Download or read book Ecology and Conservation of Lowland Anoa Bubalus Depressicornis in Sulawesi Indonesia written by Abdul Haris Mustari and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis describes the ecology of lowland anoa in their natural habitat in wildlife reserves in southeast Sulawesi, including their habitat charcateristics, population density, distribution, and resources use, and some aspects of their behaviour and sociality. Dietary ecology was also studied to investigate the food plants eaten by anoas, the proportions of food plants in their diets, seasonal changes in their diets and the availability of the food plants that were potentially eaten. Diets of Rusa deer and the Sulawesi warty pig were also assessed and similiarity and/or dissimiliarity of the forest ungulates' diets compared.

Book Ecology Conservation and Management of Wild Pigs and Peccaries

Download or read book Ecology Conservation and Management of Wild Pigs and Peccaries written by Mario Melletti and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2017-11-23 with total page 1417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wild pigs inhabit vast areas in Europe, Southern Asia and Africa, and have been introduced in North and South America, while feral pigs are widespread in Australia and New Zealand. Many wild pig species are threatened with extinction, but Eurasian wild boar populations, however, are increasing in many regions. Covering all wild pig and peccary species, the Suidae and Tayassuidae families, this comprehensive review presents new information about the evolution, taxonomy and domestication of wild pigs and peccaries alongside novel case studies on conservation activities and management. One hundred leading experts from twenty five countries synthesise understanding of this group of species; discussing current research, and gaps in the knowledge of researchers, conservation biologists, zoologists, wildlife managers and students. This beautifully illustrated reference includes the long history of interactions between wild pigs and humans, the benefits some species have brought us and their role and impact on natural ecosystems.

Download or read book Ecology of Sulawesi written by Tony Whitten and published by Tuttle Publishing. This book was released on 2012-06-19 with total page 826 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Ecology of Sulawesi is a comprehensive ecological survey of one of Indonesia's least populated and most diverse islands. It is hoped that it will prove useful to resource managers, ecologists, environmental scientists and local government personnel, and be enlightening to Sulawesi's inhabitants and visitors. Sulawesi is one of the least-known islands of Indonesia, and wise environmental management, including the proper assessment of environmental management, including the proper assessment of environmental impacts arising from development projects and other activities, is currently very difficult.

Download or read book Indonesian Primates written by Sharon Gursky-Doyen and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-01-15 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Indonesia possesses the second largest primate population in the world, with over 33 different primate species. Although Brazil possesses more primate species, Indonesia outranks it in terms of its diversity of primates, ranging from prosimians (slow lorises and tarsiers), to a multitude of Old World Monkey species (macaques, langurs, proboscis moneys) to lesser apes (siamangs, gibbons) and great apes (orangutans). The primates of Indonesia are distributed throughout the archipelago. Partly in response to the number of primates distributed throughout the Indonesian archipelago, Indonesia is classified as the home of two biodiversity hotspots (Wallacea and Sundaland). In order to be classified as a hotspot, an area must have a large proportion of endemic species coupled with a high degree of threat including having lost more than 70% of its original habitat. Two areas within Indonesia meet these criteria. The tremendous diversity of primates in Indonesia, in conjunction with the conservation issues facing the primates of this region, created a need for this volume.

Book Agrobiodiversity Conservation and Economic Development

Download or read book Agrobiodiversity Conservation and Economic Development written by Andreas Kontoleon and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2008-10-03 with total page 572 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reflects current developments in the economics of agrobiodiversity and focuses its attention on the role agrobiodiversity can have for economic development. As a new and rapidly expanding subfield at the interface of environmental/ecological, agricultural and development economics, the editors and contributors to this volume provide a thorough, structured and authoritative coverage of this field. Topics covered include the economic modelling of agrobiodiversity, policy and governance solutions for the conservation of biodiversity in agricultural landscapes, contracts, markets and valuation. The authors include well-known and respected academics and researchers who have a real policy perspective into the role of agrobiodiversity and economic development. The book provides coherent and up to date coverage of the economics of in-situ agrobiodiversity conservation which is to a large extent currently absent. Though the material in the volume is primarily written for economists, its content and style are highly relevant and accessible to ecologists and conservation biologists, and to academics from other broad disciplines that are located within the areas of economics and ecology.

Book Fertility Food and Fever

Download or read book Fertility Food and Fever written by David E.F. Henley and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-11-15 with total page 723 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Combining historical geography with historical demography, and conceived as a study in environmental history, this book examines the long-term relationship between population, economy and environment in the northern half of the Indonesian island of Sulawesi. Using a rich variety of Dutch historical sources, including VOC and missionary archives, it attempts to reconstruct and analyse patterns of demographic, economic and landscape change throughout this large and ecologically diverse region over a period of almost three and a half centuries. Particular attention is given to the articulation between demographic and economic growth, to levels and determinants of reproductive fertility, to changing disease environments, and to the question of agricultural sustainability and its preconditions. The results call into question some common views regarding the reasons for low population growth, and the relationship between population density and landscape change, in the Southeast Asian past.
