Excerpt: ...being completed, the sower was beginning to sow. He had literally come forth to sow; for he came from the village of Irbid, several miles off, on the hills to the south. His basket of seed slung under his left arm, with steady measured pace he marched up and down his portion of the open field, jerking his handful of corn before him at each step. Two narrow paths intersected his corn-patch. These necessarily received their share of seed, where it did not long remain; for a few jackdaws and some little flocks of larks and buntings followed the sower, and speedily swept the pathways clean. The seed on the rich light soil was soon brushed in by a lad, with a bunch of twigs used as a rake. But much of this must come to nought. We spoke above of the rocks and stones with which the plain is strewn. Most of these boulders have sunk into the black earth, but only far enough to be covered with a sprinkling of soil by the harrow. At present all the surface is moist, and the seed will germinate, soon to be burned up by the scorching sun, like grass on the housetop. Every here and there we may see small stalks protruding. They are-the stumps of the most noxious weed of Gennesaret, a sort of astragalus (Astragalus c/zristianus), with its roots penetrating, as we found by experiment, several feet deep, and which the fellaheen are too indolent to dig up and extirpate, contenting themselves with chopping down the year's growth with their mattocks. Close alongside of these boulders and rock clumps are patches of the richest soil the earth produces, consisting of decomposed basalt from the stones which strew the surface. In good seasons, when there has been abundant "latter rain," a hundredfold is not an unusual crop in this fertile nook....

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bible Lands: Their Modern Customs and Manners Illustrative of Scripture In every nation, however, usages are found which can not be explained or accounted for by a reference to the physical char acter of the country. These customs have an historical original, lost and forgotten, perhaps, in the lapse of time, but still main taining its sway over the minds and manners of those who have inherited them. The fact that the customs now prevalent in Bible lands are so different from those of the West, and yet es sentially identical with the ancient manners of the East, is of the greatest practical importance to the Biblical student. The Hebrew commonwealth has perished; its people are scattered among all the nations of the earth, whose manners they have adopted. The principal clue, therefore, to what they once were, and our chief means of explaining much that is obscure in Holy Writ, will be found in the customs of the modern East. And we prepose, in the second part of the present work, to consider all such details of Oriental life as appear to have, in the main, an historical origin. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Orientalisms in Bible Lands: Giving Light From Customs, Habits, Manners, Imagery, Thought and Life in the East for Bible Students The Book through which the one great religion of the world has come to mankind is thoroughly Oriental. Every part of the Bible is saturated with the peculiar traits, modes of thought, customs, manner of speech, and imagery that characterize Eastern life. A knowledge of these is essential to a clear understanding and right interpretation of the Holy Scriptures. Once it was common to speak of the "unchanging East," as scholars and explorers were wont to do in the last generation. For centuries there was indeed a persistence of the same manners and customs, partly due to the physical characteristics of the lands of the East, and partly to the indisposition of the people for change. That day has passed. There is no portion of the globe where such marvelous and radical changes are going on to-day as in the Orient. In Jerusalem, in Joppa, and in Damascus one sees the railway locomotive, hears the click of the telegraph, and may talk to his distant neighbor through the telephone. Soon it will be impossible for a traveler to discover simple native Oriental Life. Even now it is difficult to find a village or people in any Bible land so remote as to be free from the influences of Western life, which are sweeping through all Oriental countries. Native Oriental customs are already modified by these influences to an extent little suspected by many even of the Orientals themselves. Another common view among the "laity" and learned was that the early biblical narratives described human life in a primitive stage. But we now know that Abraham was "comparatively a modem man," scarcely midway between the present and the infancy of the human race.
