Book excerpt: Excerpt from Earth, Sciences, Library The present work comprises a series of monographic studies, together with briefer notes and descriptions, of new or little-known amphibians and reptiles from the Permian deposits of Texas and New Mexico. The material upon which these studies are based was, for the most part, collected during recent years by field parties from the University of Chicago imder the charge of Mr. Paul Miller, assistant curator of paleontology in the University of Chicago, or of myself. The earlier collections of the University from Texas, made by Professor Case, have been discussed by him in various papers, especially in his monograph on the Pelycosauria, published by the Carnegie Institution in 1908. In addition, I am permitted, by the kindness of Professor Schuchert, to include herein the results of the investigations by myself of the Permian collections from New Mexico in the Yale Museum. In order that these results may have a greater homogeneity than they would otherwise I repeat the description of the genus Limnoscelis published in the American Journal of Science for May, 1911, with additions, omissions, and corrections. For the privilege of examining these important collections, so long neglected, and of publishing the results of my studies, I would here express my sincere thanks to Professor Schuchert. Farther on I give some data regarding the the collections of Professor Marsh from these New Mexico regions, and brief notes concerning the New Mexico fauna, as represented in these collections, will be found in the cited paper. I do not repeat them here, since a proposed further exploration of these deposits by Professor Case in conjunction with myself will doubtless furnish much more extensive and accurate information concerning them and their fauna, which will be published later by us. I may also say here that, in the future, it is proposed by Professor Case and myself to publish the results of our investigations of this important fauna, so long neglected, under joint authorship. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new text is presented in a style aimed at drawing students into close engagement with the subject matter, providing a solid education and fostering a sense of wonder and responsibility for God's amazing world. This text is perfect for middle school-aged students. It includes all the popular characteristics of Novare textbooks: smaller profile, vibrant, original, and relevant graphics, lucid conversational prose, and an approach that connects students with real-world science as stewards of God's creation. And of course, Novare's guiding principles of Mastery, Integration, and Kingdom perspective are woven throughout this text. Mastery learning is felt in the way key concepts, definitions, and skills are repeatedly brought up so that students rehearse and reencounter materials with a view toward more thorough retention of course content. We integrate relevant subjects such as mathematics, history, language skills, measurement, and more to both enhance the reading and demonstrate the connections that exist between all subjects. And Novare's Kingdom Perspective is evident in the attribution of the marvels of creation to God's creative power. Author Kevin Nelstead regularly draws the reader to appreciate the intricacy and excellence of God's works, tying in scripture where appropriate. Earth Science should be about much more than learning about rocks and mountains and the seasons. Think about how huge God's mandate to humans is that we are to steward and exhibit vice regency over creation! The best Christian curriculum will bring students into the wonder of God's astounding creation and foster the mind of a gracious and caring steward. Within the context of the fascinating study of landforms, minerals and planetary phenomena, many other timely and important topics are covered including conservation of natural resources, climate change, pollution, environmental justice, and the current scientific consensus concerning geologic history.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Earth Science: A Physiography The introductory chapter gives a general idea of what has hap pened on the earth and what is going on now, so that the pupil is made aware of the aim of the entire subject. This is followed by a study of the materials of which the earth is made, rocks, and of the forces acting upon those materials. Having learned that much, the pupil is in a position to understand how these forces have modified the earth's surface and made it what it is today. The land is studied first, because pupils are more likely to know something about land, to begin with. It is for that reason they find land studies easier than the rest of the subject. This is followed by a short history of the earth, designed to teach the student how the earth came to its present condition. The chapter is optional, but the author feels that many of the better students will be eager to read it. The study of the land will probably occupy the first half of a year. The pupils who have successfully completed the first half will then study the earth's relations in space, seasons, latitude, longitude, time, the atmosphere and associated phenomena like weather and climate. And the year's work is brought to an end by the study of the sea with special emphasis on harbors. The text is printed in type of two sizes: larger type for the essential material and smaller for the Optional. Each chapter has a completion summary which the pupil is required to Copy and complete. This avoids the objection that many teachers have to the ordinary summary: that some pupils read only the summary. The completion summary acts as a self-test, for if the pupil is able to fill in the blanks, he knows that he has learned his lesson and this knowledge carries with it a sense of mastery and hence a feeling of satisfaction. At the end of each chapter are questions on every important point in the text and the teacher may well use these questions as a chief part of his assignment. There is also a set of optional questions which will challenge the best students to extend themselves. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Study of the Earth: Readings in Geological Science We have reason to believe that the earth has been undergoing a long and complex development, proceeding from a comparatively homogeneous and simple structure to one much more complex. Some five billion years ago, there was only a cloud of matter in the form of dust and gas. Later, an earth gradually evolved, and still later oceans, continents, and a primitive atmosphere formed. The first lifelike structure gradually developed, eons ago, from comparatively complex minerals. And a human animal appeared only an instant ago in geologic time, the improbable product of an incredibly long sequence of ancestral events which began with the appropriate-sized cloud at a certain distance from a star.-such are the broad but imperfectly understood outlines of the modern evolutionary View of the world, much of whose development has come through study of the earth. Download or read book The Earth and Its Life Classic Reprint written by A. Waddingham Seers and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-27 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Earth and Its Life No single man, if he spent his life in travel, could hope to gain more than an imperfect knowledge of a small portion of earth's surface. No man, whatever his gifts and industry, could hope to solve a millionth of the problems still unanswered concerning the earth and its life as we know it to-day. No one can say how old it is, yet we know that it is of an age so great that we cannot grasp it. We cannot conceive the slow processes that it passed through before it became a fit abode for life at all, nor the countless succeeding ages during which life was assuming its myriad forms. It took these vast stretches of time and these innumerable stages of development to make the earth and the life on it. The earth itself is the merest speck in the universe. It belongs to a system of which the star we call the sun is the centre; it depends upon the sun for its light and heat and life. The earth and other planets revolve round the sun, and the whole system, the solar system, as we call it, moves through space. The sun is one star. There are countless others. Some of these are centres of light and heat like the sun; others are travelling about in space, cold and dark. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Simple Jography: Or How to Know the Earth and Why It Spins It is a Long Jump from Moses, the author of the First work on Geography, to Peter Simple, - When the acrobatic reader has fetched his breath and looks back at the fearsome list of Geographers he has skipped - Anaximander, Hecatoeus, Demoeritus, Eudoxus, Ephorus, Dicoearchus, Erastothenes, Polybius, Posidonius, James Montieth and Charles F. King, he may well be thankful to find he has fallen upon his feet. Peter Simple is in our midst. His noble features illumine the front of this book -; he marks an Epoch, and yet, dear Reader, we must not imagine that the Science of Geography stops short with Peter Simple. Other geographers will come and go; their task is endless. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Tells the story . . . of how ‘natural philosophers’ developed the ideas of geology accepted today . . . Fascinating.” —San Francisco Book Review Earth has been witness to dinosaurs, global ice ages, continents colliding or splitting apart, and comets and asteroids crashing, as well as the birth of humans who are curious to understand it. But how was all this discovered? How was the evidence for it collected and interpreted? In this sweeping and accessible book, Martin J. S. Rudwick, the premier historian of the Earth sciences, tells the gripping human story of the gradual realization that the Earth’s history has not only been long but also astonishingly eventful. Rudwick begins in the seventeenth century with Archbishop James Ussher, who famously dated the creation of the cosmos to 4004 BC. His narrative later turns to the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, when geological evidence was used—and is still being used—to reconstruct a history of the Earth that is as varied and unpredictable as human history. itself. Along the way, Rudwick rejects the popular view of this story as a conflict between science and religion and shows how the modern scientific account of the Earth’s deep history retains strong roots in Judeo-Christian ideas. Extensively illustrated, Earth’s Deep History is an engaging and impressive capstone to Rudwick’s distinguished career. “Deftly explains how ideas of natural history were embedded in cultural history.” —Nature “An engaging read for nonscientists and specialists alike.” —Library Journal “Wonderfully erudite and absorbing.” —Times Literary Supplement “Fascinating, well written, and novel . . . Essential.” —Choice “Thrilling.” —London Review of Books

Download or read book The Surface History of the Earth Classic Reprint written by John Joly and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-27 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Surface-History of the Earth The Surface History dealt with in this book is based directly upon two great recent advances in our knowledge of the earth's crust: the Radioactivity of the Rocks and Isostasy. The nature of both are herein discussed and explained. Both are recognized to-day by most men of science as facts. These two fundamental elements of the surface constitution of the globe lead naturally to certain great events which at long intervals are recurrent in the history of. The earth's surface. Such are (a) the slow advance of transgressional seas upon the continents; those seas in which the sandstones and limestones, &c., so common over all parts of the land surface, have been laid down (5) the retrogression of those seas taking place after many millions of years and then, finally, (6) the rising of the mountain ranges, built mainly of the sediments which were collected in the depths of the former continental waters. For the genesis of the mountains great lateral as well as vertical forces are required, and these also arise naturally out of those fundamental elements of surface structure: Radioactivity and Isostasy. In the course of this history we recognize eras of tensile crust - stresses changing gradually to eras of compressive stresses. Inter 4124 we find an explanation of the limited scale of the surface relief of the earth; of the causes which have controlled the allocation of land and water upon the globe; and of the major geographical relations of continents and oceans. Download or read book A Geological Manual Classic Reprint written by Henry T. De La Beche and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-10-30 with total page 642 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Geological Manual The Author has availed himself largely of the additions made by M. Von Dechen, with the assistance of the ce lebrated Von Buch and other German geologists, to the German translation of this Work, more particularly as respects the geology of Germany and the lists of or ganie remains. He has not been able to avail himself of any additions to the French translation of the Manual, made under the superintendence of M. Brochant de Vil liers, as it will not appear much before the present edition but the Author is informed that it will contain a further development, by M. Elie dc Beaumont, of his theory of the elevation of mountain chains, as also additions to the lists of organic remains. He has not seen a copy of the American edition of this Work, and is therefore not aware that any additions have been made to it. There can be little doubt that, from a strong desire to find similar organic remains in supposed equivalent de podts, even at great distances, and from an equally strong desire to discover new species, the same organic remains, particularly shells, often figure in our catalogues under two names, while difi'erent species are made to appear as one. Notwithstanding these difficulties, it will, how ever; be evident, from a glance of these catalogues, that a great mass of information has been gradually collected on this subject alone, from which the most important results must follow, even though the various lists may require very considerable correction.
