Book The Tradition of Astronomy in India

Download or read book The Tradition of Astronomy in India written by B. V. Subbarayappa and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 588 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Illustrations: Numerous Colour Illustrations Description: The volumes of the Project of History of Science, Philosophy and Culture in Indian Civilization aim to discover the central aspects of India's heritage and present them in an interrelated manner. In spite of their unitary look, these volumes recognize the difference between the areas of material civilization and those of ideational culture. The Project is not being executed by a single group of thinkers, methodologically uniform or ideologically identical in their commitments. Rather, contributions are made by different scholars of diverse ideological persuasions and methodological approaches. The Project is marked by what may be called 'methodological pluralism'. In spite of its primarily historical character, this project, both in its conceptualization and execution, has been shaped by scholars drawn from different disciplines. It is the first time that an endeavour of such unique and comprehensive character has been undertaken to study critically a major world civilization. This Volume endeavours to present the perceptible facets of the tradition of astronomy in India : - the torch-bearers of this tradition and their texts; main characteristics of Indian astronomy; scientific approach to the phenomenon of eclipse; pancanga and its social dimensions including the vrata-s, festivals and other observances; origin of astrological ideas, their seeming links with astronomy and certain contradictions; extensive computations concerning planetary revolutions in a huge cyclic period, mean as well as true positions of planets and associated mathematical aspects. In order to have the narrative undisturbed, the related mathematical astronomy has been given in the Appendices. Computations apart, Indian astronomers were keen observers of the motions of celestial bodies and used several instruments, and this aspect has been dealt with appropriately. The question of transmissions in the early centuries before and after the Christian Era vis-a-vis the originality and endogenous developments of Indian astronomy, has been addressed in an objective manner. Since Islamic astronomy has also fostered its tradition in India for over 500 years, three articles on this have been reproduced in the Appendices. Indian astronomical texts are noted for their mathematical-astronomical scientific terminology which was so standardized that it enabled astronomers (who were separated both in time and space), to articulate and promote this tradition over the centuries, as evidenced by the extensive glossary of technical terms given at the end. It is hoped that this Volume, probably the first of its kind inasmuch as it sheds light on both the scientific and the long tradition of Indian astronomy, will be found useful by scholars and general readers alike.

Book excerpt: Lunar and solar eclipses have always fascinated human beings. Digging deep into history, Clemency Montelle examines the ways in which theoretical understanding of eclipses originated and how ancient and medieval cultures shared, developed, and preserved their knowledge of these awe-inspiring events. Eclipses were the celestial phenomena most challenging to understand in the ancient world. Montelle draws on original research—much of it derived from reading primary source material written in Akkadian and Sanskrit, as well as ancient Greek, Latin, and Arabic—to explore how observers in Babylon, the Islamic Near East, Greece, and India developed new astronomical and mathematical techniques to predict and describe the features of eclipses. She identifies the profound scientific discoveries of these four cultures and discusses how the societies exchanged information about eclipses. In constructing this history, Montelle establishes a clear pattern of the transmission of scientific ideas from one culture to another in the ancient and medieval world. Chasing Shadows is an invitingly written and highly informative exploration of the early history of astronomy.

Book Ancient Riddles of Solar Eclipses

Download or read book Ancient Riddles of Solar Eclipses written by Igor Taganov and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ancient astronomical manuscripts in addition to priceless chronicles of solar and lunar eclipses contain curious riddles, which are sometimes difficult to interpret by science. Astronomers and historians Igor Taganov and Ville Saari confirmed intuitive guesses of medieval Indian and Chinese astronomers and discovered the calendar cycles – the probabilities of total solar eclipse are larger in summer months and in southern regions. Moreover, analyzing the ancient chronicles of solar and lunar eclipses they found the sensational evidence of slow deceleration of the pace of time that can radically change our world outlook.

Download or read book The Indian Eclipse 1898 written by E. Walter Maunder and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-21 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Indian Eclipse, 1898: Report of the Expeditions Organized by the British Astronomical Association to Observe the Total Solar Eclipse of 1898, January 22 The British Astronomical Association was founded in October 1890, with the following objects: - The association of observers, especially the possessors of small telescopes, for mutual help, and their organisation in the work of astronomical observation. This is effected by the "Observing Sections," under experienced Directors. The circulation of current astronomical information by a monthly journal and by the memoirs of the various Sections; the encouragement of a popular interest in Astronomy by the monthly meetings of the Association, held not only in London, but also at the seats of the Branches - Manchester, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Sydney, and Melbourne. The Association now numbers considerably over eleven hundred members, and possesses an astronomical library and a large collection of astronomical lantern slides for loan to members; and an observatory for education and research will shortly be available. The following Report gives an account of the second expedition organised by the Association to observe an eclipse of the sun. Any profits resulting from its sale will be devoted to the aid of future similar expeditions, the next of which - namely, that to Portugal, Spain, Algeria, and the United States, to observe the eclipse of 1900, May 28 - is now being arranged for. The entrance fee to the Association is five shillings; the annual subscription is half a guinea. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Siddh ntasundara of J nar ja

Download or read book The Siddh ntasundara of J nar ja written by Jñānarāja and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2014-10-20 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first English translation of this major work of classical Indian astronomy and mathematics. A treasure for anyone interested in early modern India and the history of mathematics, this first English translation of the Siddhāntasundara reveals the fascinating work of the scholar-astronomer Jñānarāja (circa 1500 C.E.). Toke Lindegaard Knudsen begins with an introduction to the traditions of ancient Hindu astronomy and describes what is known of Jñānarāja’s life and family. He translates the Sanskrit verses into English and offers expert commentary on the style and substance of Jñānarāja's treatise. The Siddhāntasundara contains a comprehensive exposition of the system of Indian astronomy, including how to compute planetary positions and eclipses. It also explores deep, probing questions about the workings of the universe and sacred Hindu traditions. In a philosophical discussion, the treatise seeks a synthesis between the cosmological model used by the Indian astronomical tradition and the cosmology of a class of texts sacred in Hinduism. In his discourse, which includes a discussion of the direction of down and adhesive antipodeans, Jñānarāja rejects certain principles from the astronomical tradition and reinterprets principles from the sacred texts. He also constructs a complex poem on the seasons, many verses of which have two layers of meaning, one describing a season, the other a god's activities in that season. The Siddhāntasundara is the last major treatise of Indian astronomy and cosmology to receive serious scholarly attention, Knudsen’s careful effort unveils the 500-year-old Sanskrit verses and shows the clever quirkiness of Jñānarāja's writing style, his keen use of mathematics, and his subtle philosophical arguments.

Book Tantrasa graha of N laka ha Somay j

Download or read book Tantrasa graha of N laka ha Somay j written by K. Ramasubramanian and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-06-16 with total page 631 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tantrasangraha, composed by the renowned Kerala astronomer Nīlakantha Somayājī (c.1444-1545 AD) ranks along with Āryabhatīya of Āryabhata and Siddhāntaśiromani of Bhāskarācārya as one of the major works which significantly influenced further work on astronomy in India. One of the distinguishing features is the introduction of a major revision of the traditional Indian planetary model. Nīlakantha arrived at a unified theory of planetary latitudes and a better formulation of the equation of centre for the interior planets (Mercury and Venus) than was previously available. In preparing the translation and explanatory notes, K. Ramasubramanian and M. S. Sriram have used authentic Sanskrit editions of Tantrasangraha by Surand Kunjan Pillai and K V Sarma. All verses have been translated into English, which have been supplemented with detailed explanations including all necessary mathematical relations, illustrative examples, figures and tables using modern mathematical notation.
