Book Satellites Oceanography and Society

Download or read book Satellites Oceanography and Society written by D. Halpern and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2000-06-06 with total page 381 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book shows how the new observations from satellites required advances in theory and influenced societal decision-making. Chapters have a review with an extensive reference list, making the book an excellent source of information for biological and physical oceanographers and atmospheric scientists.A large range of state-of-the art applications of satellite data (altimeter, color, infrared radiometer, scatterometer, synthetic aperture radar) visible in regional-to-global scale ocean studies integrating satellite and in-situ measurements with circulation models are covered in the book. Subjects include forecasting of surface waves, both swell and windsea, and surface wind; El Niño/La Niña; exchange of water masses between ocean basins, Rossby waves; eddies and filaments; fisheries; coastal ocean dynamics; phytoplankton dynamics; and ideas to measure sea surface salinity.

Book High Spectral Resolution Infrared Remote Sensing for Earth s Weather and Climate Studies

Download or read book High Spectral Resolution Infrared Remote Sensing for Earth s Weather and Climate Studies written by Alain Chedin and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of major challenges facing Earth's science in the next decade and beyondis the development of an accurate long term observational data set to study global change. To accomplish this, a wide range of observations will be required to provide both new measurements, not previously achievable and measurements with a greater degreee of accuracy and resolution than the ones which are presently and currently available. Among the parameters that are currently retrieved from satellite vertical sounding observations, temperature and moisture profiles are the most important for the description of the thermodynamic state of the medium. Other parameters, like those describing the cloud fields, the surface state or the conditions close to the surface are also key parameters for meteorology and climatology. A new generation of high spectral atmospheric sounders in the infrared has recently been designed to provide both new and more accurate data about the atmosphere, land and oceans for application to climate studies. Among the important observations that these instruments should contribute to the climate data set are day and night global measurements of: atmospheric temperature profiles; relative humidity profiles; cloud field parameters; total ozone burden of the atmosphere; distribution of minor atmospehric gases (methane, carbonmonoxide and nitrous oxide).

Book Remote Sensing of the Earth s Surface and Atmosphere

Download or read book Remote Sensing of the Earth s Surface and Atmosphere written by COSPAR. Plenary Meeting and published by Elsevier Science & Technology. This book was released on 1992 with total page 902 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The sixty-six papers contained in this volume have been divided into four main chapters. Resource Mapping and Geophysical Surveys using Space Technology features four main areas. Firstly, the potentiality of MAGSAT data reduction to allocate crustal anomaly; secondly, the application of geophysical and geochemical data for mineral exploration; thirdly, the application of gamma-ray survey to locate the source of radioactive materials and lastly the importance of ground truths obtained by conventional geophysical surveys in the interpretation of satellite data. The chapter on Ice and Cloud Motions deduced from Satellite Imagery is in two sections, Cloud Winds - Methods and Accuracies and Ice Motion - Methods and Accuracies. Chapter 3 entitled Weather Analysis and Forecasting-Nowcasting to Extended Range Predictions focusses on the current status and future use of satellite observations in weather analysis and forecasting. Global weather predictions are expected to improve due to improved satellite observations and from the inclusion of small-scale physics supported by finer space and time resolution of the numerical models.

Book Climate Sensitivity to Radiative Perturbations

Download or read book Climate Sensitivity to Radiative Perturbations written by Herve LeTreut and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Current climate models diverge in their assessment of global warming that will result from the anthropogenic increase in trace gases. This is because they differ in their representation of the hydrological cycle (water vapour, clouds, snow and sea ice, soil moisture) and because a direct validation in terms of sensitivity is not possible. Indirect methods and approaches are therefore necessary to verify the models efficiently. The book provides an overview on different validation approaches. The use of satellite data is particularly stressed.
