Book excerpt: This work presents a concise retelling of the ministry and passion from the perspective of a Roman officer. Excerpt from "An Easter Disciple" "On Scopus, the high mountain north of Jerusalem, the Roman camp was pitched, that last autumn in the ministry of Jesus of Nazareth. A few years further on, if the warriors of the Emperor Tiberius could then have foreseen the future, Titus was to quarter his famous legions on that vantage point; and from its elevation he was to hurl himself as a resistless battering ram against the Holy City. But, on this autumn day, when these chronicles begin, no blare of trumpets was summoning the Roman soldiery to arms; only the feet of the camp sentinels, as they walked their appointed rounds, broke the quiet of the sunlit afternoon."

Download or read book Theology of the New Testament written by Udo Schnelle and published by Baker Academic. This book was released on 2009-11 with total page 912 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For a few decades, jet packs seemed to be everywhere: on Gilligan’s Island, Lost in Space, Thunderball, and even the opening ceremony of the 1984 Olympics. Inventors promised we’d all be flying with them now, enabling us to zoom around effortlessly in the sky and getting us to work without traffic jams and trains. What happened to the jet pack? In The Great American Jet Pack, Steve Lehto gives us the definitive history of this and related devices, explaining how the technology arose, how it works, and why we don’t have them in our garages today. These individual lift devices, as they were blandly labeled by the government men who financed much of their development, answered man’s desire to simply step outside and take flight. No runways, no wings, no pilot’s license were required. Soaring through the air with the wind in your face and landing anyplace there was room to stand—could this be done? Yes, it could be, and it was. But the jet pack was perhaps the most overpromised technology of all time. From the rocket belt to the jet belt to the flying platform and all the way to Yves Rossy’s 21st-century free flights using a jet-powered wing, this book profiles the inventors and pilots, the hucksters and cheats, the businessmen and soldiers who were involved with these machines. And it finally tells a great American story of a technology whose promise may, one day, yet come to fruition.

Download or read book Christology and Discipleship in John 17 written by Marianus Pale Hera and published by Mohr Siebeck. This book was released on 2013 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using the method of literary critical analysis to read the Johannine narrative, Marianus Pale Hera underlines the profound relationship between the Johannine Christology and the Gospel's teaching on discipleship. A narrative reading of selected passages from chapters 1-12 of John (the prologue, Jesus' first disciples, the first sign at Cana, the man born blind, and the I Am sayings) indicates John's tendency to present christological teaching that leads to teaching on discipleship. The reading of these passages also identifies the elements that indicate the christological character of Johannine discipleship. The author's exegesis of John 17 confirms that John's teaching on Christology and discipleship are intimately interrelated to each other. All the elements that indicate the christological character of discipleship are on display in John 17. The author concludes that Christology, which is the center and heartbeat of John's thought, is not an end in itself but leads to discipleship. The twofold message of Christology and discipleship is a distinctive Johannine trait.

Download or read book The Mystery of Easter Saturday written by Chevening St. Botolph's CEP and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2015-05-02 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the Bible we can find out all about Good Friday and Easter Sunday. However, very little was written about the Saturday in between. In Year 6 we decided to try to put ourselves in the place of the people there at the time; and imagine what may have been running through their minds and hearts on Saturday. This is the script for the play Year 6 performed. It is beautifully illustrated with black and white images, reflecting the mood of the piece. It also has Bible study reference notes for people who would like to explore. (This play is written to be performed as a 'Flashmob'; and as such, much of the action takes place within the audience space. However, it can be easily adapted to a more traditional performance.)
