Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Judith EP. Johnson's haiku are a quiet seam of gold. Time and again she offers finely seen acclamations of the ordinary and everyday, in celebration of the quotidian. She sees the earth not just from the moon, with the distance of objectivity, but also intimately, with subjective touches, from close at hand. These are poems to roll on your tongue, to taste with the heart.' - Michael Dylan Welch, Founder of National Haiku Writing Month

Download or read book Day Moon written by Jan Napier and published by . This book was released on 2020-09-30 with total page 75 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For me, haiku are a bit like an old mirror. Sometimes the glass is rippled or clouded, but any reflection holds its truth. The glass may show an image softened or coloured by its own faults and inclusions, but essence remains unchanged. As writers of haiku we try to show the 'aha moments' we find in our world, but attempt to present them in a way that's different from the way in which they're usually perceived, and in a manner which reveals the generally overlooked loveliness, strangeness or even humour, present in facets of the mundane. Of course, for each reader, different aspects of the image will have more impact than others. To me, the beauty of language is an important part of every successful haiku, as is the element of surprise. The brevity of haiku means that working within the parameters of this form in order to achieve the desired result, is a tremendous challenge. In order to achieve a 'haiku mind,' it is necessary to move through our days with a heightened sense of awareness, plus an openness to environment and nature which is not generally present in everyday dealings with the world around us. This I have tried to do. Jan Napier

Book Haiku in English The First Hundred Years

Download or read book Haiku in English The First Hundred Years written by Philip Rowland and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2013-08-26 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first anthology to map the full range of haiku in the English tradition. Haiku in English is an anthology of more than 800 brilliantly chosen poems that were originally written in English by over 200 poets from around the world. Although haiku originated as a Japanese art form, it has found a welcome home in the English-speaking world. This collection tells the story for the first time of Anglophone haiku, charting its evolution over the last one hundred years and placing it within its historical and literary context. It features an engaging introduction by former U.S. poet laureate Billy Collins and an insightful historical overview by leading haiku poet, editor, and publisher Jim Kacian. The selections range from the first fully realized haiku in English, Ezra Pound’s “In a Station of the Metro,” to plentiful examples by haiku virtuosos such as John Wills, Marlene Mountain, Nick Virgilio, and Raymond Roseliep, and to investigations into the genre by eminent poets like John Ashbery, Allen Ginsberg, and Seamus Heaney. The editors explore the genre’s changing forms and themes, highlighting its vitality and its breadth of poetic styles and content. Among the many poems on offer are organic form experiments by E. E. Cummings and Michael McClure, evocations of black culture by Richard Wright and Sonia Sanchez, and the seminal efforts of Jack Kerouac.

Book Parts of the Moon

Download or read book Parts of the Moon written by John E. O'Connor and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A collection of haiku and senryu. Christchurch poet, editor, critic, and winner of the open and haiku sections of the 2006 New Zealand Poetry Society International Poetry Competition, John O'Connor is arguably one of New Zealand's finest contemporary poets. Acknowledged internationally for his work in haiku, senryu and related forms, his haiku have been anthologised and published in eight languages. With this selection, drawn from the best of his published and unpublished work, the specificity of voice and images demonstrate O'Connor's stature as haiku master with a particular antipodean sense of season and place. For those who seek to push the boundaries of the craft or to return to the origins of the written form in symbols and hieroglyphs, O'Connor's brief and concluding essay, Technology and Verse, discusses the application of graphic words (computer graphics) in haiku, as evidenced in some of the haiku herein. And for those who know and appreciate the haiku moment, the insights and apprehensions of this collection will resonate long after the book is closed.

Book Japanese Death Poems

  • Author :
  • Publisher : Tuttle Publishing
  • Release : 1998-04-15
  • ISBN : 146291649X
  • Pages : 368 pages

Download or read book Japanese Death Poems written by and published by Tuttle Publishing. This book was released on 1998-04-15 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A wonderful introduction the Japanese tradition of jisei, this volume is crammed with exquisite, spontaneous verse and pithy, often hilarious, descriptions of the eccentric and committed monastics who wrote the poems." --Tricycle: The Buddhist Review Although the consciousness of death is, in most cultures, very much a part of life, this is perhaps nowhere more true than in Japan, where the approach of death has given rise to a centuries-old tradition of writing jisei, or the "death poem." Such a poem is often written in the very last moments of the poet's life. Hundreds of Japanese death poems, many with a commentary describing the circumstances of the poet's death, have been translated into English here, the vast majority of them for the first time. Yoel Hoffmann explores the attitudes and customs surrounding death in historical and present-day Japan and gives examples of how these have been reflected in the nation's literature in general. The development of writing jisei is then examined--from the longing poems of the early nobility and the more "masculine" verses of the samurai to the satirical death poems of later centuries. Zen Buddhist ideas about death are also described as a preface to the collection of Chinese death poems by Zen monks that are also included. Finally, the last section contains three hundred twenty haiku, some of which have never been assembled before, in English translation and romanized in Japanese.
