Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life and Works of Alexander Anderson, M.D: The First American Wood Engraver A Distinguished author has said that illustration stands second only to printing as a means of civilization. We should therefore regard the men who place the beauties of art within the reach of the multitude as most important factors in the improvement of the world. In this work the Father of American Wood-Engraving took a prominent part, accomplishing for his native country what Bewick had already done for England. This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Catalogue of an Exhibition of Early American Engraving Upon Copper, 1727-1850 Until the late Mr. William S. Baker, in 1875, published his "American Engravers and Their Works," the existence of engravers upon copper in the American Colonies and States seems to have been persistently ignored by writers upon this branch of art. Volumes have been printed upon the engravers of Europe and of England, and the life and work of some of the most obscure among foreign engravers have been duly recorded; but the authors of these books fail to note that engravings upon metal was practiced in the American Colonies fully two hundred and fifty years ago; and that the work of some of the later American engravers in line is only surpassed by a few among the foreign master engravers. But, we must also admit that it is only within a comparatively recent period that Americans themselves have commenced to collect and to take an intelligent interest in the early engraved work of their own countrymen. So far as the earlier American prints are concerned there is sufficient ground for the seeming neglect to foreign writers upon engraving. Book excerpt: A History of Wood-Engraving By George Edward Woodberry Woodberry was born in Beverly, Massachusetts, on May 12, 1855. The Woodberrys or Woodburys-various spellings of the name exist-immigrated early and, since settlement took root on the North Shore, have been native to Beverly and neighboring seaport towns. Receiving his preparation at the Phillips Exeter Academy, he entered Harvard College in 1872. Owing, however, to ill health, he was unable to continue with his class. He re-entered in 1875 and was graduated in 1877. Another distinguished member was the then Governor of Massachusetts. Woodberry took highest final honors in philosophy, and was awarded an Oration at Commencement. This essay, on the "Relation of Pallas Athene to Athens," owes its preservation in a permanent form to the fact that he was forbidden to deliver it, because of the disapproval of its substance by the Committee of the Faculty in charge. His college friends asked his consent to print for him a small edition, copies of which are now rare. This and his early college poems, of which there is a selection in ''Verses from the Harvard Advocate'' (1876), were his first-fruits. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Wood-Engraving N this book I have attempted to gather and arrange such facts as should be known to men of cultivation interested in the art of engraving in wood. I have, therefore, disregard ed such matter as seems to belong rather to descriptive bib liography, and have treated wood-engraving, in its principal works, as a re ection of the life of men and an illustration of successive phases of civilization. Where there is much disputed ground, particularly in the early history of the art, the Writers on whom I have relied are referred to, and those who adopt a different view are named; but where the facts seemed plain, and are easily verifiable, reference did not ap pear necessary. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Treatise on Wood Engravings: Historical and Practical Tuouon several English authors have, in modern times, written on the origin and early history of wood engraving, yet no one has hitherto given, in a distinct work, a connected account of its progress from the earliest period to the present time; and no one, however confidently he may have expressed his opinion on the subject, appears to have thought it necessary to make him self acquainted with the practice of the art. The antiquity and early history of wood engraving appear to have been considered as themes which allowed of great scope for speculation, and required no practical knowledge of the art. It is from this cause that we find so many erroneous statements in almost every modern dissertation on wood engraving. Had the writers ever thought of appealing to a person practically acquainted with the art, whose early productions they professed to give some account of, their conjectures might, in many instances, have been spared; and had they, in matters requiring research, taken the pains to ex amine and judge for themselves, instead of adopting the opinions of others, they would have discovered that a considerable por tion of what they thus took on trust, was not in accordance with facts. As the antiquity and early history of wood engraving form a considerable portion of two expensive works which profess to give some account of the art, it has been thought that such a work as the present, combining the history with the practice of the art, and with numerous cuts illustrative of its progress, decline, and revival, might not be unfavourably received. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Etching in America: With List of American Etchers and Notable Collections of Prints There are histories of American painting and engraving, but Etching in America is the first book devoted to this branch of. Our art. As a history, it records the subserviency of etching in the hands of our early engraver etchers, and the various influences leading to the late emancipation of etching as an art. There is included, my introduction to Recent American Etchings, published last year by the publishers of this volume. But, aside from mere historical narration, it has seemed essen tial that something should be said against a style of etching which, while retrogressive in methods and commercial in motive, yet meets with a certain degree of popular favor. On the other hand, I have tried to do full jus tice to our artist etchers, and by the citation of examples I have hoped to direct a larger share of public attention to the consideration. Book American Engravers Upon Copper and Steel Classic Reprint

Download or read book American Engravers Upon Copper and Steel Classic Reprint written by Mantle Fielding and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-05 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Engravers Upon Copper and Steel General interest in the history, development, and study of American engraving seems to increase as we recede from the period when this art was practised, and approach the present age of reproduction by mechanical and photographic processes. Even the growing scarcity of the prints and their greatly increased cost do not seem to have deterred the collectors, but have rather added to their interest. In early American portraits, the hardness and crudity of our pioneer engravers are most apparent, and there is an absence of the grace and elegance about their work which characterized the Eighteenth Century engravers of Europe. To the collector, however, these possess a distinct historical value which is often lacking in the more finished and artistic productions, their very crudity of design and execution seeming to create a certain fascination which even their grotesqueness fails to dispel. Until the publication of the work on "American Engravers" by the late David McN. Stauffer, published by the Grolier Club of New York, in 1907, nothing in the nature of a comprehensive study of the work of American engravers, or a list of their prints, existed; the earlier book on the subject by William S. Baker, being only a collection of notes for future reference, and not a complete review of the subject. Mr. Stauffer's book was, therefore, virtually, a pioneer work in which he had endeavored to cover the field as completely as possible, and no praise is too great for the enthusiastic and painstaking manner in which he entered upon his task.
