Book Forty Seven Straight

Download or read book Forty Seven Straight written by Harold Keith and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 2003 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Football tradition at the University of Oklahoma still runs strong, as does the record of forty-seven consecutive victories that legendary coach Bud Wilkinson and his players set in the 1950s. Approached but never equaled by teams such as Washington, Miami, and Texas, the streak contributed to the acclaim Wilkinson garnered by amassing an impressive three national championships (1950, 1955, and 1956), twelve consecutive conference titles, twenty-three straight wins on opposing fields, Top Ten rankings for eleven successive years, and a thirty-one game winning streak before the unforgettable “forty-seven straight.” Forty-seven Straight details how the record grew, season by season, as told by sixty-one of Wilkinson’s players during interviews with Harold Keith, the university’s sports publicist who witnessed all 178 football games during the Wilkinson era at OU. The players recall Wilkinson’s and his staff’s style, methods, and strategies while vividly recalling their most dramatic games. The scholastic integrity of Wilkinson’s program, which included high academic standards and graduation rates, produced a successful group of career-minded players.

Book Snapshots The Veteran s View

Download or read book Snapshots The Veteran s View written by Kim Lengling and published by Page Publishing Inc. This book was released on 2015-01-29 with total page 93 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is great to be alive—technology makes everything available to us in our homes, and the law of democracy gives us the freedom to be. But we easily get so caught up in the daily grind that we often forget these basic concepts, often forget the people that have made it possible for us to be safe and free and able to speak our minds. Kim Lengling writes about the constant sacrifice that our deployed troops make for us to live in peaceful times with our families. She relates how project Support Our Troops, a project she cochairs, has been sending care packages to active-duty military for the past fifteen years, and how we can make a difference in the lives of these brave men and women. And it can all begin with you, in your neighborhood: “Take a moment to listen to someone. Truly hear their story, and if it is needed, find a way to help. Help can be given in so many ways. One way, which is so simple but often overlooked, is to simply have an open heart and be that person who listens. You can make a world of difference without even realizing it.”

Book Women s American Football

Download or read book Women s American Football written by Russ Crawford and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2022-11 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tackle football has been primarily viewed as a male sport, but at a time when men's participation rates are decreasing, an increasing number of women are entering the gridiron--and they have a long history of doing so. Women's American Football is a narrative history of girls and women participating in American football in the United States since the 1920s, when a women's team played at halftime during an early NFL game. The women's game became more organized in 1974, when the National Women's Football League was established, with notable teams such as the Dallas Bluebonnets, Toledo Troopers, Oklahoma City Dolls, and Detroit Demons. Today there are two main professional leagues in the United States: the Women's Football Alliance, with nearly seventy teams, and the Women's National Football Conference, with eighteen, in addition to a number of smaller leagues. The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics and the NFL have recently begun sponsoring flag football teams at the college level, and the game is growing for high school girls as well. In 2021 more than two thousand girls played on mostly boys' teams, and there are currently four all-girls leagues in the United States and Canada, in Manitoba, Utah, Indiana, and New Brunswick. In addition to the rapid growth of women playing football, there have been advancements in other areas of the game. Beginning with Jennifer Welter in 2015, several women have earned positions coaching the professional game. In 2020 ESPN aired Born to Play, a documentary on the Boston Renegades, the 2019 champion of the Women's Football Alliance. Based on extensive interviews with women players and focusing closely on leagues, teams, and athletes since the passage of Title IX in 1972, Russ Crawford illuminates the rich history of the women who have played football, breaking barriers on and off the field.
