Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Echoes From Years Gone James Hoggarth, the eldest of seven children, all boys, was born July 13, 1834, in a small cottage, at Ambleside, Westmorland. His father, Thomas Hoggarth, was born in the valley of Longsleddale, Westmorland, January 5, 1805, and was the youngest and only son of three children of Thomas Hoggarth, a small farmer, who was born in the vale of Troutbeck, Westmorland, and related to the Woodburne and Birkett families, of Troutbeck. James, soon after he was born, to all appearance, was unlikely to live long. His father, anxious to have him baptized, walked, by way of Kirkstone Pass, to Troutbeck, to the house of his old friend, the Rev. William Sewell, the Vicar; and, reaching the house about midnight, knocked loudly at the door, which aroused the rev. gentleman, who, thinking that there was something very important requiring his attention, hurriedly jumped out of bed, and, throwing the window wide open, popped out his head, and shouted at the top of his voice, "Whaa's theear at this time o' neet?" "It's me," came the answer. "And whaa's me, I pray tha," said the parson. "I am Thomas Hoggarth, of Ambleside," was the reply. "I have come to ask you if you will oblige me by coming to-night to my house, to baptize a child which seems not likely to live very long. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Israel’s exodus from Egypt is the Bible’s enduring emblem of deliverance. It is the archetypal anvil on which the scriptural language of deliverance is shaped. More than just an epic moment, the exodus shapes the telling of Israel’s and the church’s gospel. From the blasting furnace of Egypt, imagery pours forth. In the Song of Moses Yahweh overcomes the Egyptian army, sending them plummeting to the bottom of the sea. But the exodus motif continues as God leads Israel through the wilderness, marches to Sinai and on the Zion. It fires the psalmist’s poetry and inspires Isaiah’s second-exodus rhapsodies. As it pulses through the veins of the New Testament, the Gospel writers hear exodus resonances from Jesus’ birth to the gates of Jerusalem. Paul casts Christ’s deliverance in exodus imagery, and the Apocalypse reverberates with exodus themes. In Echoes of Exodus, Bryan Estelle traces the motif as it weaves through the canon of Scripture. Wedding literary readings with biblical-theological insights, he helps us weigh again what we know and recognize anew what we have not seen. More than that, he introduces us to the study of quotation, allusion, and echo, providing a firm theoretical basis for hermeneutical practice and understanding. Echoes of Exodus is a guide for students and biblical theologians, and a resource for preachers and teachers of the Word.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The seventh Outlander novel from #1 National Bestselling author Diana Gabaldon. Jamie Fraser, erstwhile Jacobite and reluctant rebel, knows three things about the American rebellion: the Americans will win, unlikely as that seems in 1778; being on the winning side is no guarantee of survival; and he’d rather die than face his illegitimate son—a young lieutenant in the British Army—across the barrel of a gun. Fraser’s time-travelling wife, Claire, also knows a couple of things: that the Americans will win, but that the ultimate price of victory is a mystery. What she does believe is that the price won’t include Jamie’s life or happiness—not if she has anything to say. Claire’s grown daughter Brianna, and her husband, Roger, watch the unfolding of Brianna’s parents’ history—a past that may be sneaking up behind their own family.

Book excerpt: 'His relish is infectious' Times 'The funniest book I've read in ages. Savage but compelling' Ian Rankin 'Funny, rumbustious, unstinting and wonderfully Hogarthian' The Observer 'Sharp, funny, and beautifully written... a brilliant reflection on the landscape we now live in' Joanna Cannon _______________ What a thing of wonder a mobile phone is. Six ounces of metal, glass and plastic, fashioned into a sleek, shiny, precious object. At once, a gateway to other worlds - and a treacherous weapon in the hands of the unwary, the unwitting, the inept. The Cleverley family live a gilded life, little realising how precarious their privilege is, just one tweet away from disaster. George, the patriarch, is a stalwart of television interviewing, a 'national treasure' (his words), his wife Beverley, a celebrated novelist (although not as celebrated as she would like), and their children, Nelson, Elizabeth, Achilles, various degrees of catastrophe waiting to happen. Together they will go on a journey of discovery through the Hogarthian jungle of the modern living where past presumptions count for nothing and carefully curated reputations can be destroyed in an instant. Along the way they will learn how volatile, how outraged, how unforgiving the world can be when you step from the proscribed path. Powered by John Boyne's characteristic humour and razor-sharp observation, The Echo Chamber is a satiric helter skelter, a dizzying downward spiral of action and consequence, poised somewhere between farce, absurdity and oblivion. To err is maybe to be human but to really foul things up you only need a phone. The new novel by John Boyne, WATER, is available for pre-order now.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is the object of the author; by this volume; to place before the people a brief history of the western states and territories through which he traveled in a late long overland tour; together with a sketch of the customs and occupations of the people in all the parts described. A journey by wagon through so much territory; by so many unknown; has furnished the author with knowledge that will be of so much value to persons who think of going West; and more especially to those who intend trying their fortunes in the regions of the setting sun; that he feels himself somewhat in duty bound to reduce it to print. Many fabulous and speculative histories have been written of the same country; and; with prejudiced pens; they have been deceitful records.
