Book excerpt: This sophisticated A to Z picture book for adults is an illustrated journey through midcentury modern design, perfect for any reader with a keen eye for style. With eighty tales of design, laid out in a fun and easy-to-read A to Z format, design lovers will be reading this book to each other before bed. With an irreverent structure, this becomes a picture book for the refined adult. Each letter delves into one facet of this enduring era of design: midcentury modern homes, interior design, graphic design, and illustration, as well as the iconic personalities. We might all recognize the names--Charles and Ray Eames, Farnsworth House, the Egg Chair, Henningsen, Elrod House, the case study houses--but what are their stories? This book delves right into the facts and does so light-heartedly. We learn of the grand inspirations, or sometimes (it turns out) the very simplest of ideas, which fueled these Goliaths of midcentury modern design. The only downside: with your newfound design-savvy, you won't be able to look at your IKEA chairs the same way again. If you didn't know that E stands for Eames, Egg Chair, and Elrod House (or don't know what any of those words actually mean) then this book belongs on your coffee table. And if you can't afford an Eames coffee table, then rejoice in knowing that From A to Eames makes an inexpensive and equally satisfying alternative.

Book The Films of Charles and Ray Eames

Download or read book The Films of Charles and Ray Eames written by Eric Schuldenfrei and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-12-05 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Films of Charles and Ray Eames traces the history of the Eameses’ work, examining their evolution away from the design of mass-produced goods and toward projects created as educational experiences. Closely examining how the Eameses described their work reveals how the films and exhibitions they generated were completely at odds with the earlier objectives exemplified in their furniture designs. Shifting away from promoting the consumer-culture, they turned their attention to the presentation of complex sets of scientific, artistic, and philosophical ideas. During a critical period from the late 1950s to the early 1960s there was a moment of introspective self-reflection in the West stemming from the events of the Cold War. This moment of uncertainty was crucial, for it provided the incentive to question the values and concerns of society as a whole. In turn, designers began to question their own sense of purpose, temporarily expanding the purview of design to a broader field of inquiry. In the case of the Eameses, they identified an overriding problem related to consumerism and excess in America and sought to resolve the issue by creating a network of communication between universities, governments, institutions, and corporations. The solution of promoting greater education experiences as an alternative to consumerism in America required that different sectors of society functioned in unison to address political, social, economic, and educational concerns. The Films of Charles and Ray Eames reconsiders how design intersects with humanity, culture, and the sciences.

Book The Eames Lounge Chair

Book excerpt: "This book is the first in-depth study of one of the most revered pieces of American furniture, and its equally revered creators. The Eames Lounge Chair explores the design in detail, shedding new light on its development and construction, and on the role played by Ray Eames in its genesis. In situating the Lounge Chair in its cultural, social, and historical contexts, the book reveals its provocative positioning in relation to Modernism and the trajectory of twentieth century design, through its combination of traditional and modern materials, mechanical production, and hand-finishing. The personal and professional recollections of those who knew Charles and Ray Eames confirm the Lounge Chair's enduring appeal and powerful presence, from its arrival - to critical acclaim - in the mid-1950s, when it promised a more comfortable life to postwar Americans, to its latterday appearance in fiction and film as an icon of "Mid-Century Modern" design - and a key indicator of design awareness." "With more than two hundred illustrations, including a superb photographic essay and previously unpublished drawings, film stills, and personal correspondence, this book is the definitive survey of the Lounge Chair and a tribute to its remarkable creators, who, above all, "took their pleasures seriously." The Eames Lounge Chair is essential reading for anyone interested in Modernist design."--BOOK JACKET.
