Book Economic Consequences of Lower Military Spending

Download or read book Economic Consequences of Lower Military Spending written by Tamim A. Bayoumi and published by . This book was released on 1993-03 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The IMF MULTIMOD model is used to trace the economic impact of a 20 percent reduction in world military expenditures. GDP falls in the short run, however private consumption and investment rise, leading to an increase in GDP in the medium and long run. The estimated gains to economic welfare are substantial, particularly for developing countries, although most of these gains are realized in the long run. A positive international economic externality is found to exist, implying that for any given country the economic gains from a coordinated reduction in military expenditures exceed the gains from a unilateral reduction.

Book The Impact of Worldwide Military Spending Cutson Developing Countries

Download or read book The Impact of Worldwide Military Spending Cutson Developing Countries written by Mr.Tamim Bayoumi and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 1993-11-01 with total page 39 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper investigates the economic impact of a coordinated reduction in military expenditures of 20 percent using a specially modified version of the MULTIMOD world economic model. Simulation results indicate that in developing countries the present value of consumption increases by 46 percent of 1992 GDP, compared to military expenditures cuts, in present value terms, of 33 percent of 1992 GDP. The gains reflect both the release of domestic resources and a positive international economic externality due to enhanced trade and lower world interest rates. Accordingly, the net debtor developing country gains exceed those of industrial countries. Examination of individual developing country economies confirms the significance of the external trade effect on the pattern and level of gains.

Book The Peace Dividend

Download or read book The Peace Dividend written by Delano Villanueva and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 1995-05-01 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although conventional wisdom suggests that reducing military spending may improve a country’s economic growth performance, empirical studies have produced ambiguous results. This paper extends a standard growth model and estimates it using techniques that exploit both cross-section and time-series dimensions of available data to obtain consistent estimates of the growth-retarding effects of military spending via its adverse impact on capital formation and resource allocation. Model simulations suggest that a substantial long-run “Peace Dividend”--in the form of higher capacity output--may result from: (i) markedly lower military expenditure levels achieved in most regions during the late 1980s; and (ii) further military spending cuts that would be possible in the future if a global peace could be secured.

Book Military Expansion Economic Decline

Download or read book Military Expansion Economic Decline written by R.W. DeGrasse and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-07-01 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By assessing the costs and benefits of military spending, the authors provide a "second opinion" on the subject of military economics. While advocates of increased military spending often stress the positive effects of the Pentagon on the economy, there has been little systematic summary of the "opportunity costs" that society pays for a large military establishment. This book fills that gap.

Book Defense Spending And Economic Growth

Download or read book Defense Spending And Economic Growth written by James E. Payne and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-03-13 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the impact defense spending has on economic growth. While defense spending was not deliberately invented as a fiscal policy instrument, its importance in the composition of overall government spending and thus in determining employment is now easily recognized. In light of the collapse of the Soviet Union and the consequent reduction in the threat to the security of the United States, maintaining defense spending at the old level seems indefensible. The media has concentrated on the so-called peace dividend. However, as soon as the federal government is faced with defense cuts, it realizes the macroeconomic ramifications of such a step. Based on studies included in this volume, we examine the effects of defense spending on economic growth and investigate how the changed world political climate is likely to alter the importance and pattern of defense spending both for developed and developing countries.

Book The Peace Dividend Military Spending Cuts and Economic Growth

Download or read book The Peace Dividend Military Spending Cuts and Economic Growth written by Norman Loayza and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: February 1996 Empirical results suggest that lower military spending in the late 1980s -- plus further cuts in military spending should global peace be secured -- could produce a substantial long-term peace dividend in higher capacity output. Conventional wisdom suggests that reducing military spending may improve a country's economic growth, but empirical studies have produced ambiguous results on this point. Extending a standard growth model, Knight, Loayza, and Villanueva exploit both cross-section and time-series dimensions of available data to get consistent estimates of the growth-retarding effects of military spending. Military spending is growth-retarding because of its adverse impact on capital formation and resource allocation. Model simulation results suggest a substantial long-term peace dividend -- in the form of higher capacity output per capita -- that may result from (1) markedly lower military spending in most regions in the late 1980s and (2) future cuts in military spending if global peace is secured. This paper -- a joint product of the Macroeconomics and Growth Division, Policy Research Department, and the International Monetary Fund -- is part of a larger effort to understand the link between policies and growth.
