Book Labour Market Economics Routledge Revivals

Download or read book Labour Market Economics Routledge Revivals written by D Sapsford and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1981, Labour Market Economics develops the basic economic theory of introductory courses within the context of labour market analysis and applies it both to particular features and special problems of the subject. The author begins by outlining the nature of the area and the structure of the UK labour market at the time, and proceeds to explain and elaborate the tools of theoretical analysis. These are then applied in subsequent chapters to a variety of issues, including the economic analysis of trade unions, collective bargaining and the effects of unions, unemployment, wage inflation and the inequality of pay. Throughout the book, emphasis is placed on the economic theory of the labour market and the role of empirical work in testing its predictions, and wherever available, evidence from studies of the UK labour markets is cited.

Book Work Women and the Labour Market

Download or read book Work Women and the Labour Market written by Jackie West and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-08-24 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1982, Work, Women and the Labour Market presents through original articles a coherent overall picture of women’s employment in contemporary British capitalism. For the first time it brings together concrete studies which show graphically how women’s unequal position at work is shaped by the capital-labour relation and by women’s place as housewives and mothers. The book illuminates the differences and similarities in women’s and men’s experience in the labour market and as members of the working class. It is about how and why women come to be in jobs typically regarded as semi or unskilled, about the causes of low pay, and about women workers’ consciousness as workers and as women. It looks at the role of trade unions in relation to women and to sexual divisions, and at how class and gender relations are woven together in the production process. The nine closely researched contributions examine the development of women’s and men’s work in clothing and other manufacturing industries, clerical work in local government, microelectronics in the office, the position of Asian and West Indian women in the labour market, women’s role in the family and part-time work, and women’s involvement and influence in trade unions.

Book Sustainable Urban Neighbourhood

Download or read book Sustainable Urban Neighbourhood written by David Rudlin and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2010-05-14 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This successful title, previously known as 'Building the 21st Century Home' and now in its second edition, explores and explains the trends and issues that underlie the renaissance of UK towns and cities and describes the sustainable urban neighbourhood as a model for rebuilding urban areas. The book reviews the way that planning policies, architectural trends and economic forces have undermined the viability of urban areas in Britain since the Industrial Revolution. Now that much post-war planning philosophy is being discredited we are left with few urban models other than garden city inspired suburbia. Are these appropriate in the 21st century given environmental concerns, demographic change, social and economic pressures? The authors suggest that these trends point to a very different urban future. The authors argue that we must reform our towns and cities so that they become attractive, humane places where people will choose to live. The Sustainable Urban Neighbourhood is a model for such reform and the book describes what this would look like and how it might be brought about.

Book Social Enterprise in Latin America

Download or read book Social Enterprise in Latin America written by Luiz Inácio Gaiger and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-05-22 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the absence of a widely accepted and common definition of social enterprise (SE), a large research project, the "International Comparative Social Enterprise Models" (ICSEM) Project, was carried out over a five-year period; it involved more than 200 researchers from 55 countries and relied on bottom-up approaches to capture the SE phenomenon. This strategy made it possible to take into account and give legitimacy to locally embedded approaches, thus resulting in an analysis encompassing a wide diversity of social enterprises, while simultaneously allowing for the identification of major SE models to delineate the field on common grounds at the international level. These SE models reveal or confirm an overall trend towards new ways of sharing the responsibility for the common good in today’s economies and societies. We tend to consider as good news the fact that social enterprises actually stem from all parts of the economy. Indeed, societies are facing many complex challenges at all levels, from the local to the global level. The diversity and internal variety of SE models are a sign of a broadly shared willingness to develop appropriate although sometimes embryonic—responses to these challenges, on the basis of innovative economic/business models driven by a social mission. In spite of their weaknesses, social enterprises may be seen as advocates for and vehicles of the general interest across the whole economy. Of course, the debate about privatisation, deregulation and globalised market competition—all factors that may hinder efforts in the search for the common good–has to be addressed as well. The second of a series of four ICSEM books, Social Enterprise in Latin America will serve as a key reference and resource for teachers, researchers, students, experts, policy makers, journalists and other categories of people who want to acquire a broad understanding of the phenomena of social enterprise and social entrepreneurship as they emerge and develop across the world.
