Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In States of Passion: Law, Identity and the Social Construction of Desire, Professor Yvonne Zylan explores the role of legal discourse in shaping sexual experience, sexual expression, and sexual identity. The book focuses on three topics: anti-gay hate crime laws, same-sex sexual harassment, and same-sex marriage, examining how sexuality is socially constructed through the institutionally-specific production of legal discourse. States of Passion argues that law's power to authorize specific discourses and practices of love, desire, hatred, fear, and vulnerability remain grounded in the powerful discourses and institutional practices that mark law as dispassionate, cerebral, and fundamentally procedural. States of Passion contends that those states of passion we experience in our daily lives as particularly significant-to our sense of self, to our collective and social identities, and to our ideas about the body and its dictates-increasingly have as much to do with the state as they do with passion.

Book A Topography Plagued by Marginality in Victorian Novels

Download or read book A Topography Plagued by Marginality in Victorian Novels written by Catalina Balinisteanu-Furdu and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2022-04-12 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this book is to analyse how marginality is experienced by ́the Other ́ (women, orphans, children, labourers) in Victorian literature and how these individuals succeed in transgressing borders or attempt at doing this. The Other uses many strategies to climb the social ladder and to preserve a certain social position: marrying into a superior social class, subverting the master ́s position and usurping him, acquiring education and knowledge to become superior, tempting the master into passionate love affairs, approaching interpersonal communication, or staying true to one ́s own self, defending ones moral values, accepting lessons of domesticity, becoming an ́angel in the house ́, travelling to unknown territories, exchanging reality for fictional worlds, and so on. On their way of achieving their goals, the Others are shown in different spaces which contribute to the construction of their identity. Our survey unfolds the complexity of the marginalization experience of the Victorian Others, their individual or collective mentality and their agency. Drawing on Otherness from six Victorian novels, our book takes an interpretative approach. The analysis of spaces revealed how the positionality of women or orphans or labourers in social hierarchies of gender, race and legal status influences and even affects their legitimacy or access to a superior position. Their agency has not always overcome their marginalization embedded within the structure of society, but at least temporarily and gradually it has improved the women ́s living conditions by being rewarded with a beautiful family or by earning a living thus eluding the dependency on a man. By contextualizing the six novels into the Victorian Age, our survey will hopefully contribute to the understanding of women and of their attempts at emancipation by demonstrating how their positionality impacts their agency and their personality.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this monograph is to analyze Agustín Moreto and Cabaña's dramatic production as one that shows influences of both neoclassical and baroque precepts. Moreto will thus be seen as a transitional playwright, a fact illustrated by the three plays studied. The analysis will further show that Moreto, due to his Neoclassical inclinations, was popular in France, and compared adaptations to the sources. Finally, the monograph will focus on the portrayal of the heroines and its implications for female roles.

Download or read book Please Sir written by Rachel Kramer Bussel and published by Cleis Press. This book was released on 2010-04-07 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fortunate women of Please, Sir are not docile pushovers by any means. They make the rules and negotiate with their masters — though sometimes they also get off on being pushed just a little too far by men they know they can trust. It's as if the doms who enter their lives see the potential for submission in these women and want to arouse them more than ever before by providing an opportunity for them to let go. The editor of the bestsellers He's on Top and Yes, Sir, Rachel Kramer Bussel has chosen 22 stories that celebrate the thrill of submission by women who know exactly what they want. The characters in Please, Sir may be doing the bidding of their dominants, but the tops are just as much subject to the will of their subs, in their own way, by making them ache, moan, and quiver. With stories by Shanna Germain, Elizabeth Coldwell, Alison Tyler, and more.
