Its story mirrors the development of the education system in the United Kingdom, as the school both responded to and shaped changing national policies. Drawn from the school's extensive log books, photographic records, and interviews with past pupils, this publication provides a rich and colourful insight into the school's journey from a chapel school-room on Oxford's bustling Cowley Road to a diverse, modern primary school.

Book The Archaeology of East Oxford

Download or read book The Archaeology of East Oxford written by OLAF. HAMBROOK BAYER (KATIE. MELLOR, LEIGH.) and published by . This book was released on 2021-01-31 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published by Oxford University in the Thames Valley Landscapes Monograph Series, this volume (no. 43) brings together the work of an award-winning, five-year lottery-funded university/community research project ("Archeox") on the landscape and history of East Oxford, part of the City of Oxford (UK). It documents field and geophysical surveys, archive and collections research, excavations at two Medieval ecclesiastical sites (a leper hospital and a Benedictine nunnery), at a prehistoric pit alignment, together with an extensive campaign of test-pitting which has given new insights into the Roman, Medieval and post-Medieval settlement pattern. The book tells the prehistory and history of a formerly rural area on the eastern outskirts of Oxford which underwent rapid urbanisation after 1850, and is now an integral part of the city. The research plan relied upon engaging and working with the community to participate and to provide access to many study areas, and offered a comprehensive programme of training and education to all those who took part, ensuring that the work done was to an appropriately high standard. It has produced new insights into a number of nationally-important archaeological sites, gained new overviews of the development of the landscape, and brought out from obscurity many under-studied or forgotten finds in local collections. Fundamentally a project which sought to unite university and city, the contemporary story of people and their heritage is a key part of its message. Working in and among some of Oxford's most deprived communities, "Archeox" has been recognised as an exemplar of good practice in breaking down barriers to higher education. Over seven hundred people participated as volunteers, and the project reached many more through outreach and engagement programmes and events. The book is extensively illustrated with many maps, plans and photographs, and is authored by 55 participants in the project, ranging from leading Professors of Archaeology to volunteers who are achieving published work for the first time.

Book Cowley and East Oxford Past and Present

Download or read book Cowley and East Oxford Past and Present written by Malcolm Graham and published by . This book was released on 2001-02-05 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Across Magdalen Bridge and away from the architectural delights of the University City, there exist other areas of Oxford, less picturesque perhaps but each with a fascinating history of its own. St. Clement's developed as a mediaeval suburb which grew suddenly in the early 1800s and became part of Oxford City in 1836. East Oxford, now an extraordinarily cosmopolitan area of the city, was mostly built across open countryside in Victorian times. Cowley, still a quite separate village at the end of the First World War, became a large industrial and residential suburb of Oxford within a decade thanks to William Morris and his burgeoning motor industry. Blackbird Leys was farmland until the 1950s when it became the site for a large housing estate. The development of these contrasting areas is explored through this fine collection of over 230 photographs which compares views dating from the 1820s to the 1970s with their present-day equivalents. Well-known Oxford local historian Malcolm Graham has selected the historic images and his informative captions give a real context to the old and new views. The modern photographs, some revealing massive change, others a surprising degree of continuity, are the work of Laurence Waters, a professional photographer and keen railway historian. Their combined efforts have created a book which will appeal to everyone with an interest in Oxford Town rather than Gown.

Book excerpt: "This comprehensive five-volume work analyzes the archaeological and linguistic data that pertain to the broad cultural milieu of the ancient Near East, the crossroads of three of the world's most influential religions -- Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. Ranging from prehistoric times up to the early centuries of the rise of Islam, the work covers the civilizations of Syria-Palestine, Mesopotamia, Anatolia, Iran, Arabia, Cyprus, Egypt, and the coastal regions of North and East Africa. It includes 1,125 alphabetically arranged entries on sites, languages, material culture, archaeological methods, organizations and institutions, and major excavators and scholars of the field. This one-of-a-kind, accessibly written reference brings new breadth to the study of archaeology in the biblical world, making it a valuable resource not only to scholars and students of archaeology, but also to those with an interest in ancient art and architecture, languages, history, and religion." -- Alibris.com.
