Book The Mutt

Download or read book The Mutt written by Rodney Mullen and published by Harper Collins. This book was released on 2004-07-20 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At age six, Rodney Mullen was the family misfit who had to wear braces to straighten out his pigeon-toed feet. But by age fourteen, he was a world-champion skateboarder -- and for the next decade lost only one contest. Now, for the first time, Rodney tells the incredible story of his ascent to fame as the number one nerd in a sport where anarchy is often encouraged. Rodney learned to skate by himself on the family farm, his only company the wandering cows. As a teenager he traveled the world for demonstrations, invented the flatground ollie -- a trick that laid the foundation for modern street skating -- and in ten years garnered thirty-five world skating titles. While acing skateboard contests Rodney also earned straight A's in school, but his father forced him to abandon his fame and the fortune he could make from the sport he loved. Rodney was unable to stop for very long though, even after freestyle skating went out of fashion and the skateboarding world abandoned him. He adapted to street skating and eventually became one of the most innovative and influential skaters of all time. It's all here: everything from his eating and sleeping disorders to his comical experiences with loan sharks, occult-obsessed relatives, and the FBI. The Mutt is a look at Rodney's strange journey from penniless skateboarder to millionaire.

Book Losing Aaron

Download or read book Losing Aaron written by Ingrid Blaufarb Hughes and published by Irene Weinberger Books. This book was released on 2017-01-16 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Losing Aaron is the story of the life and death of Aaron Hughes told by his mother, Ingrid Blaufarb Hughes. It describes the devastation of his mind by schizophrenia and the ways that his illness reverberated through the family altering everyone's life. In his teens Aaron was sensible, poised, and brilliantly able in his schoolwork and projects and a generous support to friends and family. Excerpts from his high school journals and medical records suggest that even in high school his illness was beginning its insidious attack. It progressed until, in his first year of graduate school at the age of twenty-four, he told his mother that people were making fun of him on the streets "in an organized and systematic way." She realized then that he was psychotic. His parents and sister visited Aaron at many critical points, first in Boston and later in Paris, where he lived a marginal existence for several years. They consulted with psychiatrists and supported him as well as they could, though feeling throughout that the real Aaron had been stolen away, leaving in his place a bitterly hostile young man who believed his parents were paid imposters. Though the years of his illness were a time of deep sorrow, frustration, and disruption for his family, they were grateful when he returned home to live with them. In the end he took his own life at thirty-one.

Book The Sun Valley Story

Download or read book The Sun Valley Story written by Van Gordon Sauter and published by . This book was released on 2011-11-18 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On the occasion of the 75th anniversary of Sun Valley's founding, respected journalist, distinguished television executive, and renowned raconteur Van Gordon Sauter tells the remarkable story of the transformation of a remote Idaho mountain valley into America's first luxury ski resort and, eventually, one of the country's most beloved year-round vacation retreats. His fascinating anecdotal history is constructed around the personal passions and signal contributions of the resort's three successive owners: New York aristocrat and Union Pacific Railroad chairman Averell Harriman, Los Angeles land developer and Olympic skier Bill Janss, and self-made Salt Lake City oil man and hotel magnate Earl Holding. Sauter lavishes special attention on recounting how Harriman's founding vision was, with breathtaking alacrity over eleven months in 1936, translated into the unique, opulent, and acclaimed reality that formed the enduring base for the spectacular resort we know today.Splendidly endowed by both nature and culture, Sun Valley and its environs are surrounded by four magnificent mountain ranges (one incorporating Bald Mountain, regarded by many as the premier ski mountain in the world) that are watered by four diverse, revered fishing streams, their beauty protected forever by virtue of their abiding largely on federal lands. It possesses a colorful history that includes Native Americans, fur trappers, late-19th century miners and railroaders, early-20th century sheep barons, and, since the 1930's, a low key but glamorous life that has drawn not only the top European and domestic figures in the sport of skiing but also the rich, the celebrated, and the accomplished-among them Ernest Hemingway and Marilyn Monroe, the founders of Facebook and Microsoft, and the author of this book's foreword, Clint Eastwood, to name a few-to this exceptional place. Complementing Sauter's lively text is an offering of stunning vintage and contemporary images, many of them fresh to print, that capture the landscape, the history, and the individuals that have and continue to make Sun Valley an American original.
