Book excerpt: EB is a love-song to a time and a place. A wonderful place of neighborhoods and parishes and consistency and constancy; a place of well-used front stoops, second-home candy stores and club-like saloons; a place of time honored values and life-long friendships; a contrarily sophisticated but endearingly innocent place; the biggest small town in America...Brooklyn, NY. At a magical moment in time...the 1940s and '50s. "...an evocative coming-of-age story...an honest and engaging tale of a feisty Catholic Irish kid growing up in the 1940s and 1950s East Flatbush. Kemp describes his world in meticulous detail, painting a vivid picture that those who have never set foot in Brooklyn can easily envision." —Sharon Seitz; USA TODAY

Book In the Words of E B White

Download or read book In the Words of E B White written by E. B. White and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2011-11-15 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The time not to become a father is eighteen years before a world war."—E. B. White on fatherhood "I was lucky to be born abnormal. It ran in the family."—on luck "I would really rather feel bad in Maine than feel good anywhere else." —on Maine "The English language is always sticking a foot out to trip a man."—on language The author of Charlotte's Web and One Man's Meat, coauthor of The Elements of Style, and columnist for The New Yorker for almost half a century, E. B. White (1899–1985) is an American literary icon. Over the course of his career, White inspired generations of writers and readers with his essays (both serious and humorous), children's literature, and stylistic guidance. In the Words of E. B. White offers readers a delightful selection of quotations, selected and annotated by his granddaughter and literary executor, Martha White. The quotations cover a wide range of subjects and situations, from Automobiles, Babies, Bees, City Life, and College to Spiders, Taxes, Weather, Work, and Worry. E. B. White comments on writing for children, how to tell a major poet from a minor one, and what to do when one becomes hopelessly mired in a sentence. White was apt to address the subject of security by speaking first about a Ferris wheel at the local county fair, or the subject of democracy from the perspective of roofing his barn and looking out across the bay—he had a gift for bringing the abstract firmly into the realm of the everyday. Included here are gems from White's books and essay collections, as well as bits from both published and unpublished letters and journals. This is a book for readers and writers, for those who know E. B. White from his "Notes and Comment" column in The New Yorker, have turned to The Elements of Style for help in crafting a polished sentence, or have loved a spider's assessment of Wilbur as "Some Pig." This distillation of the wit, style, and humanity of one of America's most distinguished essayists of the twentieth century will be a welcome addition to any reader's bookshelf.

Book B EB 66 Destroyer Units in Combat

Download or read book B EB 66 Destroyer Units in Combat written by Peter E. Davies and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2021-02-18 with total page 97 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Studies of air combat in the Vietnam War inevitably focus on the MiG-killing fighter engagements, B-52 onslaughts or tactical strikes on the Hanoi region. However, underlying all these was the secretive 'electron war' in which highly-skilled electronic warfare officers duelled with Soviet and North Vietnamese radar operators in the attempt to enable US strike forces to reach their targets with minimal losses. Orbiting at the edge of heavily-defended territory, the vulnerable EB-66s identified and jammed the enemy's radar frequencies with electronic emissions and chaff to protect the American bombers. Their hazardous missions resulted in six combat losses, four of them to SA-2 missiles and one to a MiG-21, and they became prime targets for North Vietnamese defences when their importance was realised. This illustrated study focuses on the oft-overlooked B-66 series, examining their vital contributions to the Vietnam War and the bravery of those who operated them in some of the most challenging situations imaginable. Author Peter E. Davies also explores how the technology and tactics devised during the period made possible the development of the EF-111A Raven, an invaluable component of the Desert Storm combat scenario over Iraq and Kuwait in 1991, and the US Navy's EA-6B Prowler, which entered service towards the end of the Vietnam War.

Book The Philosophical Background and Scientific Legacy of E B Titchener s Psychology

Download or read book The Philosophical Background and Scientific Legacy of E B Titchener s Psychology written by Christian Beenfeldt and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-05-24 with total page 77 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume offers a new understanding of Titchener’s influential system of psychology popularly known as introspectionism, structuralism and as classical introspective psychology. Adopting a new perspective on introspectionism and seeking to assess the reasons behind its famous implosion, this book reopens and rewrites the chapter in the history of early scientific psychology pertaining to the nature of E. B. Titchener’s psychological system. Arguing against the view that Titchener’s system was undone by an overreliance on introspection, the author explains how this idea was first introduced by the early behaviorists in order to advance their own theoretical agenda. Instead, the author argues that the major philosophical flaw of introspectionism was its utter reliance on key theoretical assumptions inherited from the intellectual tradition of British associationism—assumptions that were upheld in defiance of introspection, not because of introspection. The book is divided into three parts. In Part I, British associationism is examined thoroughly. The author here discusses the psychology of influential empiricist philosophers such as Thomas Hobbes, John Locke, David Hume, David Hartley, James Mill, and John Stuart Mill. In Part II of the book, Titchener’s introspectionist system of psychology is examined and analyzed. In Part III, the author argues that Titchener’s psychology should be understood as a form of associationism and explains how analysis, not introspection, was central to introspectionism.
