Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How did 2.3 billion people become overweight? How did heart disease, cancer, and other degenerative diseases become the leading causes of death worldwide? Our ancestors, especially our distant, Paleolithic ancestors, before the advent of agricultural, enjoyed remarkably robust health. What went wrong? During the twentieth century-the Dark Ages of nutrition-flawed nutritional theories gained widespread acceptance, prompting radical departures from traditional foods and time-honored food processing techniques. Sugar consumption skyrocketed; proinflammatory vegetable oils replaced nourishing animal fats; processed foods became commonplace. In this groundbreaking book, Christopher Clark explores the social and economic forces enabling these changes while thoroughly and lucidly explaining modern scientific perspectives on fat metabolism, cholesterol, fructose metabolism, gluten, detoxification, and many other important nutritional subjects. Nutritional Grail offers life-transforming knowledge regarding what to eat, why to eat it, and how to prepare it-including 100 simple, delicious recipes. Like the original twelfth-century grail story, this knowledge comes through asking questions, serving others, and serving one's higher Self. While laying out a comprehensive strategy for effortless weight loss, improved digestion, and increased energy, Clark convincingly suggests a nutritional renaissance, propelled by science and guided by the wisdom of our ancestors, is finally dawning.

Book Accountability in education meeting our commitments

Download or read book Accountability in education meeting our commitments written by UNESCO and published by UNESCO Publishing. This book was released on 2017-10-30 with total page 505 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The second edition of the Global Education Monitoring Report (GEM Report) presents the latest evidence on global progress towards the education targets of the UN Sustainable Development Goals. With hundreds of millions of people still not going to school, and many not achieving minimum skills at school, it is clear education systems are off track to achieve global goals. The marginalized currently bear the most consequences but also stand to benefit the most if policy-makers pay sufficient attention to their needs. Faced with these challenges, along with tight budgets and increased emphasis on results-oriented value for money, countries are searching for solutions. Increased accountability often tops the list. The 2017/8 GEM Report shows the entire array of approaches to accountability in education. It ranges from countries unused to the concept, where violations of the right to education go unchallenged, to countries where accountability has become an end in itself instead of a means to inclusive, equitable and high-quality education and lifelong learning for all. The report emphasizes that education is a shared responsibility. While governments have primary responsibility, all actors - schools, teachers, parents, students, international organizations, private sector providers, civil society and the media 0́3 have a role in improving education systems. The report emphasized the importance of transparency and availability of information but urges caution in how data are used. It makes the case for avoiding accountability systems with a disproportionate focus on narrowly defined results and punitive sanctions. In an era of multiple accountability tools, the report provides clear evidence on those that are working and those that are not."--Back cover.

Book A Guide to Medical Teaching and Learning Training of the Trainers Tot

Download or read book A Guide to Medical Teaching and Learning Training of the Trainers Tot written by Dr. Abdullah Dukhail Al-Khatami and published by Partridge Publishing Singapore. This book was released on 2018-07-27 with total page 157 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book helps medical teachers and students develop the best approach to ensure a high level of learning achievement. Dr. Abdullah Dukhail Al-Khatami begins by outlining the traditional learning model and how it differs from the learner-centered model. He argues that we must recognize the ineffectiveness of how weve taught medical students in the past. The best way to achieve learning, he says, is to encourage learning skills, and collaboration learning between the learners and their supervisours. through the supervision meeting assessment, to identify their learning gap, achievement process, and achievement assessment. Instead of focusing on surface learning or memorization, learner-centered learning connects current learning to past experiences. That leads to deep learning and helps learners organize information. This newer approach leverages small groups to further the learning process. Feedback, reflection, and work-based assessments measure achievements. By following the models best practices, youll be able to: prepare trainees to succeed in the field; manage your time more efficiently; encourage appropriate communication skills and professionalism; and convince trainees that goals are achievable. Filled with checklists, summaries, graphs, exercises, and additional resources, this is a must-have guide for anyone serious about medical education.

Book War and Conflict in the Middle East and North Africa

Download or read book War and Conflict in the Middle East and North Africa written by Ariel I. Ahram and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2020-09-29 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For much of the last half century, the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) has seemed the outlier in global peace. Today Iraq, Libya, Israel/Palestine, Yemen, and Syria are not just countries, but synonyms for prolonged and brutal wars. But why is MENA so exceptionally violent? More importantly, can it change? Exploring the causes and consequences of wars and conflicts in this troubled region, Ariel Ahram helps readers answer these questions. In Part I, Ahram shows how MENA’s conflicts evolved with the formation of its states. Violence varied from civil wars and insurgencies to traditional interstate conflicts and affected some countries more frequently than others. The strategies rulers employed to stay in power constrained how they recruited, trained, and equipped their armies. Part II explores dynamics that trap the region in conflict—oil dependence, geopolitical interference, and embedded identity cleavages. The catastrophic wars of the 2010s reflect the confounding effects of these traps, culminating in state collapse and intervention from the US and Russia, as well as regional powers like Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE. Finally, Ahram considers the possibilities of peace, highlighting the disjuncture between local peacebuilding and national and internationally-backed mediation. War and Conflict in the Middle East and North Africa will be an essential resource for students of peace and security studies and MENA politics, and anyone wanting to move beyond headlines and soundbites to understand the historical and social roots of MENA’s conflicts.

Book Want Waste or War

Download or read book Want Waste or War written by Philip Andrews-Speed and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-11-13 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In addition to environmental change, the structure and trends of global politics and the economy are also changing as more countries join the ranks of the world’s largest economies with their resource-intensive patterns. The nexus approach, conceptualized as attention to resource connections and their governance ramifications, calls attention to the sustainability of contemporary consumer resource use, lifestyles and supply chains. This book sets out an analytical framework for understanding these nexus issues and the related governance challenges and opportunities. It sheds light on the resource nexus in three realms: markets, interstate relations and local human security. These three realms are the organizing principle of three chapters, before the analysis turns to crosscutting case studies including shale gas, migration, lifestyle changes and resource efficiency, nitrogen fertilizer and food systems, water and the Nile Basin, climate change and security and defense spending. The key issues revolve around competition and conflict over finite natural resources. The authors highlight opportunities to improve both the understanding of nexus challenges and their governance. They critically discuss a global governance approach versus polycentric and multilevel approaches and the lack of those dimensions in many theories of international relations.

Book Critical Issues in Healthcare Policy and Politics in the Gulf Cooperation Council States

Download or read book Critical Issues in Healthcare Policy and Politics in the Gulf Cooperation Council States written by Ravinder Mamtani and published by Georgetown University Press. This book was released on 2018-01-02 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book to examine challenges in the healthcare sector in the six Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries (Saudi Arabia, Oman, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Kuwait, and Bahrain). These countries experienced remarkably swift transformations from small fishing and pearling communities at the beginning of the twentieth century to wealthy petro-states today. Their healthcare systems, however, are only now beginning to catch up. Rapid changes to the population and lifestyles of the GCC states have completely changed—and challenged—the region’s health profile and infrastructure. While major successes in combatting infectious diseases and improving standards of primary healthcare are reflected in key health indicators, new trends have developed; increasingly “lifestyle” or “wealthy country” diseases, such as diabetes, heart disease, and cancer, have replaced the old maladies. To meet these emerging healthcare needs, GCC states require highly trained and skilled healthcare workers, an environment that supports local training, state-of-the-art diagnostic laboratories and hospitals, research production and dissemination, and knowledge acquisition. They face shortages in most if not all of these areas. This book provides a comprehensive study of the rapidly changing health profile of the region, the existing conditions of healthcare systems, and the challenges posed to healthcare management across the six states of the GCC.
