Book Early Religious History of Maryland

Download or read book Early Religious History of Maryland written by Brown B F (Benjamin F ) and published by Legare Street Press. This book was released on 2023-07-18 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this groundbreaking work, B.F. Brown challenges the traditional view of Maryland as a haven of religious freedom and tolerance. Drawing on historical records and primary sources, Brown argues that the reality of early religious life in Maryland was more complex and conflicted than is commonly believed, and that the story of religious tolerance in America is far from straightforward. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Early Religious History of Maryland: Maryland Not a Roman Catholic Colony, Religious Toleration Not an Act of Roman Catholic Legislation, Being the Substance of a Lecture Delivered Before the Guild of All Saints Church, Baltimore The perversions of history which come before us with all the assurance of truth, are both hurtful and difficult of correction. They mislead successive generations, deceiving their judgment and shaping their action. Tradition and myth form a large part of what men call history; and human selfishness, credulity, and prejudice, transmute them into the solidity of well-accredited facts. No sphere of human thought is so prolific of such misleading as the religious history of individuals and nations. Often the opinion of many generations respecting some historical character or action is utterly away from the truth; because ignorance or prejudice has misstated the facts of the case; and most persons are content to accept the current view, without questioning its accuracy. In this way history is manufactured from falsehood or fancy, while frequent and confident repetition of the same lie will often silence the timid remonstrant, and confirm in error the doubtful questioner. The good people of Maryland, in common with a large part of our whole nation, and thinking people everywhere, have been accustomed to receive, as an unquestionable fact, an assertion respecting the early history of Maryland, its settlement and government, which has no foundation in point of fact; yet has been used to mislead the ignorant, and silence the honest inquirer after truth. The error in question has been incorporated into our school-books, asserted in our newspapers, reiterated by politicians, in the interest of partisan discussion, and preached from pulpit and rostrum, until nearly our whole people give it credence, and regard the man who would call it in question as either wanting in knowledge, or blinded by prejudice. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How early American Catholics justified secularism and overcame suspicions of disloyalty, transforming ideas of religious liberty in the process. In colonial America, Catholics were presumed dangerous until proven loyal. Yet Catholics went on to sign the Declaration of Independence and helped to finalize the First Amendment to the Constitution. What explains this remarkable transformation? Michael Breidenbach shows how Catholic leaders emphasized their churchÕs own traditionsÑrather than Enlightenment liberalismÑto secure the religious liberty that enabled their incorporation in American life. Catholics responded to charges of disloyalty by denying papal infallibility and the popeÕs authority to intervene in civil affairs. Rome staunchly rejected such dissent, but reform-minded Catholics justified their stance by looking to conciliarism, an intellectual tradition rooted in medieval Catholic thought yet compatible with a republican view of temporal independence and church-state separation. Drawing on new archival material, Breidenbach finds that early American Catholic leaders, including Maryland founder Cecil Calvert and members of the prominent Carroll family, relied on the conciliarist tradition to help institute religious toleration, including the Maryland Toleration Act of 1649. The critical role of Catholics in establishing American churchÐstate separation enjoins us to revise not only our sense of who the American founders were, but also our understanding of the sources of secularism. ChurchÐstate separation in America, generally understood as the product of a Protestant-driven Enlightenment, was in key respects derived from Catholic thinking. Our Dear-Bought Liberty therefore offers a dramatic departure from received wisdom, suggesting that religious liberty in America was not bestowed by liberal consensus but partly defined through the ingenuity of a persecuted minority.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Maryland: The Land of Sanctuary; A History of Religious Toleration in Maryland From the First Settlement Until the American Revolution The present volume is most welcome. The history of our State, especially during the colonial era, bears a close relation to the Catholic Church whose infancy in the United States was cradled in the "Land of Sanctuary." A narrative of those events which helped or retarded the growth of religious liberty on the soil where it was first planted and developed under Catholic auspices, comes most fittingly from a Catholic author, especially from one whose forefathers settled in the Province under the government of the first Proprietary, and, notwithstanding the trials to which Catholics were, subjected, were ever loyal to their faith. The Rev. William T. Russell, of the Cathedral, the author, has for the last three years been engaged in writing the work which is now offered to the public. He is possessed of the judicial temper so essential for historical accuracy, and having carefully weighed in the balance every controverted point has given his decision with calm and dispassionate judgment. Book excerpt: In the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, to be English and Catholic was to face persecution, financial penalties, and sometimes death. Yet some English Catholics prospered, reconciling their faith and loyalty to their country. Among the most prominent was George Calvert, a talented and ambitious man who successfully navigated the politics of court and became secretary of state under King James I. A conforming Protestant from the age of twelve, Calvert converted back to Catholicism when a political crisis forced him to resign his position in 1625. The king rewarded Calvert by naming him Baron of Baltimore in Ireland. Insulated by wealth, with the support of powerful friends, and no longer occupied with court business, Baltimore sought to exploit his land grants in Ireland and Newfoundland. Seeking to increase his own fortune and status while enlarging the king's dominions, he embarked on a series of colonial enterprises that eventually led to Maryland. The experiences of Calvert and his heirs foster our understanding of politics and faith in Jacobean England. They also point to one of the earliest codifications of religious liberty in America, for in founding Maryland, Calvert and his son Cecil envisioned a prosperous society based on freedom of conscience. In English and Catholic, John D. Krugler traces the development of the "Maryland Designe," the novel solution the Calverts devised to resolve the conflict of loyalty they faced as English Catholics. In doing so, Krugler places the founding and early history of Maryland in the context of pervasive anxieties in England over identity, allegiance, and conscience. Explaining the evolution of the Calvert vision, Krugler ties together three main aspects of George Calvert's career: his nationalism and enthusiasm for English imperialism; his aim to find fortune and fame; and his deepening sense of himself as a Catholic. Skillfully told here, the story of the Calverts' bold experiment in advancing freedom of conscience is also the story of the roots of American liberty. -- Jerome de Groot
