the firm as a production function dictated by technology. Brower argues that organizations should be depicted as voluntary associations of people that pursue goals of their own, while firms compete on markets, where relative performance determines their fate. This argument builds on older theories of innovation and market competition that live on in business school curricula, and paints a picture of an economy directed by individuals and firms. This signals a bold departure from standard economic thinking.

Book Fragile States in an Unequal World

Download or read book Fragile States in an Unequal World written by Isabel Rocha de Siqueira and published by Open Book Publishers. This book was released on 2022-10-26 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a book about people. ‘Fragile States’ in an Unequal World: The Role of the g7+ in International Diplomacy and Development Cooperation introduces the members of the g7+, a group formed by 20 conflict-affected states: why they came to believe in politics and policy; how they feel about their work, their family and their communities; and what they want to leave behind for the next generations. It is the story of their personal and collective values, their mistakes, and the challenges they faced, and it will resonate with anyone who has tried to organize and work with a group of very different people. This book is also a contribution for those seeking to influence international policy, especially from a disadvantageous position. It explores how to find your voice, use your survival skills, work with passion, decide how much to concede and act responsibly. Together, these lessons illuminate the paths that individual members have walked as they found their own voices, as well as how the g7+ fights to speak collectively. The book ends with a glimpse of the way forward, as Isabel Rocha de Siqueira encourages younger generations to engage with politics and policy generously, with hope for the future. Combining literature and hard facts – along with other elements such as illustrations, cartoon strips and photographs to tell the previously untold stories of public servants in poor, conflict-affected countries, the book offers an original (and very human) micro and macro perspective on the politics of development. It will be of interest to professionals in major development organisations, students and professors in development courses, policymakers, public servants, civil society, activists working for major international NGOs, and journalists who report on the development industry, as well as those with a general interest in international development cooperation, international diplomacy and other related fields.

Book Religion and Poverty

Download or read book Religion and Poverty written by Benjamin Beit-Hallahmi and published by Neofelis Verlag. This book was released on 2015-09-23 with total page 155 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nowadays religions are especially important for those who are living in countries of the formerly so-called 'Third World'. The miseries of life seem to be so hard that just an afterlife in a transcendent paradise is promising relief. Consequently, there seems to be a close connection between religion and poverty, especially in the 21st century, when the hope for a better afterlife has become a driving force of the poor population of the world. However, what could be interpreted as a proof of the Marxist doctrine of religion as opium of the people, for sure deserves a more multiperspectival approach, which would not just cover the recent years of human history, but past centuries as well as the different religions around the globe. Therefore the second issue of Global Humanities traces the interrelationship between religion and poverty not only from a historical, but also from a sociological, religious and artistic perspective.
