Book Econometric Models of Manitoba Crop Acreage Demand and Yield Response Under Risk and Uncertainty

Download or read book Econometric Models of Manitoba Crop Acreage Demand and Yield Response Under Risk and Uncertainty written by Atikarn Mundang and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this research is to estimate econometric models of crop supply response for Manitoba using data aggregated at the provincial level for 1960-1987. In contrast to most other studies, this research (a) decomposes crop supply response to price into the acreage and yield components which are estmimated separately and (b) estimates duality models incorporated risk aversion. First, ad hoc static and distriubted lag models of crop yield response to expected price and price variance for crops were estimated. In static models expected price was insignificant and price variance was often significant. In contrast a distributed lag in expected prices was often significant in risk-neutral models, and distributed lags in expected prices and price variance were generally significant. Second, static duality models of crop acreage allocations were estimated. Models with yields (or the distribution of yields) predetermined relative to acreage decisions were emphaized. Results generally indicated that both mean and variance of revenues per acre (or of crop prices) were significant allowing for risk aversion and uncertainty of either (but not both) crop prices or crop yields. Third, dynamic duality models of crop yields were formulated assuming adjustment costs for crop yields as well as for capital investment, nonstatic expectations for prices and crop acreages, risk aversion and price uncertainty (risk is modelled as timeless rather than as temporal). Preliminary results indicate that price variance and lags in adjustment are significant in crop yield equations, as in the earlier ad hoc distributed lag models.

Book Bio Economic Models applied to Agricultural Systems

Download or read book Bio Economic Models applied to Agricultural Systems written by Guillermo Flichman and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-09-15 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book has the purpose of providing the "state of the arts" concerning bio-economic modelling dealing with agricultural systems. In most cases, the contributions use a methodology combining the use of biophysical and economic models, in all cases, an engineering production function approach is totally or partially applied. This practice is being developed in the last years as a response to concrete policy matters: agricultural policies are increasingly combined with environmental and natural resources policies, and this reality involves the need of an integrated assessment, that current economic models are not able to provide.

Book Econometric Models of Western Canada Crop Acreage Demand and Yield Response Under Risk and Uncertainty

Download or read book Econometric Models of Western Canada Crop Acreage Demand and Yield Response Under Risk and Uncertainty written by and published by . This book was released on 1910 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study has modelled an alternative approach to systems of supply response by decomposing it into acreage and yield responses for Western Canada grains, using aggregate data across provinces for 1961-1995. This study follows a similar study for Manitoba by Mundang (1996). Acreage demands are estimated by employing duality models and allowing risk aversion. Econometric results are presented for a four-crop model using level and first differenced data. Estimates for models incorporating risk aversion generally have more significant coefficients for expected revenues or expected prices (under price uncertainty). Results for models assuming yield uncertainty and nonlinear estimations are less satisfactory than in earlier studies. This may be due to difficulties in consistent aggregation across provinces and that the model does not capture changes in agricultural policies that may influence acreage demand decisions. The yield responses to price are specified assuming price uncertainty, risk aversion, and distributed lags. Under static models, the expected price coefficients are always insignificant, however, price variances are often significant (wheat). In contrast, under distributed lag models, both expected prices and price variances are often significant. This results suggest that it is important to incorporate risk aversion and dynamics into crop yield response models. For further research, it would be interesting to specify a model for each province and to incorporate changes in agricultural policies more explicitly into the model.

Book The Reality for Agricultural Economics Within the European Union

Download or read book The Reality for Agricultural Economics Within the European Union written by Vítor João Pereira Domingues Martinho and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-08-21 with total page 101 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of this study is to analyze several dimensions of the agricultural economics reality for the representative farms of the European Union countries by using microeconomic data available in the Farm Accountancy Data Network from 1989-2009. To support this research, several ratios and efficiency indicators were calculated across several variables relative, namely, to the agricultural output and the utilized agricultural area. These ratios and indicators were analyzed further through econometric models associated with the convergence approaches, presenting with more detail the Portuguese case. Furthermore, it is important to design a set of strategies that are more suited to the European Union realities.

Book Sustaining Future Food Security in Changing Environments

Download or read book Sustaining Future Food Security in Changing Environments written by Divya Pandey and published by Nova Science Publishers. This book was released on 2016 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Access to adequate food and nutrition is a fundamental human right. However, a significant population worldwide presently suffers from malnutrition and inadequate access to food. To meet the goal of zero hunger and malnutrition, agricultural production must maintain pace with increasing food demand. This goal is being challenged by rapidly changing socio-economic and environmental issues. Climate change, depleting soil and water resources, air, water and soil pollution are not only reducing productivity, but also pose a threat to food safety and nutrition. This book analyzes linkages between agriculture and environmental changes, major challenges and potential solutions to secure future food security. It covers, in detail, the impacts of major environmental changes including climate change and air pollution on crops and agricultural production. The potential solutions to address these challenges are also discussed. This book provides the reader with a broad view of interactions between agriculture and the environment, where agriculture is not only vulnerable but also acts as a contributor and offers mitigation options for some of the challenges in sustaining future food security. Agricultural sustainability in near and long-term future will depend on adapting crops and crop management practices based on emerging scientific knowledge of plant physiology and resource efficient technologies combined with focused socio-economic reforms to conserve food diversity and traditional practices. With the help of specific case studies, this book also highlights the significance of reforming small scale farming practices. Overall, this book provides the core idea of sustainable agriculture and food production in current and future scenarios, and is recommended for anyone interested in this topic.

Book A Disequilibrium Macroeconometric Model for the Indian Economy

Download or read book A Disequilibrium Macroeconometric Model for the Indian Economy written by Kaliappa Kalirajan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-12 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title was first published in 2003. This text presents a new approach to incorporating regional details on production in a disequilibrium macroeconometric model. The early studies on disequilibrium dealt with either partial-adjustment models or models involving excess demand or supplies in markets. In this study the authors consider a different type of disequilibrium model - one in which econometric analysis makes use of the varying coefficients stochastic production frontier approach, which permits estimation and analysis of production efficiencies of individual producers. The book also presents an innovative approach to production modelling in macro econometric models as it provides a useful framework for incorporating production efficiencies and regional details of production in the macro models. It is a pioneering study that combines the stochastic frontier approach with macro econometric modelling. Primarily focused on India, it also provides insights into problems in modelling economies of other developing countries.

Book Handbook Of Climate Change And Agroecosystems The Agricultural Model Intercomparison And Improvement Project Agmip Integrated Crop And Economic Assessments Joint Publication With Asa Cssa And Sssa In 2 Parts

This book was released on 2015-02-13 with total page 1159 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Top agricultural scientists from around the world have taken up the challenge of sustainable agriculture, with the specific focus on integrating agronomic, climatological, biophysical and socio-economic perspectives and processes. Every chapter (of the Handbook) contributes to addressing the growing food-security challenges facing the world.”Foreword by Jeffrey Sachs, Director of the Earth Institute at Columbia UniversityClimate effects on agriculture are of increasing concern in both the scientific and policy communities because of the growing population and the greater uncertainty in the weather during growing seasons. Changes in production are directly linked to variations in temperature and precipitation during the growing season and often to the offseason changes in weather because of soil water storage to replenish the soil profile. This is not an isolated problem but one of worldwide interest because each country has concerns about their food security. The Agricultural Model Intercomparison and Improvement Project (AgMIP) was developed to evaluate agricultural models and intercompare their ability to predict climate impacts. In sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia, South America and East Asia, AgMIP regional research teams (RRTs) are conducting integrated assessments to improve understanding of agricultural impacts of climate change (including biophysical and economic impacts) at national and regional scales. Other AgMIP initiatives include global gridded modeling, data and information technology (IT) tool development, simulation of crop pests and diseases, site-based crop-climate sensitivity studies, and aggregation and scaling.

Book Micro Behavioral Economics of Global Warming

Download or read book Micro Behavioral Economics of Global Warming written by S. Niggol Seo and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-03-30 with total page 107 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a foundation for studying the micro-behavioral economics of global warming. The author develops an empirical model, named the Geographically-scaled Micro econometric model of Adapting Portfolios (G-MAP) in response to climatic changes and risks. The G-MAP model is applied to observed decisions of agricultural and natural resource enterprises in Sub-Saharan Africa and South America. The author describes the five applications of the model: the G-MAP animal species, the G-MAP agricultural systems, the G-MAP natural resource enterprises, the G-MAP climate risk, and the G-MAP public adaptations. The micro-behavioral economics of global warming and the G-MAP models are evaluated against the three alternative modeling traditions: The first is the Agro-Economic Models (AEM) based on crop simulations of selected crops under elevated CO2 conditions; The second is a family of econometric studies of grain yield changes caused by yearly weather fluctuations; The third is the Agro-Ecological Zone (AEZ) method hinged crucially on the AEZ classifications of ecosystems. The author offers a refreshing look at the traditional economics of global warming, unraveling a broad array of adaptation strategies adopted by managers of agricultural and natural resource enterprises in Sub-Saharan Africa and South America. The book demonstrates that the micro-behavioral economics dynamically integrates multiple disciplines in a cohesive way - including economics, psychology, climate science, ecosystem studies, agronomy and animal science - into the decision-making framework of an individual agent. The G-MAP models provide a guide map of adaptation strategies for the humanity’s enduring journey of battling global climatic changes in this century and beyond.
