Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this two-volume set, Volume I is arranged by grooms, Volume II arranged by brides. There are approximately 57,000 marriages (114,000 names), including all extant antebellum records from West Tennessee. All pre-1861 marriages are set forth and, where feasible and convenient (primarily because of cutoff dates of the original books), the authors have also included many later records as well. The information in the Brides Book (Volume II), is a duplication of that in the Grooms, the difference being in the order in which they appear. Each volume is a single area-wide alphabetical listing of the records. Each entry includes the names of the bride and groom, the date the marriage license was issued, the date the marriage was solemnized, and the county in which the marriage was executed. Following are the counties that are the subject of this work, followed by the years represented: Benton 1832-1869, Carroll 1838-1873, Dyer 1860-1879, Fayette 1838-1871, Gibson 1824-1870, Hardeman 1823-1861, Haywood 1859-1878, Henry 1838-1867, Lauderdale 1838-1867, Madison 1823-1871, McNairy 1861-1865, Obion 1824-1877, Shelby 1819-1865, Tipton 1840-1874, and Weakley 1840-1874. The two-volume set, Early East Tennessee Marriages, two volumes, and another two-volume set, Early Middle Tennessee Marriages, are also available from the publisher.

These marriage notices cover the ENTIRE state of Tennessee for the most part, beginning with the earliest ones in 1794 in the Knoxville Gazette. The total number of such marriage notices is approximately 12,000 or more and contains such information as: name of bride's father, often times both bride and groom's place of residence (county and state); sometimes the groom's occupation; date of marriage and where it was performed and sometimes the officiating minister's name; ages of Bride and Groom. A brief resume of states other than Tennessee where such marriages were performed or the former home of either the bride or groom: AL, AR, CT, FL, KY, MS, MO, MD, LA, IA, IN, IL, NY, NC, NJ, OH, PA, SC, VT, WV, & VA to cite but a few. Through these literate, perceptive, and illuminating letters, readers can trace Lt. William Cowper Nelson's evolution from an idealistic young soldier to a battle-hardened veteran. Nelson joined the army at the age of nineteen, leaving behind a close-knit family in Holly Springs, Mississippi. He served for much of the war in the Third Corps of Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia. By the end of the conflict, Nelson had survived many major battles, including Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, and the Wilderness, as well as the long siege of Petersburg. In his correspondence, Nelson discusses in detail the soldier's life, religion in the ranks, his love for and heartbreak at being separated from his family, and Southern identity. Readers will find his reflections on slavery, religion, and the Confederacy particularly revealing. Seeing and participating in the slaughter of other human beings overpowered Nelson's romantic idealism. He had long imagined war as a noble struggle of valor, selflessness, and glory. But the sight of wounded men with "blood streaming from their wounds," dying slow, lonely deaths showed Nelson the true nature of war. Nelson's letters reveal the conflicting emotions that haunted many soldiers. Despite his bitter hatred of the "ruthless invaders of our beloved South," the sight of wounded Union prisoners moved him to compassion. Nelson's ability to write about irreconcilable moments when he felt both kindness and cruelty toward the enemy with introspection, candor, and sensitivity makes The Hour of Our Nation's Agony more than just a collection of missives. Jennifer Ford places Nelson squarely in the middle of the historiographic debate over the degree of disillusionment felt by Civil War soldiers, arguing that Nelson-like many soldiers-was a complex individual who does not fit neatly into one interpretation. Jennifer W. Ford is head of special collections and associate professor at the J. D. Williams Library at the University of Mississippi, where the where the collection containing Lt. Nelson's letters and other family documents is held.
