Book Badon and the Early Wars for Wessex circa 500 to 710

Download or read book Badon and the Early Wars for Wessex circa 500 to 710 written by David Cooper and published by Pen and Sword. This book was released on 2018-07-30 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: David Coopers book reappraises the evidence regarding the early battles for Wessex territory. It charts the sequence of battles from the c. AD 500 siege of Badon Hill, in which the Britons defeated the first Saxon attempt to gain a foothold in Wessex territory, to Langport in 710, which consolidated King Ine's position and pushed the Britons westwards. Discussion of the post-Roman British and Germanic factions provides context and background to Badon Hill, which is then covered in detail and disentangled from Arthurian legend. In considering how the opposing commanders are likely to have planned their campaigns, enduring principles of military doctrine and tactics are discussed, using examples from other periods to illustrate how these principles applied in Dark Ages Britain. Going on to follow subsequent campaigns of the West Saxons in southern Britain, a credible assessment is made of how these resulted in the establishment of a viable Wessex kingdom, two centuries after Badon. Grounded in the latest academic and archaeological evidence, David Cooper offers a number of new insights and ideas.

The sources from which these studies have been drawn are Open to anyone who cares to hunt them up, and we have done our best to indicate them. Our only claim in this respect is that we have tried to read existing material in the light of later research in an attempt to bring what may be old discussions up to date. Except in the pages of Professor W. G. Collingwood's Scandi navian Britain, where the matter is dealt with as part of a wider subject', we are not aware of any study of the Scandinavian invasions of Western England on which some special knowledge of northern antiquities has been brought to bear, and it is possible that we may have been able to throw some fresh light from the northern point of view on the events of a critical stage of English History. Book The Viking Wars

    Book Details:
  • Author : Max Adams
  • Publisher : Simon and Schuster
  • Release : 2018-08-07
  • ISBN : 1681778440
  • Pages : 474 pages

Download or read book The Viking Wars written by Max Adams and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2018-08-07 with total page 474 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A history of Britain in the violent and unruly era between the first Scandinavian raids in 789 and the final expulsion of the Vikings from York in 954. In 865, a great Viking army landed in East Anglia, precipitating a series of wars that would last until the middle of the following century. It was in this time of crisis that the modern kingdoms of Britain were born. In their responses to the Viking threat, these kingdoms forged their identities as hybrid cultures: vibrant and entrepreneurial peoples adapting to instability and opportunity. Traditionally, Alfred the Great is cast as the central player in the story of Viking Age Britain. But Max Adams, while stressing the genius of Alfred as war leader, law-giver, and forger of the English nation, has a more nuanced narrative approach to this conventional version of history. The Britain encountered by the Scandinavians of the ninth and tenth centuries was one of regional diversity and self-conscious cultural identities, depicted in glorious narrative fashion in The Viking Wars.

Book Fortifications in Wessex c 800 1066

Download or read book Fortifications in Wessex c 800 1066 written by Ryan Lavelle and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2012-10-20 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The defence of the 9th-century kingdom of Wessex under King Alfred against the 'Great Viking Army' is one of the major military achievements of Early Medieval history. While the guerrilla warfare in the Somerset marshes and the battle of Edington are characteristic of Alfred's military abilities, his definitive physical achievement was a series of some 30 well-structured fortifications (known as burhs) across the kingdom. Many of these fortifications survive to this day and some were even reinforced to stand up to German tanks in the expected invasion of 1940. This title describes their beginnings in the turbulent early years of Alfred's reign as well as their subsequent development and use.

Book World Military History Bibliography

Download or read book World Military History Bibliography written by Barton Hacker and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2003-06-01 with total page 847 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Preclassical and indigenous nonwestern military institutions and methods of warfare are the chief subjects of this annotated bibliography of work published 1967–1997. Classical antiquity, post-Roman Europe, and the westernized armed forces of the 20th century, although covered, receive less systematic attention. Emphasis is on historical studies of military organization and the relationships between military and other social institutions, rather than wars and battles. Especially rich in references to the periodical literature, the bibliography is divided into eight parts: (1) general and comparative topics; (2) the ancient world; (3) Eurasia since antiquity; (4) sub-Saharan Africa and Oceania; (5) pre-Columbian America; (6) postcontact America; (7) the contemporary nonwestern world; and (8) philosophical, social scientific, natural scientific, and other works not primarily historical.

Download or read book Alfred s Wars written by Ryan Lavelle and published by Boydell Press. This book was released on 2012 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Although this book provides a selection from sources and interpretations of warfare in Viking-Age England, and presents a consideration of them, it is more than a purely historiographical study. It investigates the current state of scholarship and the key points of its development, indicating areas for enquiry and point out some less familiar sources along the way. The intention is not to deal with the canon of historical works on the Anglo-Saxon army, for remarkably there is no 'canon' as such. Much, though by no means all, scholarship on the organization of military systems in the Anglo-Saxon state has been undertaken by historians and scholars from related disciplines for whom warfare is not a primary concern. Many of the sources used will be familiar to students of early medieval England, but others are included because they are less often considered ... I have not attempted to use a chronological structure, nor have I retold any particular narrative history of the English Kingdom during the Viking Age, although for the reader's convenience a chronology of events is included as an appendix. The focus is rather the exploration of the practice and politics of warfare."--Preface.
