Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Line by Line: Progressive Staff Method Arrangements for Elementary Music Literacy, author Stephanie L. Standerfer harnesses years of pedagogical expertise in a practical guide that promotes music learning by experience rather than imitation and memorization. Using well-known songs and instrumental accompaniments, this book contains a new practical method for teaching music literacy. The book's lesson plans first introduce concepts to the ear and body that allow students to internalize the sound and feeling before learning the symbol. Through this method, students learn and understand songs without the teacher modeling them and develop musicianship skills in the process. The arrangements include instrument parts for the typical complement of melodic instruments including glockenspiels, xylophones, and metallophones. Each arrangement includes at least one instrument part for more advanced learners, and one or more parts for students at lower skill levels. Music educators then complete individual lesson plans by teaching instrumental parts, again from notation instead of imitation. In this method, each song is taught over five to seven class periods as short segments of a regular class meeting, leaving time for other musical experiences such as listening lessons or folk dances. Taking every student into consideration, Line by Line also suggests ways to address specific student needs for those who need more time to process or who have specific diagnosed issues.

Book excerpt: An exploration of echo not as simple repetition but as an agent of creative possibilities. In this volume in the MIT Press Essential Knowledge series, Amit Pinchevski proposes that echo is not simple repetition and the reproduction of sameness but an agent of change and a source of creation and creativity. Pinchevski views echo as a medium, connecting and mediating across and between disparate domains. He reminds us that the mythological Echo, sentenced by Juno to repeat the last words of others, found a way to make repetition expressive. So too does echo introduce variation into sameness, mediating between self and other, inside and outside, known and unknown, near and far. Echo has the potential to bring back something unexpected, either more or less than what was sent. Pinchevski distinguishes echo from the closely related but sometimes conflated reflection, reverberation, and resonance; considers echolalia as an active, reactive, and creative vocalic force, the launching pad of speech; and explores echo as a rhetorical device, steering between appropriation and response while always maintaining relation. He examines the trope of echo chamber and both destructive and constructive echoing; describes various echo techniques and how echo can serve practical purposes from echolocation in bats and submarines to architecture and sound recording; explores echo as a link to the past, both literally and metaphorically; and considers echo as medium using Marshall McLuhan’s tetrad.

Book excerpt: 'Maternal Echoes' examines maternal imagery in the poetry of two French Romantic poets, the increasingly popular Desbordes-Valmore and the critically marginalized Lamartine. Drawing on psychoanalytic theories on the maternal voice as well as feminist criticism, the book argues that both poets find a voice of their own by echoing their mother's voice.

Book Let There Be Light The Story Of Light From Atoms To Galaxies

Download or read book Let There Be Light The Story Of Light From Atoms To Galaxies written by Alex Montwill and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2008-09-29 with total page 630 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first of its kind to devote itself at this level to the key role played by light and electromagnetic radiation in the universe. Readers are introduced to philosophical hypotheses such as the economy, symmetry, and universality of natural laws, and are then guided to practical consequences such as the rules of geometrical optics and even Einstein's well-known but mysterious relationship, E = mc2. Most chapters feature a pen picture of the life and character of a relevant scientific figure. These “Historical Interludes” include, among others, Galileo's conflicts with the Inquisition, Fourier's taunting of the guillotine, Neils Bohr and World War II, and the unique character of Richard Feynman.Going one step beyond the popular level, this easy-to-read book gives an overall view to undergraduate and postgraduate physics students that is often missing when trying to assimilate the technical details of their courses. Through its original treatment of topics and enjoyable style of writing, it will also stimulate keen interest in general readers who are interested in science and have a basic mathematics background as well as teachers looking for basic and accurate background information./a
