Book Early Yorkshire Charters Vol 1 of 4

Download or read book Early Yorkshire Charters Vol 1 of 4 written by William Farrer and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03 with total page 552 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Early Yorkshire Charters, Vol. 1 of 4: Being a Collection of Documents Anterior to the Thirteenth Century Made From the Public Records, Monastic Chartularies, Roger Dodsworth's Manuscripts and Other Available Sources The approximate time of issue of the undated documents has been estimated from material supplied by internal evi dence of the participation of, reference to, or attestation by officers or clerics whose period of office is known; as also of the succession, survival, or death of individuals named in the document by information obtained from the sheriffs' rolls, the chronicles, or contemporary records. In a few instances the reference to some recent political or religious event has supplied a close date. A royal, papal, or episcopal confirmation has frequently provided a downward limit of time for the particular grant which it confirmed. There may be instances in which the approximate date can be fixed more closely than I have been able to fix it, or may require to be amended through the help which will be afforded by the index or by some document which I have neglected to use. The critical reader will be well advised to test all dates by the collective evidence of the completed work, and by such as may not have been at my disposition. The number of acres for the bovate varied considerably in Normanby' a bovate of 15 acres was made up of 6 acres and 3 perches. Download or read book Researching Local History written by Stuart A Raymond and published by Pen and Sword Family History. This book was released on 2022-09-08 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How has the place we live in changed, developed, and grown over the centuries? That is the basic question local historians seek to answer. The answer is to be found in the sources of information that previous generations have left us. The records of parish, county, and diocesan administration, of the courts, of the national government, and of private estates, all have something to tell us about the history of the locality we are interested in. So do old newspapers and other publications. All of these sources are readily available, but many have been little used. Local historians come from a wide diversity of backgrounds. But whether you are a student researching a dissertation, a family historian interested in the wider background history of your family, a teacher, a librarian, an archivist, an academic, or are merely interested in the history of your own area, this book is for you. If you want to research local history, you need a detailed account of the myriad sources readily available. This book provides a comprehensive overview of those sources, and its guidance will enable you to explore and exploit their vast range. It poses the questions which local historians ask, and identifies the specific sources likely to answer those questions.
