Book Early Time Decay of Fission Product Mixtures Iv Gamma Ionization Chamber Measurements Following Thermal Neutron Fission of Pu 239

Download or read book Early Time Decay of Fission Product Mixtures Iv Gamma Ionization Chamber Measurements Following Thermal Neutron Fission of Pu 239 written by P. O. STROM and published by . This book was released on 1961 with total page 1 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: DESCRIPTORS: (*Gamma rays, *Ionization chambers, Measurement following *Thermal neutrons, *Fission of *Plutonium, Radio active isotopes, Isotopic cross section.) (Radiochemistry, Analysis, Radioactive decay, Gamma emission.) (Test reactors, Nuclear reactions, Experimental data, Tables.) Gamma ionization chamber readings are given for the products of thermal neutron fission of Pu-239 for the period from 1 second to about 22 hours following fission. Using spectral data on U-235 fission products and ionization chamber efficieny with gamma energy, the energy release rate of Pu-239 fission products is determined as a function of time. The results are compared with those attained for U-235 fission products. (Author).

Book The Effect of Radionuclide Fractionation on the Normalization Factor for Fallout Fields

Download or read book The Effect of Radionuclide Fractionation on the Normalization Factor for Fallout Fields written by G. R. Crocker and published by . This book was released on 1965 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report compares the normalization factor, r/hr per kt/mi]2, calculated for unfractionated fission products with the normalization factors calculated from field data for a near-surface silicate soil burst and a silicate soil cratering burst. The large discrepancies between predicted and observed values appear to be caused by a combination of radionuclide fractionation, ground roughness and instrument self-shielding, and gradient effects. Fractionation effects can cause a difference of a factor of five in the normalization factors for surface and cratering bursts, allowing about 50% reduction in radiation due to ground roughness and instrument self-shielding. Ionization-chamber measurements on field-collected samples are correlated with their degree of fractionation in this report, and a reasonable correspondence between the ionization-chamber readings and the exposure rates measured in the field is established.

Book Radioactive Fallout after Nuclear Explosions and Accidents

Download or read book Radioactive Fallout after Nuclear Explosions and Accidents written by Y.A. Izrael and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2002-06-20 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To achieve successful solutions to the problems resulting from local, distant and global radioactive fallout after nuclear explosions and accidents and to achieve successful retrospective analyses of the radiation conditions from recent observations, certain information is needed: the distribution of the exposure dose rate in the atmosphere and in a country; the distribution of radionuclides in natural environments and the nuclide composition of the radioactive fallout; the features of formation of the aerosol particle-carriers of the radioactivity and of the nuclide distribution of the particles of different sizes formed under different conditions; the processes involved in the migration of radioactive products in different zones and environments; the external and internal effects of nuclear radiation on human beings. This monograph is devoted to a number of these problems, namely, to studies of the radioactive fallout composition, the formation of the aerosol particles that transport the radioactive products and to the analysis of the external radiation doses resulting from nuclear explosions and/or accidents. Problems of restoration and rehabilitation of contaminated land areas are also touched upon in the monograph. To solve such problems one requires knowledge of the mobility of radionuclides, an understanding of their uptake by plants, their transportation within the food chain and finally their uptake by animal and/or human organisms. The results of many years of study of radioactive fallout from atmospheric and underground nuclear explosions and accidents are summarized in this book. It is intended for various specialists - geophysicists, ecologists, health experts and inspectors, as well as those who are concerned with radioactive contamination of natural environments.

Book Computational Methods in Reactor Shielding

Download or read book Computational Methods in Reactor Shielding written by James Wood and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Computational Methods in Reactor Shielding deals with the mathematical processes involved in how to effectively control the dangerous effect of nuclear radiation. Reactor shielding is considered an important aspect in the operation of reactor systems to ensure the safety of personnel and others that can be directly or indirectly affected. Composed of seven chapters, the book discusses ionizing radiation and how it aids in the control and containment of radioactive substances that are considered harmful to all living things. The text also outlines the necessary radiation quantities and units that are needed for a systemic control of shielding and presents an examination of the main sources of nuclear radiation. A discussion of the gamma photon cross sections and an introduction to BMIX, a computer program used in illustrating a technique in identifying the gamma ray build-up factor for a reactor shield, are added. The selection also discusses various mathematical representations and areas of shielding theory that are being used in radiation shielding. The book is of great value to those involved in the development and implementation of systems to minimize and control the dangerous and lethal effect of radiation.
