Book Economic Evaluation of the MIT Process for Manufacture of Ethanol

Download or read book Economic Evaluation of the MIT Process for Manufacture of Ethanol written by and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report summarizes the results of an economic evaluation of the MIT process for the manufacture of ethanol from cellulosic residues. Conceptual process designs were developed for two cases, Case A which is based on the experimental data obtained to date, and Case B which hypothesizes the suppression of acid byproducts. Manufacturing costs, including profit, were estimated at $12.20/million Btu for Case A and $9.40/million Btu for Case B. These are equivalent to about $1.05 and $0.80/gal ethanol respectively. These economic estimates may be slightly on the low side since they do not consider feedstock storage nor working capital requirements. Nevertheless, the manufacturing costs for Case A appear to be comparable to those of the manufacture of ethanol from corn. The plant size used for this analysis was 1500 ton/day corn stover. This is considered to be a realistic size. The conceptual plants make about 27 million gal/yr ethanol in Case A and 41 million gal/yr in Case B. The MIT process appears to be one of the more promising programs being developed under contract for DOE. It is recommended that the process research be continued. Three areas of concern were identified which must be investigated before the process can be commercialized. First, a satisfactory means of storage of corn stover and other agricultural residues must be developed. Second, a method to sterilize corn stover must be developed or it must be demonstrated that the MIT process can run continuously for extended periods with stover that has been sterilized. Third, research must be done to demonstrate the recycle and reuse of process water.

Book Annual Reports on Fermentation Processes

Download or read book Annual Reports on Fermentation Processes written by George T. Tsao and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-12-01 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Annual Reports on Fermentation Processes, Volume 4 considers the significant developments concerning fermentation processes. This book discusses the practical mixed culture processes, microbial fermentation or use of sugar from food wastes, and microbial ecology and physiology of lignin degradation. The immobilized cells for a single enzyme reaction, antibiotics affecting membrane permeability, and direct microbiological conversion of cellulosics to ethanol are also elaborated. This text likewise covers the application of genetics to the fermentation industry and large-scale production of crude interferon. Other topics include the improvement of alcohol production by recombinant DNA techniques and evaluation of N2 fixation and H2 production in fermentation culture. This volume is recommended for students and researchers conducting work on fermentation research and developments.

Book Technology Economics Ethylene Production Via Ethanol Dehydration

Download or read book Technology Economics Ethylene Production Via Ethanol Dehydration written by Intratec and published by Intratec Solutions. This book was released on 2013-07-04 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ethylene is most frequently produced from petroleum-based feedstock. However, rising oil prices coupled with global concerns about sustainability and global warming have motivated research into ethylene manufacture from renewable sources. Fermentation-derived ethanol has been increasingly used as raw material for renewable ethylene production, presenting the primary advantage of being made from CO2 removed from the atmosphere. The technical aspects of a process to produce ethylene via ethanol dehydration are reviewed, as well as the key economic parameters for the profitability of an ethanol dehydration plant. This study follows the same pattern as all Technology Economics studies developed by Intratec. About Technology Economics Technology Economics studies are advisory services ordered by leading chemical companies, which are disclosed to public if they allow so. All Technology Economics studies are based on the same rigorous methodology and well-defined structure, encompassing: Process flow diagrams and material balances Raw material and utility consumptions Major equipment sizing Inside and outside battery limits capital costs Detailed fixed and variable manufacturing expenses

Book Progress in Biomass Conversion

Download or read book Progress in Biomass Conversion written by Kyosti V. Sarkanen and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Progress in Biomass Conversion, Volume 2, provides an overview of the state of knowledge and development in the biomass energy and chemicals field. The current cornerstone of biomass fuel utilization is wood. This form of biomass is storable ""on the stump"", and it can be harvested without any particular regard to season. Further, it is the basic raw material for the vast, essential forest products industry that produces lumber, plywood, pulp and paper, particleboard, and numerous other products. The book opens with an assessment of the energy potential of logging residue. This is followed by separate chapters on the use of genetics to improve forest trees for biomass production; total wood fuels consumption in 1978; and sugar stalk crops as potential sources of fuels and chemicals. Subsequent chapters deal with the organosolv delignification process for ""total biomass utilization""; environmental impact of wood fuel; and the sources and preparation of wood fuel.
