Book excerpt: First published in 1985, this ground-breaking book surveys the development of Cycladic sculpture produced by unidentified artists who worked in the Aegean islands forty-five hundred years ago. Newly revised and updated, this book is a concise introduction to the field.

Book Personal Styles in Early Cycladic Sculpture

Download or read book Personal Styles in Early Cycladic Sculpture written by Pat Getz-Gentle and published by University of Wisconsin Pres. This book was released on 2013-08-13 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Annotation "Personal Styles in Early Cycladic Sculpture represents the culmination of thirty-five years of study. Pat Getz-Gentle offers here much new material and many fresh insights into a tradition, rooted in the Neolithic period, that spanned most of the third millennium B.C. She begins with a review of this tradition, placing particular emphasis on the stages leading to the reclining figure with folded arms that is the unique and quintessential icon of the early Bronze Age culture at the center of the Aegean. She then focuses on the styles of fifteen sculptors, several of whom are identified and discussed for the first time in this volume. By introducing little-known pieces attributable to these sculptors, she illuminates various phases of their artistic development."--BOOK JACKET. Book Making and Moving Sculpture in Early Modern Italy

Download or read book Making and Moving Sculpture in Early Modern Italy written by KelleyHelmstutler DiDio and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, art historians have begun to delve into the patronage, production and reception of sculptures-sculptors' workshop practices; practical, aesthetic, and esoteric considerations of material and materiality; and the meanings associated with materials and the makers of sculptures. This volume brings together some of the top scholars in the field, to investigate how sculptors in early modern Italy confronted such challenges as procurement of materials, their costs, shipping and transportation issues, and technical problems of materials, along with the meanings of the usage, hierarchies of materials, and processes of material acquisition and production. Contributors also explore the implications of these facets in terms of the intended and perceived meaning(s) for the viewer, patron, and/or artist. A highlight of the collection is the epilogue, an interview with a contemporary artist of large-scale stone sculpture, which reveals the similar challenges sculptors still encounter today as they procure, manufacture and transport their works.

Book The Lives of Sumerian Sculpture

Download or read book The Lives of Sumerian Sculpture written by Jean M. Evans and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2012-10-08 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the sculptures created during the Early Dynastic period (2900–2350 BC) of Sumer, a region corresponding to present-day southern Iraq. Featured almost exclusively in temple complexes, some 550 Early Dynastic stone statues of human figures carved in an abstract style have survived. Chronicling the intellectual history of ancient Near Eastern art history and archaeology at the intersection of sculpture and aesthetics, this book argues that the early modern reception of Sumer still influences ideas about these sculptures. Engaging also with the archaeology of the Early Dynastic temple, the book ultimately considers what a stone statue of a human figure has signified, both in modern times and in antiquity.

Book Sculpture of Angkor and Ancient Cambodia

Download or read book Sculpture of Angkor and Ancient Cambodia written by National Gallery of Art (U.S.) and published by Thames & Hudson. This book was released on 1997 with total page 381 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The thousand-year artistic legacy of Cambodia includes some of the world's mostbeautiful works of art and architecture. This richly illustrated volume, published to coincide with an exhibition organized by the National Gallery of Art and the Réunion des Musées Nationnaux, examines the powerful and original Khmer culture that flourished on the mainland of Southeast Asia between 600 and 1600 A.D. Centered on the northern shores of Cambodia's Great Lake, the Tonle Sap, and extending westward into eastern Thailand, the civilization reached its apogee in the early twelfth century with the construction of the Temple of Angkor. Embracing both Buddhist and Hindu traditions, the sculpture ranges from monumental works in sandstone representing gods and goddesses, guardians, female dancers, and legendary creatures, to refined ritual and ceremonial bronzes. Essays by an international group of scholars together with narrative discussions of each of the works illustrated provide a fascinating introduction to a culture that is still relatively unknown.

Book History of Early Stone Sculpture at Mathura ca 150 BCE 100 CE

Download or read book History of Early Stone Sculpture at Mathura ca 150 BCE 100 CE written by Sonya Rhie Quintanilla and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2007-03-15 with total page 538 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume provides the first comprehensive analysis and chronology of the earliest known stone sculptures from the north Indian city of Mathura, dating prior to the famous Kushan period. It includes numerous new attributions of objects based primarily on epigraphic and visual analysis. The sculptures attributable to these pre-Kushan periods reveal new evidence for the reasons behind the emergence of the anthropomorphic image of the Buddha at Mathura, the predominance of a heterodox sect of Jainism, and the proliferation of cults of nature divinities. This book provides a wealth of reference material useful for historians of early Indian art, religion, and epigraphy. The book is illustrated with over three hundred photographs, and it includes epigraphic appendices with complete transcriptions and updated translations.
