Book excerpt: The forest sector is a key sector for the development of a circular bioeconomy and achievement of the SDGs. Clarity on the dimension of the benefits generated by wood production, including through other sectors of the economy can help build the case to support a sustainable growth of the forest sector, with increased sustainable management of natural and planted forests, and efficient and inclusive value chains. Analysis of national input-output matrix and calculation of economic multipliers can provide insights on the real magnitude of forest contributions to the national economies and highlight where policies towards sustainability can have a greater impact. This report presents the total economic contributions of the forest sector to national economies around the globe, based on estimations of the forest sector direct, indirect and induced effects on the economy derived from the national accounts input-output matrixes with the most recent data available (2015). The results can help stakeholders to understand the importance and multiplier effects of the forest sector to the national economy in a quantifiable way.

Book The Economic Contributions of Ohio s Forest Products Industry

Download or read book The Economic Contributions of Ohio s Forest Products Industry written by Carlos Jose Coronado and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 53 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Market forces have driven the downsizing and restructuring of the U.S. forest economy, which prompted our assessment of the current conditions of forestry and forest products manufacturing in Ohio. Economic modeling was used to determine the current state of Ohio's forest products industry. We constructed a series of input-output models with 2011 year data using the IMpact Analysis for PLANning system to determine the economic impacts of Ohio's forest-based industries. We then compared the 2011 findings to those from 2001, the year for which the industry impacts had last been assessed. Direct impacts of all forestry and forest products sectors in 2011 summed to 47,200 employees, $4.00 billion in value added, and $13.7 billion in outputs. Nearly all of the 2011 industry values in real terms were lower than those from 2001, which were inflation-adjusted to 2011 constant dollars. Input-output models were also constructed to describe the economic impacts of timber product outputs in Ohio and its three timber market regions - the Northeast, West, and Southeast- for 2012. Impact Analysis for PLANning was used to describe these impacts in terms of employment, output, and value added based on 1) the total value of outputs delivered to market by each region;s logging sector and 2) a per-unit change in the regionalized delivered value of one million board feet (MMBF) of hardwood sawtimber. Direct impacts of timber products were greatest in the Northeast (for output and value added) and Southeast (for employment). The total economic impacts of timber products in Ohio were 2,880 employees, $287 million in output, and $147 million in value added. The per-unit impact results were more varied due to regional differences in economies and timber price determinants. Employment and output economic impacts per MMBF were both highest in the Southeast.

Book The Economics of Forest Disturbances

Download or read book The Economics of Forest Disturbances written by Thomas P. Holmes and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-04-18 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: by Peter J. Roussopoulos, Director, Southern Research Station The world and its ecosystems are repeatedly punctuated by natural disturbances, and human societies must learn to manage this reality Often severe and unp- dictable, dynamic natural forces disrupt human welfare and alter the structure and composition of natural systems Over the past century, land management ag- cies within the United States have relied on science to improve the sustainable management of natural resources Forest economics research can help advance this scientifc basis by integrating knowledge of forest disturbance processes with their economic causes and consequences As the twenty-frst century unfolds, people increasingly seek the goods and services provided by forest ecosystems, not only for wood supply, clean water, and leisure pursuits, but also to establish residential communities that are removed from the hustle and bustle of urban life As vividly demonstrated during the past few years, Santa Ana winds can blow wildfres down from the mountains of California, incinerating homes as readily as vegetation in the canyons below Hurricanes can fatten large swaths of forest land, while associated foods create havoc for urban and rural residents alike Less dramatic, but more insidious, trees and forest stands are succumbing to exotic insects and diseases, causing economic losses to private property values (including timber) as well as scenic and recreation values As human demands on public and private forests expand, science-based solutions need to be identifed so that social needs can be balanced with the vagaries of forest disturbance processes

Book Forest Economics and Policy Analysis

Download or read book Forest Economics and Policy Analysis written by William F. Hyde and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 1991 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper identifies the essential features of the forestry economics literature emphasizing what is different about forestry and what are forestry's important features for project and program analysis. The important conclusion, is that economic tools are both available and appropriate for the analysis of a wide range of forest policy problems. The report is divided into two parts. The characteristics that received special attention in the first part are the embodiment of both productive capital and final output in any standing forest inventory, and the long time periods that often distinguish forest production. A third distinguishing characteristics is the joint production nature of many forest resource services. The second part of the paper visits seven special topics that are important to forestry and economic development: (1) timber production; (2) smallholder forest management; (3) forestry research, education, and extension; (4) tenure; (5) policy spillovers from other sectors of the economy that can substantially alter forests and forestland management; (6) non-timber multiple use values; and (7) deforestation, timber famine or its counter, sustainable forest management.

Book The Economics of the Tropical Timber Trade

Download or read book The Economics of the Tropical Timber Trade written by BarBier/Burgess and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1994-01-01 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is genuine cause for concern over the excessive exploitation of tropical forest in many regions, but also many misconceptions about the causes and sources of thisexploitation. The Economics of the Tropical Timber Trade provides a detailed analysis of the economic linkages between the trade and forest degradation. Based on a report prepared for the ITTO, it looks at current and future market conditions and assesses the impacts on tropical forests of both the international timber trade and domestic demand. The authors examine the causes of deforestation and compare the environmental impacts of the timber trade with other factors, such as the conversion of the forest to agriculture. Finally, they assess the national and international trade policy options and discuss the potential role that interventions in the international timber trade may have in promoting efficient and sustainable use of forest resources. This book is of interest to those concerned with forest management and policy, trade and environment, and with the economics of conservation and resource use.

Book The Economics of Forestry

Download or read book The Economics of Forestry written by Erhun Kula and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The economics of forestry has always fascinated me as one of the most brain-taxing cases in economics. As an investment forestry is different from many other projects as it has unusually long gestation periods. For example, in the United Kingdom it takes over 40 years to grow coniferous and over 100 years for deciduous timber. These long gestation periods make it very clear how import ant are the magnitude of the discount rate and the method of discounting in the evaluation of investment projects. Any errors in these will misguide investors in forestry one way or the other. In addition, forestry redistributes income between gener ations. Its long gestation periods make it obvious that more than one generation will be involved in any venture. When we plant trees we know that the bulk of the benefits will be captured by future generations. Conversely, when we fell trees we reap the benefit of projects which were established in the past, mostly by generations who are long gone. So far most economists have devoted their time and energy to analysing income distribution in an intragenerational context, and this is a very sensitive and controversial issue. After all, most revolutions have taken place because of the uneven income distribution which was oppressive for the majority. Forestry helps us to study the case from the viewpoint of different generations. Forestry necessitates estimating timber prices a long time ahead.

Book Assessing Economic Tradeoffs in Forest Management

Download or read book Assessing Economic Tradeoffs in Forest Management written by Ernie Niemi and published by . This book was released on 1997-06-01 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Describes a method for assessing the competing demands of forest resources in a forest management plan by addressing economics values, economic impacts, and perceptions of fairness around each demand. Economic trends and forces that shape the dynamic ecosystem-economy relation are developed. The method is demonstrated through an illustrative analysis of a forest-management decision in the southern Appalachian Mountains. This report provides a technically sound, but readily understandable, method for assessing the full range of economic consequences that accompanies forest-management decisions. Also includes a 32-page report, "Role of Nonmarket Economic Values in Benefit-Cost Analysis of Public Forest Management."
