Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New suburban communities have sprung up all over America, while industrial plants and other commercial districts in the inner city have been left to decay. Nowhere is this more evident that the midwestern United States, where newly formed communities have funneled jobs and income from the inner city. Generally known as sprawl, the problem is particularly acute in those metropolitan areas where deconcentration is taking place-decline in the central city coupled with suburban growth. This process creates benefits in the sububrs, but also increasingly poses costs in the form of congestion and increased infrastructure costs. When Corporations Leave Town analyzes and develops a consistent and comprehensive cost-benefit analysis of employment deconcentration, focussing on central cities and their suburbs. Sprawl and deconcentration have become big issues in Vice President Albert Gore's presidential campaign, and are the subject of a growing number of policy initiatives, conferences, and research efforts by organizing such as the Urban Land Institute, the National Homebuilders Association, and the Brookings Institute. Joseph Persky and Wim Wiewel compare the costs and benefits of a firm's locating in the central city with locating in the suburbs. They use a hypothetical model of a large manufacturing plant and a business services office in the Chicago metropolitan area to calculate tangible and intangible costs such as population and traffic congestion, air pollution, housing abandonment, loss of farmland, tax liabilities, and the strain put on suburban public resources. Persky and Wiewel then explore a broad range of public policies advocated for reversing or mitigating metropolitan deconcentration.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A major concern of all decision makers has been to ensure that there are clear benefits from transport investment proposals. The travel time savings are clear, but the wider economic developments have presented enormous difficulty in terms of both theoretical arguments and empirical evidence. This book reviews the history of the debate and argues that the agenda has changed. These issues are presented together with a major analytical investigation of macroeconomic models, evaluation in transport and microeconomic approaches. The final part of the book presents a series of case studies for road, rail and airport investment schemes, particularly focusing on the economic development aspects.

And while it has retained many of the institutions that were present at its inception, its very tradition of committed growth means that every year brings dynamic change. As the Village assumed a crucial role in the recent economic development of the Golden Corridor that runs northwest of Chicago, its leadership has been charged with stewarding expansion without compromising community. Marcos Reynolds traces that ongoing transition through the remarkable people and events that embody its living heritage.
Download or read book Megacity Mobility written by Zongzhi Li and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2021-12-14 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: World population growth and economic prosperity have given rise to ever-increasing demands on cities, transportation planning, and goods movement. This growth, coupled with a slower pace of transportation capacity expansion and deteriorated facility restoration, has led to rapid changes in the transportation planning and policy environment. These stresses are particularly acute for megacities where degradation of mobility and facility performance have reached alarming rates. Addressing these transportation challenges requires innovative solutions. Megacity Mobility grapples with these challenges by addressing transportation policy, planning, and facilities in a multimodal context. It discusses innovative short- and long-term solutions for meeting current and future mobility needs for the world’s most dynamic cities by addressing the influence of urban land use on mobility, 3D spiderweb transportation planning, travel demand management, multimodal transportation with flexible capacity, efficient capacity utilization driven by new technologies, innovative transportation funding and financing, and performance-based budget allocation using asset management principles. It discusses emerging issues, highlights potential challenges affecting proposed solutions, and provides policymakers, planners, and transportation professionals a road map to achieving sustainable mobility in the 21st century. Zongzhi Li is a professor and the director of the Sustainable Transportation and Infrastructure Research (STAIR) Center at Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT). Adrian T. Moore is vice president of policy at Reason Foundation in Washington, D.C., with focuses on privatization, transportation and urban growth, and more. Samuel R. Staley is the director of the DeVoe L. Moore Center in the College of Social Sciences and Public Policy at Florida State University.
