This book was released on 2008 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This technical report provides detailed information that supports the White Pine in the Lake Abitibi and Lake Temagami Ecoregions of Ontario public report that is part of the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources' State of Resources Reporting series. It presents a brief review of the ecology of white pine, with special reference to the Lake Abitibi (3E) and Lake Temagami (4E) ecoregions of northeastern Ontario. As well, it provides a detailed presentation and discussion of provincial data on the current status and management of this resource. An overview of the climate, physiography, geology, soils, ecology, and ecological values associated with white pine forests in this region is followed by a review of the historical social and economic importance of white pine to both the province and the region. The manner in which European settlement and the historical development of Ontario shaped the extent, composition, structure, condition, and management of the white pine resource in the region is discussed. The policies and management practices, as well as challenges to white pine management in these ecoregions are summarized. The report concludes with a discussion of modelling efforts to compare the effects of current selected management scenarios on the future extent of white pine forests and associated wood supply.--Document.

This book was released on 2020-01-08 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book aims to examine the context and practice of national parks regarding a countries obligations to safeguard biodiversity through the protection and management of forest-protected areas. The book examines the wider impacts of national parks within the scope of an integrated environmental hub at the global and regional level and eventually delves into the country case. Three areas are covered: theoretical underpinnings and concepts related to national parks, exploring their various modalities and integrated concerns for the environment; an empirical review in lieu of effective management of protected areas as defined by the World Conservation Union IUCN, addressing the efficient use of human and material resources, including national/agency-protected area regulations and legislation, policies, international conventions and designations, management plans, and/or agreements associated with those areas; and evaluation of challenges underlying a countrys intention to gauge the potential of a national park and pinpoint adequate attention on exploiting new strategies for national park management.

Download or read book The Longleaf Pine Ecosystem written by Shibu Jose and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-05-18 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The longleaf pine ecosystem, once one of the most extensive ecosystems in North America, is now among the most threatened. Over the past few centuries, land clearing, logging, fire suppression, and the encroachment of more aggressive plants have led to an overwhelming decrease in the ecosystem’s size, to approximately 2.2% of its original coverage. Despite this devastation, the range of the longleaf still extends from Virginia to Texas. Through the combined efforts of organizations such as the USDA Forest Service, the Longleaf Alliance, and the Nature Conservancy, extensive programs to conserve, restore, and manage the ecosystem are currently underway. The longleaf pine ecosystem is valued not only for its aesthetic appeal, but also for its outstanding biodiversity, habitat value, and for the quality of the longleaf pine lumber. It has a natural resistance to fire and insects, and supports more than thirty threatened or endangered plant and animal species, including the red-cockaded woodpecker and the gopher tortoise. The Longleaf Pine Ecosystem unites a wealth of current information on the ecology, silviculture, and restoration of this ecosystem. The book also includes a discussion of the significant historical, social, and political aspects of ecosystem management, making it a valuable resource for students, land managers, ecologists, private landowners, government agencies, consultants, and the forest products industry. About the Editors: Dr. Shibu Jose is Associate Professor of Forest Ecology and Dr. Eric J. Jokela is Professor of Silviculture at the School of Forest Resources and Conservation at the University of Florida in Gainesville. Dr. Deborah L. Miller is Associate Professor of Wildlife Ecology in the Department of Wildlife Ecology and Conservation at the University of Florida in Milton.
