Book excerpt: Wildlife biologists often use counts of individual birds attending leks to monitor several grouse species, but we lack a standard method for counting Columbian sharp-tailed grouse (Tympanuchus phasianellus columbianus ; CSTG) on leks. We compared two count methods: aerial infrared (AIR) counts of CSTG on leks and ground-based lek counts. We did not detect a difference in counts between sampling methods on 12 April 2012 because confidence intervals overlapped zero (-0.14 to 2.14). The cost to conduct AIR counts was twice that of ground counts (on a per lek basis), but AIR allowed us to survey more leks in less time. Hence, we believe AIR has potential as a standard lek count method for CSTG. Abundance estimates for CSTG do not include confidence interval estimation. We used statistical population reconstruction (SPR) to estimate the hunted Idaho population of CSTG during 2000--2013. The estimated abundance for Idaho was stable around 37,000 adults (+/- 6,400). Thus, harvest rates of 0.05--0.16 appear appropriate for maintaining populations. SPR is a flexible framework for estimating abundance, but is seldom used by wildlife managers. Workshops, software, or guide books are needed to help managers with model development and mechanics of SPR. Wildlife agencies consider the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) beneficial to CSTG populations but demographic rates in CRP compared to those in shrub-steppe are unknown. We measured CSTG demographic rates in CRP lands from 2011 to 2013 in Idaho. CSTG successfully bred, nested, and reared young in CRP albeit at comparatively lower rates (lambda = 0.77 +/- 0.284) than grouse occupying shrub-steppe (lambda = 1.08 +/- 0.316). CRP aids CSTG conservation in Idaho but population growth in CRP habitats is unlikely. Nest success is a significant life stage influencing populations of CSTG as predation is the primary source of nest failure. We used videography of CSTG nests to describe nest predators and measured wind characteristics with anemometers at nests to test the olfactory concealment theory. American badgers (Taxidea taxus) and coyotes (Canis latrans) caused 75% of nest failures. Wind characteristics at CSTG nest sites did not support predictions of the olfactory concealment theory.

Book excerpt: The ten currently recognized species of grouse in North America have played an important role in America's history, from the famous but ill-fated heath hen, a primary source of meat for the earliest New England immigrants, to the ruffed grouse, currently one of the most abundant and soughtafter upland game birds in more than 40 states and provinces. This book summarizes the ecology, reproductive biology, and social behavior of all ten of the extant North American grouse species. It also describes the current status of grouse populations, some of which are perilously close to extinction. The social behavior of grouse is of special biological interest because among these ten species there is a complete mating system spectrum, from seasonally monogamous pair-bonding to highly promiscuous mating patterns. The latter group illustrates the strong structural and behavioral effects of sexual selection resulting from nonmonogamous mating. These influences reach a peak in the development by some grouse species of engaging in mating "leks," arena-like competitions performed by males while attempting to attract fertile females, and also provide opportunities for females to select optimum mating partners. These sexual competitions also promote strong differences evolving in sexual signaling behaviors ("displays") among closely related species. Nevertheless, a relatively high incidence of mating errors and resulting hybridization often occurs in spite of these marked behavioral differences. In addition to a text of 101,000 words, the book includes 16 range maps, 37 line drawings, and 38 photographs by the author, as well as nearly 1,400 literature citations.

Book excerpt: The Columbian sharp-tailed grouse (Tympanuchus phasianellus columbianus; CSTG) has experienced range-wide population declines, primarily as a result of habitat loss or degradation, and currently occupies30% forb cover at the nesting core use (60 ha) scale. Daily nest survival was positively associated with visual obstruction readings at the nest and the amount of restored grassland habitat containing >30% forb cover at the core use (60 ha) scale. Nest site selection and daily nest survival were not influenced by proximity to turbines or turbine density at the core use or breeding season home range (1385 ha) scales. Early (14-day) brood success was positively influenced by post-hatch precipitation and late (42-day) brood success was positively influenced by earlier hatch dates. Chick survival to 42 days post hatch was positively influenced by post-hatch precipitation and earlier hatch dates and negatively influenced by increasing densities of wind turbines at the breeding season home range scale. The probability of an individual chick surviving to 42 days decreased by 50% when there were 9́Æ10 turbines within 2.1 km of the nest. In restored grassland habitats, such as Conservation Reserve Program fields, I recommend plantings and management practices that will result in diverse, bunchgrass-dominated nesting habitat with residual grass cover and >30% forb canopy cover during the nesting season. My results suggest that wind turbines occurring within 2.1 km of nesting habitats (i.e., 4.8 km of occupied leks) may negatively affect CSTG recruitment.
