Book excerpt: Taiwan has been depicted as an island facing the incessant threat of forcible unification with the People’s Republic of China. Why, then, has Taiwan spent more than three decades pouring capital and talent into China? In award-winning Rival Partners, Wu Jieh-min follows the development of Taiwanese enterprises in China over twenty-five years and provides fresh insights. The geopolitical shift in Asia beginning in the 1970s and the global restructuring of value chains since the 1980s created strong incentives for Taiwanese entrepreneurs to rush into China despite high political risks and insecure property rights. Taiwanese investment, in conjunction with Hong Kong capital, laid the foundation for the world’s factory to flourish in the southern province of Guangdong, but official Chinese narratives play down Taiwan’s vital contribution. It is hard to imagine the Guangdong model without Taiwanese investment, and, without the Guangdong model, China’s rise could not have occurred. Going beyond the received wisdom of the “China miracle” and “Taiwan factor,” Wu delineates how Taiwanese business people, with the cooperation of local officials, ushered global capitalism into China. By partnering with its political archrival, Taiwan has benefited enormously, while helping to cultivate an economic superpower that increasingly exerts its influence around the world.

  • Pages : 562 pages

Download or read book Guangdong written by Yue-man Yeung and published by Chinese University Press. This book was released on 1998 with total page 562 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Guangdong, capitalizing on its traditional role as China's gateway to the outside world and its proximity to Hong Kong and Macau, has witnessed momentous and fundamental changes since 1978. The province has raced ahead in rapid economic development and physical transformation, reaping the largest dividends in China's open policy and economic reforms. So rapidly has Guangdong developed during the last decade that it has set for itself the target of becoming another little dragon of Asia. This volume addresses the processes, outcomes and meanings of the rapidity of physical and socioeconomic transformation in Guangdong across a wide spectrum of subjects. Undertaken almost exclusively by academics in Hong Kong, this book-length study of Guangdong is a major contribution in our quest for a better understanding of China's modernization and development programmes through its multifaceted experimentation in the southerly province.

Book The China Circle

Download or read book The China Circle written by Barry Naughton and published by Brookings Institution Press. This book was released on 2012-01-01 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the British relinquish control of Hong Kong, the economic relationship among the People's Republic of China (PRC), Taiwan, and Hong Kong becomes especially significant. Despite political and diplomatic tensions, this relationship has grown phenomenally in recent years and continues to prosper. Known as the "China Circle," it is an important emerging economic region that cuts across political boundaries. This book is the first comprehensive study of the underlying economic dynamics that make the China Circle not only possible, but hugely successful. Yun-wing Sung, Barry Naughton, and Kong Yam Tan analyze the macroeconomic issues in each of the political entities that make up the China Circle. Michael Borrus, Chin Chung, Jean François Huchet, and Dieter Ernst focus one of the region's leading industries, electronics. With rapid changes in technology, firm strategy, and global markets driving its continuous restructuring, the electronics industry offers a detailed view of the factors that are shaping the region as a whole. To provide a complete economic picture of the China Circle today—and possible future developments—the contributors explore key issues including emerging divisions of labor, developing trade and investment patterns, and the effect of Hong Kong's return to China in July 1997. Written in an open and accessible style, the book is especially timely and more in-depth than anything currently available.

Book Economic Convergence in Greater China

Download or read book Economic Convergence in Greater China written by Chun Kwok Lei and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2008-12-08 with total page 407 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although China's economy has grown very rapidly in recent decades, there are still very large differences between the economy of mainland China and the economies of Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan. For example, per capita income in Hong Kong is many, many times higher than per capita income in mainland China. This book considers the degree to which economic convergence between mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan has occurred, and the prospects for increased convergence in the future. It considers economic integration between China and its two Special Administrative Regions (SARS), emphasising the large volume of capital flows and exports, especially from Hong Kong into China, and showing that the economies are highly integrated, despites their differences. It examines income convergence, and changes in productivity, using the same measures for both China and the two SARS, unlike most existing studies. It explores how economic reforms have been crucial to increasing convergence so far, and will continue to be in the future, and concludes by discussing the implications for policy of encouraging increased convergence.

  • Pages : 556 pages

Download or read book China written by Gungwu Wang and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2013 with total page 556 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: China has achieved significant socio-economic progress and has become a key player on the international stage after several decades of open-door and reform policy. Looking beyond China's transformation, this book focusses on the theme of governance which is widely regarded as the next most critical element to ensure that China's growth remains sustainable.Today, China is confronted with a host of pressing challenges that call for urgent attention. These include the need to rebalance and restructure the economy, the widening income gaps, the poor integration of migrant populations in the urban areas, insufficient public housing and healthcare coverage, the seeming lack of political reforms and the degree of environmental degradation. In the foreign policy arena, China is likewise under pressure to do more to address global concerns while not appearing to be overly aggressive. The next steps that China takes would have a great deal to do with governance, in terms of how it tackles or fails to address the myriad of challenges, both domestic and foreign.China: Development and Governance, with 57 short chapters in total, is based on up-to-date scholarly research written in a readable and concise style. Besides China's domestic developments, it also covers China's external relations with the United States, Japan, Korea and Taiwan. Non-specialists, in particular, should find this volume accessible and useful in keeping up with fast-changing developments in East Asia.
