Book Engineering Economics and Fisheries Management

Download or read book Engineering Economics and Fisheries Management written by G. C. Eddie and published by Wiley-Blackwell. This book was released on 1983 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author of this book is a practical engineer with considerable experience in technical development for the fishing industry and he has advised international bodies on subjects as diverse as fisheries administration and the harvesting of krill. Because of his inquiring mind, this analysis of the relationship between engineering, economics, and fisheries management will be thought–provoking to all in the industry. From his wide experience he realizes that in fisheries management, many aspects are easily overlooked because of their familiarity and that there are economic and practical constraints on technical development which are not fully appreciated. Focussing on them should ensure that they are taken into account in future. Rather than provide answers to the industry′s differing problems, he outlines the historical background and gives specific examples from his world–wide experience, posing questions to stimulate constructive discussions. This book has been published on behalf of the Buckland Foundation.

Book Economics of Fisheries Development

Download or read book Economics of Fisheries Development written by Rowena M. Lawson and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2013-11-07 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following the introduction of the 200-mile extended economic zone (EEZ), many developing countries suddenly found they had large fish resources, which – wisely managed and exploited – could generate wealth and income of immense benefit. However, one constraint to this was that many countries, for historic reasons, lacked the expertise to manage fisheries on this scale. Despite the need for information, few economists and especially development economists teaching in universities and colleges were able to incorporate fisheries economics into their courses owing to the lack of readily accessible material. As a result, many rising economists were failing to recognize the global importance of fishers as an economic resource capable of generating substantial wealth and income to many countries. Economics of Fisheries Development provides an accessible exploration of this area of economics, introducing development economists to some of the problems of developing fisheries in areas of the world where fisheries now present great growth prospects. The case studies used throughout the book are nearly entirely drawn from developing countries.

Book The Economics and Management of World Fisheries

Download or read book The Economics and Management of World Fisheries written by Trond Bjørndal and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2012-10-25 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past several decades there has been increasing interest in, and concern about, the economics of the world's capture fishery resources. Massive amounts of resource rent are being lost because of inadequate management and major rebuilding of fishery resources is called for. This book draws together the latest economic theory of the management of these resources, at both the national and the international levels, and highlights areas where further research is urgently required. The emphasis is on world capture fisheries, rather than fisheries of specific regions, and examples are drawn upon from both developed and developing countries. It combines economic theory and empirical testing with an examination and analysis of resource policy options, with particular emphasis on fisheries management polices at the international level, where some of the most difficult resource management problems are found. The authors maintain that capture fishery resources are properly viewed as a part of society's portfolio of natural capital assets. Consequently, a central theme of the book is that managing such resources should be viewed as asset management through time. Written by two leading authorities, this accessible textbook has been specially developed to meet the needs of students taking courses on fisheries management as well as professionals working in this area for governments and international organisations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fisheries resources are an important component of natural resources. It is an important source of high-quality animal protein and food for humans, which provides employment, economic benefits and social welfare for people engaged in fishing activities. It also has played an important role in food safety, economic development, and foreign trade. Fisheries resources economics is an important branch of both applied economics and resource economics. Its research object is fishery resources and its economic problems. The economics of fishery resources is to focus on the relationship between the demand for human economic activities and the supply of fishery resources, as well as between fishery resources and its development. This book expounds the reasons for the economic problems of fishery resources and the theoretical principles for solving them, so as to reveal the objective rules of the allocation of fishery resources in different regions and at different times, to coordinate the relationship between the utilization of fishery resources and economic development, and to realize the sustainable development of fishery economy. This book will also provide learning materials for undergraduates, graduate students and practitioners engaged in fishery resources development and scientific management.

Book The Economics of Fishing

Download or read book The Economics of Fishing written by Rögnvaldur Hannesson and published by Economics of Big Business. This book was released on 2021 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fishing industry's critical dependence on the natural environment makes it very different from other economic sectors. The industry comprises everything from operator-owned small boats to large corporations operating fleets of high-tech trawlers or purse seiners processing their catches into finished products. All however exploit a common resource. This book provides an introduction to the economics of the fishing industry and the role of fisheries in the world economy. It focuses primarily on capture fisheries, although the discussion brings in wider acquaculture for comparative analysis. Trade in fish products and how it has developed is highlighted, as well as the main rules governing the fish trade. The basic concept of sustainable yield is explained and how economically optimal exploitation is used to avoid overexploitation. The book discusses the variability of fish stocks and uses case studies of some spectacular stock crashes that have occurred. The law of the sea is explained and how the movement of fish stocks across ocean boundaries has meant the development of government and inter-governmental bodies to manage international fisheries. At the heart of this management lies the quota system and the book outlines how it works and how, controversially, such quotas have become transferable and have acquired elements of private ownership. The regulation of the fishing industry is shown to be fundamental to prevent the possible total depletion of fish stocks, yet political pressure from the industry and from pressure groups can make the industry less efficient than it could be. Wider questions about whether fisheries management should only be about food production are also considered. The book offers readers a comprehensive and rigorous guide to the economic considerations motivating the industry and highlights the environmental challenges facing the sector as global consumption of fish continues to rise.

Book Game Theory and Fisheries

Download or read book Game Theory and Fisheries written by Ussif Rashid Sumaila and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-08-22 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today, there is a growing sense of urgency among fisheries scientists regarding the management of fish stocks, particularly among those who predict the imminent collapse of the fishing industry due to stock depletion. This book takes a game theoretic approach to discussing potential solutions to the problem of fish stock depletion. Acknowledging the classification of fish stocks as destructible renewable resources, these essays are concerned with the question of how much of the stock should be consumed today and how much should be left in place for the future. The book targets both economists and students of economics who are familiar with the tools of their trade but not necessarily familiar with game theory in the context of fisheries management. Importantly, the goal is not to give a summary evaluation of the current views of the ‘appropriate’ response to immediate policy questions, but rather to describe the ways in which the problems at hand can be productively formulated and approached using game theory and couched on real world fisheries. Game Theory and Fisheries consists of twelve previously published but updated articles in fisheries management, a number of which address a gap in the fisheries literature by modelling and analysing the exploitation of fishery resources in a two-agent fishery, in both cooperative and non-cooperative environments. The author’s work ultimately illustrates that the analysis of strategic interaction between those with access to shared fishery resources will be incomplete without the use of game theory.
