Book U S Economic Assistance for Israel

Download or read book U S Economic Assistance for Israel written by United States. General Accounting Office and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: U.S. support for Israel's political and economic stability has been expressed through a variety of economic and military aid programs. The Security Supporting Assistance Program, involving a Commodity Import Program (CIP) and cash grants, is the primary economic aid program for Israel. This aid is usually justified for political rather than solely economic reasons. Under CIP, the United States reimburses Israel for commercial and government purchases from U.S. suppliers, excluding purchases for military use or for sale in occupied territories. This eased Israel's balance-of-payments deficits. The cash grant is called "untied aid" because the funds do not have to be spent on purchases in the United States. Funds are to be spend on nonmilitary commodities in nonoccupied areas.

Book The Politics of Foreign Aid

Download or read book The Politics of Foreign Aid written by Muḥammad Rabīʻ and published by Praeger. This book was released on 1988-12-14 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: United States aid to Israel averages a staggering $21 billion per year. Yet, as this insightful volume explains, that aid has failed to serve both U.S. and Israeli interests. The Politics of Foreign Aid discusses how the appropriation of foreign aid is often controlled by lobbyists and U.S. domestic concerns rather than by Israeli needs. This clear and thorough examination begins with a description of the objectives, major programs, and historical background of U.S. aid to Israel--military aid, economic aid, and private grants and subsidies. The final section analyzes the effect that foregin aid has had on Israel and predicts the role that aid will play in Israel's future. Finally, Rabie provides suggestions about how to change the role of lobbyists in influencing foreign policy.

Book The Israeli Economy

Download or read book The Israeli Economy written by Joseph Zeira and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2021-11-23 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An authoritative economic history of Israel from its founding to the present In 1922, there were ninety thousand Jews in Palestine, a small country in a poor and volatile region. Today, Israel has a population of nine million and is one of the richest countries in the world. The Israeli Economy tells the story of this remarkable transformation, shedding critical new light on Israel's rapid economic growth. Joseph Zeira takes readers from those early days to today, describing how Israel's economic development occurred amid intense fighting with the Palestinians and neighboring Arab countries. He reveals how the new state's astonishing growth continued into the early 1970s, and traces this growth to public investment in education and to large foreign transfers. Zeira analyzes the costs of the Arab-Israeli conflict, demonstrating how economic output could be vastly greater with a comprehensive peace. He discusses how Israel went through intensive neoliberal economic policies in recent decades, and shows how these policies not only failed to enhance economic performance, but led to significant social inequality. Based on more than two decades of groundbreaking research, The Israeli Economy is an in-depth survey of a modern economy that has experienced rapid growth, wars, immigration waves, and other significant shocks. It thus offers important lessons for nations around the world.

Book The Israeli Economy from the Foundation of the State through the 21st Century

This book was released on 2010-11-15 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyzes the development of the Israeli economy in its historical context. It shows how the ideology of the dominant group in the Zionist movement led to the development of agriculture, thus meeting the preconditions for successful industrialization. Remarkable, if uneven, growth has taken place, with increasing allocations for defense. Regional isolation led to the emphasis on high-quality exports for developed markets that has stimulated the technological base. Israel has benefited from mass immigration and increased access to foreign capital, factors that have transformed the economy. The book includes chapters on the development of the Jewish community in Palestine during the British Mandate; macroeconomic developments and economic policy; globalization and high technology; defense; the economics of the Arab minority; Israeli settlements and relations with the Palestinians; and the role of religion. It concludes with an examination of the socioeconomic divisions that have widened as the economy has grown.

Book Start up Nation

Download or read book Start up Nation written by Dan Senor and published by Twelve. This book was released on 2011-09-07 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What the world can learn from Israel's meteoric economic success. Start-Up Nation addresses the trillion dollar question: How is it that Israel -- a country of 7.1 million, only 60 years old, surrounded by enemies, in a constant state of war since its founding, with no natural resources-- produces more start-up companies than large, peaceful, and stable nations like Japan, China, India, Korea, Canada and the UK? With the savvy of foreign policy insiders, Senor and Singer examine the lessons of the country's adversity-driven culture, which flattens hierarchy and elevates informality-- all backed up by government policies focused on innovation. In a world where economies as diverse as Ireland, Singapore and Dubai have tried to re-create the "Israel effect", there are entrepreneurial lessons well worth noting. As America reboots its own economy and can-do spirit, there's never been a better time to look at this remarkable and resilient nation for some impressive, surprising clues.
