Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Oscillating between the majesty of the Greco-Byzantine tradition and the modernity predicted by Giotto, Early Italian Painting addresses the first important aesthetic movement that would lead to the Renaissance, the Italian Primitives. Trying new mediums and techniques, these revolutionary artists no longer painted frescos on walls, but created the first mobile paintings on wooden panels. The faces of the figures were painted to shock the spectator in order to emphasise the divinity of the character being represented. The bright gold leafed backgrounds were used to highlight the godliness of the subject. The elegance of both line and colour were combined to reinforce specific symbolic choices. Ultimately the Early Italian artists wished to make the invisible visible. In this magnificent book, the authors emphasise the importance that the rivalry between the Sienese and Florentine schools played in the evolution of art history. The reader will discover how the sacred began to take a more human form through these forgotten masterworks, opening a discrete but definitive door through the use of anthropomorphism, a technique that would be cherished by the Renaissance.

Book excerpt: Certain Italian fresco cycles, notably the Brancacci Chapel in Florence by Masaccio, Masolino, and Filippino Lippi, are well known. Others, such as Piero della Francesca's work in Arezzo and Benozzo Gozzoli's Chapel of the Magi in Florence, have been reproduced countless times. Yet no publisher - until now - has attempted to gather together and document in extensive photographs the essential fresco cycles of the early Italian Renaissance. The list of works covers the regions of Italy, from the Alpine mountain areas to Puglia, with an emphasis on Tuscany and Florence, the artistic center that gave life to the Renaissance. Italian Frescoes: The Early Renaissance, 1400-1470 opens with a concise introductory text discussing various aspects of fifteenth-century fresco painting: artists, patronage, cultural and historical conditions, technical methods, and questions of local tradition. The central section of the book examines twenty-one fresco cycles, each representing a crowning achievement in this field. A descriptive and interpretive essay introduces each cycle and is followed by a series of full-page and double-page color plates - many of them new photography of recently restored frescoes - covering the entire work.

Book Early Italian Painting

Download or read book Early Italian Painting written by Edward B. Garrison and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Edward Garrison's work on early Italian panels resulted in the publication in 1949 of the first comprehensive index of Romanesque Italian panel painting, which remains the standard work of reference on the subject. Subsequently, his four-volume Studies in the History of Medieval Italian Painting, published in Florence between 1953 and 1962, represents the most considerable body of research yet published on Italian miniature and panel painting from the eleventh to the thirteenth centuries. These two volumes collect together all the author's articles on Italian fresco and panel painting which have been published in art-historical journals since 1945. This provides both an indispensable supplement to the author's earlier Studies in the History of Medieval Italian Painting, and in including three successive Addenda to his Index of Italian Romanesque Panel Paintings, also serves the function of updating the earlier publications.

Book Studies in the History of Medieval Italian Painting

Download or read book Studies in the History of Medieval Italian Painting written by Edward B. Garrison and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The four volumes of Edward Garrison's Studies, published between 1953 and 1962, represented a landmark in the study of medieval Italian painting. They made available for the first time photographs of all miniatures of the region and period concerned - principally the former Papal States and Tuscany in the twelfth century - which the author was able to track down, along with a generous selection of ornamental initials from almost every decorated manuscript he examined. The contemporary wall-paintings and panels from these regions are also illustrated and discussed. They represent one of the most valuable sources of information about twelfth-century painting in existence, and everyone interested in European art of that period has at some time found himself gratefully using them. A serious attempt has been made to get all this material into order, and the general lines of development have been set out. Together with the author's two volumes already published in our Selected Studies Series (Early Italian Painting: Selected Studies, Vols. I & II) these four volumes make available the complete corpus of Edward Garrison's work on medieval Italian painting. The two principal studies are concerned with 'Twelfth-Century Initial Styles of Central Italy' (serialized here in eleven sections) and 'Twelfth-Century Umbro-Roman painting' (serialized in six sections). Most of the non-serialized items are studies of individual manuscripts, but one should note the presence here of Supplements IV-VI to Garrison's Italian Romanesque Panel-painting: an index (Nos. I-III are available in Early Italian Painting: Selected Studies. Vol. I). The reprinting of these four volumes should be particularly welcome to art-historians, since they were originally issued in fascicule form, and many art-historical libraries lack copies.

The painter's Flagellation of Christ (Frick Collection, New York) and Virgin and Child Enthroned with Two Angels (National Gallery, London) were once part of a larger work, possibly a commission of Franciscan origin. Exhibited with the two panels are other examples of Italian devotional art of the late 13th and early 14th centuries from New York collections.

Book Fra Angelico

  • Author : Jacqueline Guillaud
  • Publisher : Clarkson Potter Publishers
  • Release : 1986

  • Pages : 514 pages

Download or read book Fra Angelico written by Jacqueline Guillaud and published by Clarkson Potter Publishers. This book was released on 1986 with total page 514 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fifteenth-century Florentine painter Fra Angelico was a pivotal figure of the Italian Renaissance. The work of this devout Dominican friar was nurtured in Gothic convention, yet came to embody and carry forward the tide of innovation begun by Giotto and others a century before. In frescoes and paintings on wood, Angelico's superb handling of color; his mastery of the new science of perspective, and his delicate modeling of faces and figures have earned him increasing recognition as the greatest successor to Massaccio and an important influence on Piero della Francesca. Prefigurations of the High Renaissance work of Raphael and da Vinci may also be glimpsed in Angelico's mature work. Yet for this deeply religious artist/friar, innovation always served his higher purpose: to inspire the viewer to contemplation, devotion, and awareness of the sacred. Fra Angelico: The Light of the Soul is the first major book devoted to the art of this inspired Renaissance master. Focusing on his work in the museum and cells of the convent of San Marco, Florence, which houses Angelico's finest and most representative work, this beautiful volume contains 190 illustrations reproduced in four colors plus gold. The great frescoes, represented for the first time since their restoration in 1983, are reproduced on onionskin paper to stunning effect, beautifully conveying their luminosity and freshness. Dramatic close-ups, moving details, and startling juxtapositions bring to life the full range of the artist's work--from his famous frescoes, the Crucifixion and Annunciation, to the monumental San Marco and Bosco ai Frati altarpieces, to his small and delicate Scenes from the Life of Christ. -- ‡c From book jacket.
