This book was released on 2018-11-26 with total page 946 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Ancient Windsor, Connecticut, Including East Windsor, South Windsor, and Ellington, Prior to 1768, the Date of Their Separation From the Old Town: And Windsor, Bloomfield and Windsor Locks, to the Present Time; Also the Genealogies and Genealogical Notes of Those Families Which Settled Within the Limits of Ancient Windsor, Connecticut, Prior to 1800 These circumstances, however, I would not mention here, were it not in the hope that they might serve to explain and to excuse, What perhaps might seem to others inexcusable faults of omission and commission. The original plan of the work included the history of East and South Windsor and Ellington to the present time. Finding, however, that Dr. H. C. Gillette of South Windsor, had undertaken the history of those towns from the commencement of the Revolution to the present day, and had in deed commenced its publication in the Hartford Times, I relinquished that portion of my intended labor, and contented myself with giving the history of those towns only down to the year 1768, at which time they ceased to be a portion of Ancient Windsor. For the sake of completeness, however, I continued the ecclesiastical history of the east side towns, as well as the genealogies of the families therein, to the present date. This book was released on 2017 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The town of East Windsor, incorporated in 1768, is situated in the center of northern Connecticut, with the Connecticut River as its western border. In the early 1600s, a few settlers crossed the "great river" to establish farms. East Windsor's rich and productive farmland served them well. Five distinct villages, each historically different, highlight the rich and diverse heritage of the town. Warehouse Point, with its proximity to the river, was a vital shipping and transportation hub. Scantic was started by a strong religious community devoted to God and families. Broad Brook had access to the millpond, which spurred the prosperous Broad Brook Company woolen mill. Melrose, established by farming families, is rooted in its agrarian past. Windsorville's location on the banks of Ketch Brook triggered villagers to build a dam and erect mills. Through it all ran the trolley line, which linked the villages and town with the surrounding area.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the Connecticut Book Award (2011) Winner of the Connecticut League of History Organizations Award of Merit (2012) Connecticut women have long been noted for their creation of colorful and distinctive needlework, including samplers and family registers, bed rugs and memorial pictures, crewel-embroidered bed hangings and garments, silk-embroidered pictures of classical or religious scenes, quilted petticoats and bedcovers, and whitework dresses and linens. This volume offers the first regional study, encompassing the full range of needle arts produced prior to 1840. Seventy entries showcase more than one hundred fascinating examples—many never before published—from the Connecticut Historical Society's extensive collection of this early American art form. Produced almost exclusively by women and girls, the needle arts provide an illuminating vantage point for exploring early American women's history and education, including family-based traditions predating the establishment of formal academies after the American Revolution. Extensive genealogical research reveals unseen family connections linking various types of needlework, similar to the multi-generational male workshops documented for other artisan trades, such as woodworking or metalsmithing. Photographs of stitches, reverse sides, sketches, design sources, and related works enhance our understanding and appreciation of this fragile art form and the talented women who created it. An exhibition of needlework in this book will be held at the Connecticut Historical Society in late fall, 2010. Funding for this project has been provided by the Coby Foundation, Ltd., and the National Endowment for the Arts.
