Book Earthquake Engineering for Concrete Dams

Download or read book Earthquake Engineering for Concrete Dams written by Anil K. Chopra and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2020-03-16 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive guide to modern-day methods for earthquake engineering of concrete dams Earthquake analysis and design of concrete dams has progressed from static force methods based on seismic coefficients to modern procedures that are based on the dynamics of dam–water–foundation systems. Earthquake Engineering for Concrete Dams offers a comprehensive, integrated view of this progress over the last fifty years. The book offers an understanding of the limitations of the various methods of dynamic analysis used in practice and develops modern methods that overcome these limitations. This important book: Develops procedures for dynamic analysis of two-dimensional and three-dimensional models of concrete dams Identifies system parameters that influence their response Demonstrates the effects of dam–water–foundation interaction on earthquake response Identifies factors that must be included in earthquake analysis of concrete dams Examines design earthquakes as defined by various regulatory bodies and organizations Presents modern methods for establishing design spectra and selecting ground motions Illustrates application of dynamic analysis procedures to the design of new dams and safety evaluation of existing dams. Written for graduate students, researchers, and professional engineers, Earthquake Engineering for Concrete Dams offers a comprehensive view of the current procedures and methods for seismic analysis, design, and safety evaluation of concrete dams.

Book Numerical Analysis of the Seismic Behavior of Earth Dams

Download or read book Numerical Analysis of the Seismic Behavior of Earth Dams written by Yousef Parish and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2009-08-23 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book deals with an important and complex issue in geotechnical and earthquake engineering, which concerns the influence of both plasticity and pore water pressure on the influence of the seismic response to real earthquake records. Analyses are carried using the software FLAC3D. The book includes three parts: The first chapter presents a literature review of research on earth dams. It presents observation during earthquake loading, the different methods of seismic analysis of earth dams, such as the simplified methods, the empirical methods, the equivalent-linear analyses and the non linear methods. The second chapter presents a numerical analysis of the seismic behaviour of earth dams. Analysis is conducted for the solid phase. It corresponds to the response of the dam before water filling. The third chapter presents a numerical analysis of the influence of the water-skeleton interaction on the response of earth dams to seismic loading. Analysis is conducted first under undrained condition, which corresponds to a simplified analysis of the response of the dam.

Book Response and Stability of Earth Dams During Strong Earthquakes

Download or read book Response and Stability of Earth Dams During Strong Earthquakes written by S. K. Sarma and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This earth dam study considers the response of an earth dam resting on a layer underlain by a rigid base and subjected to a strong ground motion. The dam and the layer are assumed to be elastic, homogeneous, and of simple geometric form. The properties of the dam and the layer may be different. Several combinations of the properties of the dam and the layer, as well as several ratios of the height of the dam to the depth of the layer, are studied. All of these are subjected to nine strong motion acceleration recrods, and their response is calculated. At the same time, seismic coefficients for various sizes of sliding wedges are computed. The results of individual cases and their envelopes are presented in the spectral form for design purposes. Methods of stability analysis for static and pseudostatic conditions are examined, and two new methods are presented. One of these methods is suitable for analyzing existing slip surfaces, and the other for quick computation of the critical acceleration for a given surface. Since pore water pressure developed in the dam during an earthquake is an important factor, a method of stability analysis is developed that takes the excess dynamic pore water pressure into account. The method is based on limit equilibrium principle. Pore water pressures are introduced in the form of dynamic parameter A sub n. The result is obtained in the form of a critical acceleration required to cause failure as a function of the number of cycles of earthquake load.

Book Earthquake Engineering for Concrete Dams

Download or read book Earthquake Engineering for Concrete Dams written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1991-02-01 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The hazard posed by large dams has long been known. Although no concrete dam has failed as a result of earthquake activity, there have been instances of significant damage. Concerns about the seismic safety of concrete dams have been growing recently because the population at risk in locations downstream of major dams continues to expand and because the seismic design concepts in use at the time most existing dams were built were inadequate. In this book, the committee evaluates current knowledge about the earthquake performance of concrete dams, including procedures for investigating the seismic safety of such structures. Earthquake Engineering for Concrete Dams specifically informs researchers about state-of-the-art earthquake analysis of concrete dams and identifies subject areas where additional knowledge is needed.
