Book excerpt: An economic analysis and optimization of forest biomass processing and transportation at the operational level is presented. Renewable sources of energy have captured the interest of public and private institutions to develop cost-effective supply chains to reduce dependence on fossil fuels. The production of energy from forest harvest residues constitutes an opportunity to develop a supply chain for producing heat, electricity and liquid fuels from renewable materials. Special interest has been directed to the production of aviation fuel given the characteristics of the commercial aircraft technology that cannot use other renewable sources such as electricity, nuclear power or wind turbines. In economic terms, the production of energy from forest harvest residues at actual market prices requires efficient cost management and planning in order to compete with traditional fossil fuel supply chains. Efficient cost management requires an understanding of the operational stages in order to propose alternatives to improve the planning process, reduce costs, and increase the chance of success of this emerging supply chain. The main goal of this study is to improve cost-efficiency of an emerging energy supply chain from forest harvest residues. A general objective is the economic optimization of forest biomass processing and transportation at the operational level. We developed a model and frame-work to analyze the economics of forest biomass processing and transportation using mixed integer programming (MIP), simulation, Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and forest operation analysis. We developed an economic costing model that accounts for the cost of machinery and truck waiting time. The study is primarily focused on difficult access steep-land regions although it can also be applied to areas with less restricted road access. A stochastic discrete-event simulation model was developed to estimate cost management strategies to improve economics of mobile chipping operations and analyze the effect of uncertainty in this type of operation. The model was successful in predicting productivity of actual forest biomass recovery operations. The model also allowed analyzing the economic effect of truck-machine interactions when using mobile equipment to process the forest residues With stationary processing equipment, the economic effect of truck-machine interactions on closely coupled operations was analyzed through a simulation model. It was demonstrated that truck-machine interactions affect machine utilization rates and, thus, the economics of the operation. Truck-machine interaction must be accounted for when analyzing forest recovery operations to avoid inaccurate cost estimation. Finally a mathematical solution procedure based on mixed integer programming, GIS and simulation was developed to support planning decisions in forest biomass recovery operations, including economic modeling of the effect of waiting times. The solution procedure was incorporated in the decision support system, Residue Evaluation and Network Optimization (RENO) developed in JAVA platform. The decision support system was demonstrated to be an accurate and effective tool to estimate the most cost effective processing machinery and transport configuration given road access, material physical properties, spatial location of the residue piles and accounting for truck-machine interactions. Additionally, an Ant Colony heuristic is included in the model to bring support to the MIP branch and bound solution method by providing an initial solution for objective function. Japanese scientists have led the world, not only in collecting basic data, but in their attempts to systematise our knowledge of forest biomass. They have studied factors affecting dry matter production of forest trees in an attempt to approach underlying phYf'ical principles. This edition of Professor Satoo's book has been made possible the help of Dr John F. Hosner and the Virginia Poly technical Institute and State University who invited Dr Satoo to Blacksburg for three months in 1973 at about the time when he was in the final stages of preparing the Japanese version. Since then the explosion of world literature on forest biomass has continued to be fired by increasing shortages of timber supplies in many parts of the world as well as by a need to explore renewable sources of energy. In revising the original text I have attempted to maintain the input of Japanese work - much of which is not widely available outside Japan - and to update both the basic information and, where necessary, the conclusions to keep them in tune with current thinking. Those familiar with the Japanese original will find Chapter 3 largely rewritten on the basis of new work - much of which was initiated while Dr Satoo was in Blacksburg.

Sustainable energy challenges, however, require innovative manufacturing technologies and practices to mitigate energy and material consumption. This research aims to facilitate sustainable production of bioenergy from forest biomass and to promote deployment of novel processing equipment such as transportable biorefineries. The study integrates knowledge from the renewable energy production and supply chain management disciplines to evaluate economic and environmental targets of bioenergy production with the use of the multi-criteria decision making approach. The presented approach herein includes qualitative and quantitative methods to address the existing challenges and gaps in the bioenergy manufacturing system. The qualitative method employs decision tree analysis to classify the potential biomass harvesting sites, considering biomass quality and availability. The quantitative method proposes mathematical models to optimize the upstream and midstream biomass-tobioenergy supply chain cost, using mixed bio-refinery modes (transportable and fixed) and transportation pathways (traditional and new). The supply chain environmental impacts are assessed by considering the carbon footprint of the harvesting, collection, size reduction, transportation activities, and bio-refinery processing. While transportable bio-refineries are shown to reduce biomass-to-bioenergy supply chain costs, production and deployment of transportable bio-refineries are limited due to operational challenges associated with undeveloped mixed-mode bioenergy supply chains, as well as supply uncertainty. A case study for northwest Oregon, USA is undertaken using actual data to verify the proposed approach.

Book excerpt: With rising fuel costs and enhanced environmental concerns, the use of renewable energy has been steadily considered and widely expounded as a solution to the challenges of global energy security and climate change. The use of woody biomass, in particular, has received considerable attention for energy production due to the potential availability of large volumes from fuel reduction thinning operations and healthy forest restoration plans. However, woody biomass utilization is not as economically attractive as fossil fuel due to the high production and transportation costs compared to the relatively low market values of these materials. Therefore, identifying or developing cost effective production and transportation systems has become an economically critical issue to expand biomass utilization. In woody biomass production, the transportation of wood raw materials from the sources to the conversion facilities is the largest single component of production costs for many suppliers around the world. Therefore, small increases in transportation efficiency could significantly reduce the overall production costs. The purpose of this study was to provide new knowledge which leads to improvements in the economic feasibility of using woody biomass for energy through reductions in transportation costs. This dissertation: [1] Developed prediction models to estimate the travel times including terminal (loading and unloading) times to haul woody biomass from non-forest sources to conversion facilities in western Oregon and determined the effects of off-forest road classes on transportation times and costs. The travel time prediction model developed was shown to be a good predictor for travel time through a validation procedure. The average percent difference between actual and predicted travel times was only 6 percent. [2] Developed a computer model, named BIOTRANS, to estimate the biomass transportation productivity and cost and evaluated the effects on transportation costs of different truck configurations, transported material types, and travel route characteristics. Different truck configurations and transported material types significantly affected transportation costs. A 4 axle truck and single trailer was the most cost efficient hauling configuration for the conditions studied and shavings have 30 percent higher trucking costs than other material types. [3] Developed an optimization model to solve a truck scheduling problem for transporting four types of woody biomass in western Oregon. For an actual 50-load order size, the truck scheduling model produced significant improvements in solution values within 18 seconds. The average reductions in transportation cost and total travel time were 18% and 15%, respectively. [4] Reviewed collaborative management systems and described the potential implementation of collaborative transportation management in the woody biomass transportation industry.

However, research and development efforts have historically focused on the utilization of agriculturally-derived, cellulosic feedstocks without consideration of their low energy density, high variations in physical and chemical characteristics and potential supply risks in terms of availability and affordability. This Research Topic will explore strategies that enable supply chain improvements in biomass quality and consistency through blending, preprocessing, diversity and landscape design for development of conversion-ready, lignocellulosic feedstocks for production of biofuels and bio-products. Biomass variability has proven a formidable challenge to the emerging biorefining industry, impeding continuous operation and reducing yields required for economical production of lignocellulosic biofuels at scale. Conventional supply systems lack the preprocessing capabilities necessary to ensure consistent biomass feedstocks with physical and chemical properties that are compatible with supply chain operations and conversion processes. Direct coupling of conventional feedstock supply systems with sophisticated conversion systems has reduced the operability of biorefining processes to less than 50%. As the bioeconomy grows, the inherent variability of biomass resources cannot be managed by passive means alone. As such, there is a need to fully recognize the magnitude of biomass variability and uncertainty, as well as the cost of failing to design feedstock supply systems that can mitigate biomass variability and uncertainty. A paradigm shift is needed, from biorefinery designs using raw, single-resource biomass, to advanced feedstock supply systems that harness diverse biomass resources to enable supply chain resilience and development of conversion-ready feedstocks. Blending and preprocessing (e.g., drying, sorting, sizing, fractionation, leaching, densification, etc.) can mitigate variable quality and performance in diverse resources when integrated with downstream conversion systems. Decoupling feedstock supply from biorefining provides an opportunity to manage supply risks and incorporate value-added upgrading to develop feedstocks with improved convertibility and/ or market fungibility. Conversion-ready feedstocks have undergone the required preprocessing to ensure compatibility with conversion and utilization prior to delivery at the biorefinery and represent lignocellulosic biomass with physical and chemical properties that are tailored to meet the requirements of industrially-relevant handling and conversion systems.

This research explores the thoughts and actions of businesses involved in the harvest, collection, processing, and transportation of forest biomass to energy production facilities. Drawing on interviews with 21 firms in the industry, this research characterizes the industrial organization, activities, and decision-making of forest biomass harvesting businesses, and examines economic and policy barriers to the viability of the forest biomass-to-energy industry. The state's forest biomass-to-energy industry is organized around contractual relationships between landowners, the processing firms that collect, grind, and transport the biomass, and the energy producers which ultimately consume the biomass. Several types of barriers to entry characterize the forest biomass-to-energy industry, including equipment costs and the learning curve encountered by new processing businesses. In general, businesses' decision-making is driven by profit calculations, although economic models of supply and demand may not fully incorporate businesses' strategic responses to risks and policy incentives. Landowners and processors differ in key aspects of their biomass harvesting activities and strategy: landowners are less tolerant of taking risks, less likely to own biomass harvesting equipment, and less motivated by short-term profits than processing contractors. Policies intended to support the forest biomass-to-energy industry, such as the federal Biomass Crop Assistance Program and the state business and occupation (B&O) tax credit for forest-derived biomass, have not been sufficient to overcome countervailing economic forces limiting forest biomass harvest.

Logging generates forest residues – low-quality feedstock – and4 additional operations that also incur additional cost, such as biomass sorting and treetops processing (BSTP),5 micro-chipping, and screening, are required to improve the feedstock’s quality. Considering recent6 developments in technologies and BSTP to generate high-quality feedstocks, economic models were7 developed in this study to estimate various forest residues logistics operational costs and analyze the8 economics of delivering feedstocks to near-woods Biomass Conversion Technology (BCT) sites or to9 faraway-located power plants in the form of chips, hog-fuel, and bales.
