Book Koala The Extraordinary Life of an Enigmatic Animal

Download or read book Koala The Extraordinary Life of an Enigmatic Animal written by Danielle Clode and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2023-01-17 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A New Scientist Best Popular Science Book of the Year "This is the book I’ve been waiting for." —Sy Montgomery, author of The Soul of an Octopus An Australian biologist delves into the extraordinary world of koalas, from their ancient ancestors to the current threats to their survival. Koalas regularly appeared in Australian biologist Danielle Clode’s backyard, but it was only when a bushfire threatened that she truly paid them attention. She soon realized how much she had to learn about these complex and mysterious animals. In vivid, descriptive prose, Clode embarks on a delightful and surprising journey through evolutionary biology, natural history, and ecology to understand where these enigmatic animals came from and what their future may hold. She begins her search with the fossils of ancient giant koalas, delving into why the modern koala has become the lone survivor of a once-diverse family of uniquely Australian marsupials. Koala investigates the remarkable physiology of these charismatic creatures. Born the size of tiny “jellybeans,” joeys face an uphill battle, from crawling into their mother’s pouch to being weaned onto a toxic diet of gum-tree leaves, the koalas’ single source of food. Clode explores the complex relationship and unexpected connections between this endearing species and humans. She explains how koalas are simultaneously threatened with extinction in some areas due to disease, climate change, and increasing wildfires, while overpopulating forests in other parts of the country. Deeply researched and filled with wonder, Koala is both a tender and inquisitive paean to a species unlike any other and a call to ensure its survival.

Book The Ecology of the Koala Phascolarctos Cinereus in Over browsed Habitats on Kangaroo Island South Australia

Download or read book The Ecology of the Koala Phascolarctos Cinereus in Over browsed Habitats on Kangaroo Island South Australia written by Soolim Carney and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over-abundant koala populations and resultant over-browsing of vegetation has presented an ongoing challenge for wildlife managers in many areas of south-eastern Australia for almost a century. In 1996 over-browsing by koalas became evident in many areas of Kangaroo Island, and in riparian areas where preferred tree species occurred; the majority of food trees were severely defoliated. This project was one of a number of concurrent research projects which focussed on key aspects of koala ecology in order to better inform development of koala management strategies on Kangaroo Island. The main focus of the project was to investigate: koala foraging behaviour; tree response to extent and pattern of defoliation; habitat use and tree preference in preferred and non-preferred habitats; regenerative potential of over-browsed tree species, and effect of sterilisation and translocation of koalas on tree health.

Book excerpt: Adored for its large fluffy ears, spoon-shaped nose and bright button eyes, the koala is universally recognised and revered as an Australian icon. But it hasn't always been so. After coexisting successfully with Aborigines for thousands of years, the koala was considered sloth-like by the early Europeans and valued for little more than its fur, and by the early twentieth century millions of koalas had been hunted, driving the species to near-extinction. Yet the koala is also one of the most well-adapted and resilient of Australia's marsupials, described by some as a triumph of evolution. How does it survive, and thrive even, on such indigestible fare as eucalyptus leaves, laden as they are with enough toxic phenols to kill most other animals? In this fascinating story of the koala, respected biologist and author Stephen Jackson examines not only the ecology, behaviour and history of this extraordinary animal, but also ongoing threats such as disease and habitat loss, and the controversial debate about how to best manage the remaining populations of Australia's favourite marsupial.

Book excerpt: Marsupial Biology developed from contributions commissioned from those attending an international symposium held in honour of Hugh Tyndale Biscoe, Australia's most celebrated marsupial biology authority and co-author of the previous leading marsupial biology text published more than 15 years ago. The book does not comprise papers of narrow focus read at the symposium, but chapters reviewing the knowledge in each key area, written to a book format. It has been tightly edited to ensure a great degree of harmony and is suitable as a comprehensive reference text for graduate and undergraduate students.

Book excerpt: In Medicine of Australian Mammals, more than 30 experts present the most current information available on the medical management of all taxa of Australian native mammals. This comprehensive text is divided into two parts. The first includes chapters on general topics relevant to the medical management of captive and free-ranging Australian native mammals such as: veterinary considerations for the rescue, treatment, rehabilitation and release of wildlife; veterinary aspects of hand-rearing orphaned marsupials; marine mammal strandings and the role of the veterinarian; and wildlife health investigation and necropsy of Australian mammals. The second part covers the medicine of specific taxa of Australian native mammals. Detailed information on taxonomy, distribution, biology, anatomy, physiology, reproduction, husbandry, nutrition, physical and chemical restraint, clinical pathology, hand-rearing, diseases, zoonoses, therapeutics, reproductive management and surgery is included.
