Book Medieval Philosophy Classic Reprint

Download or read book Medieval Philosophy Classic Reprint written by Frederick Charles Copleston and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-25 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Medieval Philosophy But medieval philosophy deserves attention and study not only for historical reasons, because it forms an integral part of the history of European philosophy, but also for its own sake. Although the approach and the setting may be different in different periods, the same, or at least similar, philosophical problems inevitably tend to recur. And even though philosophy is not equivalent to the accumulation of particular facts or items of knowledge which increase in number as the years go on, one is not entitled to assume in advance that the medieval discussions of philosophical problems are worthless, simply be cause they took place so many centuries ago. Some philosophers would, indeed, say that the methods and aims of the thirteenth-century metaphysicians were mistaken. But that, whether true or false, is a philosophic assertion which is itself Open to question. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book History of Medieval Philosophy Vol 1 written by Maurice De Wulf and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-24 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Medieval Philosophy, Vol. 1: From the Beginnings to the End of the Twelfth Century Throughout, De Wulf has defended the following views. First, he holds that in the Middle Ages there was a Scholastic Philosophy, distinct from Scholastic Theology. No-one questions that to-day, but it was a new idea when De Wulf first put it forward. The second point is that, in the Scholastic Philosophy of the Middle Ages, we can trace a common doctrine, which he calls the Scholastic Patrimony, and of which Thomism was only one form. This idea has met with more criticism than the other, but De Wulf has, in our opinion, successfully vindicated it. Thirdly, in the later editions of his work, De Wulf has brought out the close relations existing between Scholastic Philosophy and the development of civilization and art in medieval times. He has set forth these ideas in greater detail in a separate work, based on lectures he gave at the University of Princeton, and published there under the title Philosophy and Civilisation in the Middle Ages.
